Chapter : Exploring the Eighth Underground Floor of the Dungeon (Part 3)
When the rock slid aside, a staircase leading deeper underground was revealed.
The spirits went on ahead for safety.
Behind them marched my knight-guards, the Buunin squad.
I walked hand in hand with Misuzu-san.
Bach and the others followed at the rear.
Descending the stairs, we emerged into a vast chamber.
It was a huge cavern, with a ceiling stretching high above.
Three tunnel-like passages branched off from it.
The tunnels themselves looked only about two meters high, so it would be impossible to summon Kuromitsu there—but in this wide chamber, summoning her should be fine.
“Misuzu-san, let’s summon Kuromitsu here to keep watch while we explore,” I suggested.
“Mm, got it!” she nodded.
At her call, Kuromitsu appeared.
“Kuromitsu-chan, we’re going to explore the cave. Stay here and keep guard, okay?” Misuzu-san told her.
The spirit nodded.
“All right, let’s go!”
We chose to start with the tunnel on the left.
As before, the spirits led the way.
Several traps lay along the path.
I copied the branch manager’s method, marking the trap spots with spray paint.
Eventually, we arrived at another large space.
Ahead of us stood a slightly raised circular platform.
It looked a lot like a boss room.
“Misuzu-san, doesn’t this look like a boss chamber?”
“Yeah. I think if we step on it, a boss will be summoned.”
Still holding hands, we climbed onto the raised platform.
Particles of light gathered around us.
When they faded, bees appeared.
They were each about the size of a puppy.
Their sharp mandible-like jaws resembled pruning shears, and from their rear jutted a thick, deadly stinger.
Seven of them hovered in the air.
The one at the back was likely the boss.
Flying opponents were always troublesome… or so I thought, but before I could even issue an order to the spirits, the knights burst forth at lightning speed.
Their swords flashed, and in the blink of an eye the bee monsters were cut down.
Then they turned back toward me, dropped to one knee, and bowed their heads.
“Takaya-sama, please grant the knights your words. Protecting their lord is their greatest wish,” Bach said.
I called out to them, “Thank you!”
The bee monsters dissolved into motes of light. Left behind were magic stones—and… honey?
I stepped closer and peered at it.
Yes, it was definitely honey.
It was even bottled, with a little sticker of a bee on the glass.
Defeating bee monsters had dropped honey.
What kind of logic was that? The dungeon was full of mysteries.
Misuzu-san picked it up and asked, “Can I give this to Tchaikovsky?”
“Yeah, let’s do that!” I replied.
Tchaikovsky was our cook. He’d surely make good use of it.
Soon after, light gathered again at the center of the circular stage.
When it cleared, a treasure chest appeared.
“Takaya-san! A treasure chest!” Misuzu-san said excitedly.
Her joy made me smile.
Bach approached the chest, examined it for a moment, and said, “Misuzu-sama, it appears to have no traps.”
So Bach also had a skill for detecting traps.
Together with Misuzu-san, I walked up to the chest.
She opened it, and inside lay a scroll.
Taking it out, she began her appraisal.
“It’s a Scroll of Danger Sense!”
“Danger Sense, huh… Honestly, I don’t think we need it. With the spirits, Snow, Shiratama, Bach, and the knights, we’re already well-covered…”
“Then what about Mizuho-chan?”
“Mizuho? She’s an archer. When she looses an arrow, she has to pause her movement. That really could be her most vulnerable moment.”
“Then let’s have Mizuho-chan use this scroll!”
“Yeah, agreed!”
Misuzu-san tucked the scroll away into her waist-pouch-style storage box, the one Bach had given her.
“All right, let’s head back,” I said.
“Then allow me to open a transfer gate,” Bach replied.
With a gesture, a gate appeared in empty air.
Ah, that’s right—Bach and the others could link places they’d already been with transfer gates.
Such convenience. It cut out wasted time and made exploration so much more efficient.
We passed through the gate and, in an instant, were back in the wide chamber where Kuromitsu was waiting.
