Chapter : Back to the Dungeon’s 7th Floor with the Branch Manager and His Team
After a sound sleep in the Sky Castle, we ate the breakfast we had taken to-go and headed for the transfer stone on the dungeon’s first floor.
We were scheduled to meet the branch manager there.
Since there’s no signal inside the dungeon, I couldn’t rely on my phone’s alarm. Just in case, I had set up a battery-powered alarm clock.
Before long, the branch manager arrived with three staff members. The same group as last time.
One after another, we touched the transfer stone and warped into the transfer chamber between the 5th and 6th floors. From there, we passed through the 6th floor and finally reached the 7th.
“The right side, was it?” the branch manager asked, looking ready to trek across the sandy wasteland by foot.
That… would be exhausting. The ground is soft and unstable, hardly easy to walk on.
When I glanced at Misuzu, she gave a nod and summoned Kuromitsu.
The staff, seeing Kuromitsu for the first time, immediately cried out:
“A Black Dragon?!”
The branch manager quickly barked, “That dragon is Misuzu’s summoned beast! Don’t panic!” His loud voice snapped them back to their senses, though they still eyed Kuromitsu nervously.
Kuromitsu expanded his size, prompting awed exclamations of “Oohh!” from the staff.
Misuzu climbed onto his back and turned around. “Please, sit behind me.”
The staff exchanged uneasy glances, none daring to move.
Then the branch manager, without a word, mounted Kuromitsu himself. Sitting firmly in place, he turned and commanded, “Get on, quickly.”
Reluctantly, the staff followed his lead, climbing up and sitting down, stiff with fear.
With a slow beat of his wings, Kuromitsu began to rise. The staff once again let out awestruck shouts of “Ooohh!”
Meanwhile, I called out, “Anemone, if you please!” and with her wind magic, my body lifted gently into the air.
The spirits flew in the lead, me following behind, and Kuromitsu bringing up the rear as we soared gracefully through the skies.
“Wait, why is he flying?!”
“Could it be flight magic?”
“No way. No human has ever been confirmed to use flight magic!” The staff muttered incredulously among themselves.
The branch manager, however, said with certainty, “Takaya is contracted with a wind spirit. It must be their power.”
Bullseye. As expected of the branch manager!
Just then, the spirits and Kuromitsu halted mid-air, hovering in place. All at once, they looked down.
“What is it?” I followed their gaze.
On the sand below, my small shadow and Kuromitsu’s vast one were cast clearly.
A tremendous rumble shook the ground—then something burst upward, jaws wide. A massive worm had lunged straight at Kuromitsu’s shadow, mistaking it for prey.
Ah, so that’s it.
Yesterday, Lupinus had evolved into a mid-tier spirit. The only one left was Amber. Since Amber alone was still lower-ranked, this was a chance to give her some much-needed experience.
“Amber! Create stone spears high in the sky—and drop them on it!”
At my command, Amber unleashed her spell. Six spears of stone materialized above and came plummeting down.
“Anemone, give her a boost!” I added, and Anemone’s wind magic surged forth.
Combined with gravity, the stone spears accelerated, slamming into the desert below.
BOOM!
Sand exploded in every direction. Lupinus conjured a rain spell, calming the dust storm.
As the haze cleared, a treasure chest came into view—along with glittering drops, just like yesterday.
“Kuromitsu-chan! Land near the chest!” Misuzu called out.
But Kuromitsu didn’t descend. Instead, he kept circling slowly above, refusing to come down.
Strange. Why won’t he listen?
Then I caught Amber shaking her head.
…Something’s still there.
BOOM! Another deafening crash as a second gigantic worm erupted from beneath Kuromitsu’s shadow.
Ah. That explains it. Kuromitsu hadn’t landed because he sensed the danger.
“Amber, again!”
Five stone spears formed above and streaked downward. But the massive worm writhed wildly, and only one spear struck true, piercing its body.
From the wound, foul ichor gushed.
“Ugh! Gross!” Misuzu squealed, then cried, “Kuromitsu, attack!”
Flames roared from Kuromitsu’s jaws, engulfing the area in fire.
The branch manager’s team shouted in awe: “Incredible firepower!”
And then, a mechanical voice echoed in my mind:
《Earth Spirit Amber has evolved into a mid-tier spirit.》
Yes! She did it! Amber had finally evolved.
Now all the spirits I’d contracted had reached mid-tier.
We did it!
