Chapter :: Crisis
At the sound of that word, the skeleton soldiers surrounding us began to move.
“Fight back!”
A B-rank guild member shouted, snapping the dazed others back to reality.
“Protect Lady Silfeel!”
Four guild members ran to the fallen Silfeel, while the others pointed their weapons at the approaching skeleton soldiers.
“We’re moving too!”
Kinako said.
“Get the investigation team out of here!”
“Then take down the skeleton soldiers on the south side!”
“South side? There’s a big hole over there.”
“It’s fine!”
“…Got it.”
Kinako dodged a curved blade attack from a skeleton soldier in front and jumped, crushing the gem on its forehead with her pink paw pads.
“Ka… kaka…”
Three skeleton soldiers charged Kinako from the side.
“Not on my watch! ‘Magic Barrier Strength Four’!”
I materialized a white paper wall. The wall blocked the skeleton soldiers’ path.
“Yakumo, I’m casting magic!”
Almine’s voice came from behind.
Several small magic circles appeared in the air. From them, orange flaming swords appeared, stabbing dozens of skeleton soldiers.
The skeleton soldiers burned and fell one after another.
With that, there were no more skeleton soldiers on the south side.
I jumped over the bodies and moved to the edge of the big hole.
About fifty meters to the other side. If I used paper that took longer to materialize, I might make it.
I carefully checked the terrain and focused my will.
Tens of thousands of sheets of paper materialized and moved according to my will.
The papers joined to form a huge bridge.
With this bridge, we could quickly put distance and escape.
“Everyone, this way!”
I beckoned to the investigation team.
“Escape using this bridge! Hurry!”
“Th-This bridge?”
Cyrus, the investigation team leader, stared at the paper bridge with his mouth half open.
“Forget that, just run!”
“Y-Yes! Everyone, run!”
Cyrus ran across the bridge with the others.
Alright! Now only the Moonlight Guild members remained… Ah…
I caught sight of Corinne running away from the Metallic Doll. Silfeel was carried on her back.
This was bad! Silfeel still seemed unconscious.
I ran toward the Metallic Doll chasing Corinne.
The Metallic Doll’s weak spot was the core below its neck. Knowing that gave me a chance!
I stood in front of the Metallic Doll to protect Corinne.
Its slender right hand swung diagonally down. I blocked the attack with my magic barrier.
The Metallic Doll paused momentarily.
I poured magic into my magic-eating dagger. The bluish-white blade lengthened and pierced below the Metallic Doll’s neck.
But the blade tip stopped partway.
Damn! It’s tough. Not reaching the core.
“Vu… vuvu…”
The Metallic Doll’s left hand grabbed my arm. I heard the creak of bones.
Damn! Its power is as strong as an orc’s.
I grimaced and poured additional magic into the dagger. The blade’s glow intensified, and the tip protruded from the Metallic Doll’s back.
A sound like glass breaking rang out, and the Metallic Doll froze.
I quickly moved away.
Seconds later, the Metallic Doll exploded.
Alright! I somehow managed to defeat it. I used a lot of magic, but it can’t be helped.
I hurried to Corinne, who was standing there with her mouth open.
“Corinne, cross the bridge and escape!”
“But…”
“Right now, getting Silfeel to a safe place is the priority.”
“…Understood. Please take care of her.”
Corinne bowed to me and ran off.
I looked over the Moonlight Guild members fighting skeleton soldiers.
This won’t do. There are too many skeleton soldiers.
And then…
Two Metallic Dolls approached me.
Two this time.
Cold sweat dripped down my forehead.
I’ve used more than half my basic magic power on the paper bridge and magic-eating dagger. I still have some left, but it’s time to fight carefully.
