The Hole-Digging Craze?
Kudō and I were on our way to the dungeon entrance, planning to head down to the fourth basement floor for some goblin hunting, when I noticed something strange.
Several parties were walking past us… all carrying shovels.
Why the heck were they lugging those around?
…Ah. My brilliant mind quickly arrived at the answer.
Clearly, they must have been blessed with the Shovel User job.
While I was still convinced of my own theory, Kudō walked up to one of the attendants stationed at the dungeon entrance.
“Excuse me, but why are so many people carrying shovels today?” he asked.
The attendant replied, “A party called Sunrise recently discovered a treasure chest at the base of a big tree on the fourth basement floor. Inside was a storage bag. Then another party, Akebono, dug at the base of a different large tree and found another chest—this one held a storage bag and a mid-grade potion. Ever since, people have been coming down here with shovels, hoping to find their own.”
Oh-ho… now that was useful intel.
I had to admit, every now and then Kudō did something right. I bumped his evaluation up by… oh, let’s say, half a point.
And then it hit me—why not have Kudō do the digging?
To be honest, Kudō was practically useless when it came to goblin hunting.
Yes. This was perfect. Kudō could dig for treasure while I took care of the goblins.
“Kudō,” I said, “while I’m hunting goblins, how about you search for treasure chests?”
“Treasure hunting, huh? Sounds fun,” he replied.
Just as I thought—Kudō danced to my tune without even realizing it.
Truly, what a convenient guy.
I dragged him over to the shop that sold weapons, armor, and other adventuring supplies.
And wouldn’t you know it—the old man was there again.
Seriously, was our encounter rate with him one hundred percent? Take a day off, old man.
I ignored him and made a beeline for the shovel section…
…only to find the racks completely empty.
The old man, of course, had to comment. “Looking for a shovel? You’re out of luck. Ever since word got out about those treasure chests under the big trees, adventurers have bought up every last one. No stock left.”
Stock up properly, you geezer! Useless, as always.
With no other choice, we left the shop and made for the dungeon entrance.
We arrived at the fourth basement floor and decided to try a different route this time—a narrow animal trail–like path winding through the undergrowth.
Kudō’s armor scraped against branches and trunks as we went, but with his ironclad defense, I didn’t bother worrying.
This time I kept my eyes on the ground as well—last time, I’d fallen victim to one of the goblins’ traps.
After a while, we reached a small clearing.
A large tree stood in the center, and another adventurer party was already there.
One woman stood watch while a man dug away at the base of the tree with a shovel.
Noticing that we were adventurers as well, the woman called out to us.
“Here for treasure hunting too?”
“No,” I replied curtly. “We’re here for goblin hunting.”
No way was I going to admit we couldn’t join the hunt because the shovels were sold out. My pride wouldn’t allow it.
Just as we were about to leave, the man digging suddenly exclaimed, “Got one! Found a treasure chest!”
What? A treasure chest…? Not that I was envious or anything—just a tiny bit.
I lingered to watch.
The woman checked the chest for traps.
“Looks like it’s clear,” she said.
The man opened it. Inside was a single pouch and two potions.
“Hey, Azusa, give these a once-over,” the man said, handing them to her.
Apparently, the woman had an appraisal skill.
After a moment, she announced, “This pouch is a storage bag—no time-stop function, but it can hold up to twenty kilos. The two potions are both low-grade.”
Watching the whole scene, I was—again—just the tiniest bit envious.
“…Let’s go, Kudō. Goblin hunting time,” I said, turning on my heel.
