Chapter: Takasugi vs Goblins — Rematch, Part 1
We walked along a narrow path that was more like an animal trail than a road.
Yet, we couldn’t find a single goblin.
Could it be that the goblins are fleeing because of the loud clanking sound of Kudo’s armor as he walks?
Hmm… I start formulating a strategy.
What if we trap them on a narrow, dead-end path?
I could have Kudo stand at the far end to block the exit, while I drive the goblins forward from the entrance. We’d catch them in a pincer movement.
Alright, let’s give it a try.
I explained the plan to Kudo and had him hide behind a tree at the far end of the path. Meanwhile, I would approach from the other side and drive the goblins forward.
I crouched behind a tree and waited quietly for goblins to appear.
Eventually, four goblins came into view.
The moment the last one passed by, I slung my axe over my shoulder, yelled, “Goblins! Die!” and charged straight at them.
Startled, the goblins turned tail and ran down the path—right into our trap.
“Kudo!” I shouted.
Kudo emerged slowly and blocked the path.
Yes! Just as planned!
He raised his massive shield above his head with both hands. Then, just as the goblins drew close, he slammed it down with all his might.
“Shield Knock!”
The lead goblin took the full blow and went down. The goblins behind it tripped over their fallen comrade and tumbled one after another.
Nice! Well done, Kudo! That was perfect!
Then Kudo, now fully fired up, kept swinging his shield down again and again.
“Shield Knock!” he shouted repeatedly as he pounded the helpless goblins.
By the time I arrived, all four goblins had turned into particles of light, and four magic stones lay scattered on the ground.
“I did it, Takasugi! I beat the goblins!” Kudo beamed at me.
...Yeah, good for you. I wasn’t happy at all.
He was only supposed to stop them. I was supposed to finish them off. I ran all that way with a heavy axe for nothing—just wore myself out!
Damn it! Why did Kudo get all the kills?
Still, at least the goblins were successfully defeated.
Maybe we should keep using this strategy for a bit and see how it goes.
“Kudo! Let’s keep using the same plan for now!” I ordered.
“Got it! Leave the goblin hunting to me!” Kudo replied cheerfully.
What the hell are you saying? I’m the one who’s supposed to defeat the goblins.
Idiot.
Just because we got lucky once doesn’t mean you can get all smug about it.
We hid behind the trees again and waited for more goblins to come by.
Nothing.
Just as I was thinking we might need to move, goblins finally appeared—three this time.
As soon as the third one passed, I jumped out, shouting at the top of my lungs and charging after them from behind.
But my axe was heavy, and I quickly fell behind.
From the far end of the path, Kudo emerged again. “Shield Knock!” he yelled, and once again bashed the goblins with his massive shield.
By the time I arrived, the goblins had already been wiped out.
Damn it! Not again! I didn’t land a single hit!
Why is Kudo getting all the kills?!
That’s not how this is supposed to go!
