The Branch Chief Has a Headache – Part 2
After exiting the dungeon, I told the receptionist I wanted to speak with the branch chief.
"Do you have an appointment?"
I shook my head.
"May I see your Explorer Card, please?" she asked, and I handed it over.
"I'll check with him. Please wait a moment," she said and disappeared into a room in the back.
She returned almost immediately.
"He said he'll see you. Please go in."
Must not be very busy.
I entered the branch chief’s office and sat on the reception sofa.
"What’s up? Something happen?" he asked.
I told him I went to B2 of the dungeon.
"There’s nothing down there though, right?" he replied.
When I told him there was a goddess statue on top of the left wall, and I’d found a treasure chest there, he asked:
"Seriously? How did you even get up there?"
I explained I floated up with wind magic.
He pressed his temples again.
Migraine acting up again?
I continued, telling him how I squeezed through a gap behind a large rock and found the goddess statue carved into its hidden side.
There was a treasure chest at its feet, and inside it—a white egg.
I pulled the egg out from my backpack and showed it to him.
"This is a magical beast egg," he said.
"Magical beast?"
"Yeah. Only people with the Tamer Job can hatch it. The egg absorbs a tamer’s mana to grow, and once it's ready, the tamer gives it a name and forms a contract."
"If you want to sell it, I’ll buy it. These eggs hatch into random beasts, so no one knows what you’ll get. That’s why only tamers buy them. Also, just a reminder—you’re forbidden from selling magical beast eggs outside the Explorer’s Association."
I told him,
"If I ever need the money, I’ll sell it."
"Understood. Thanks for the report."
He nodded.
But I wasn’t done.
I went on to tell him about the right side wall this time.
There was a tunnel above, where ghost-like monsters began appearing as I went in.
I explained how there were traps in the center, left side, and on the right wall, and how at the end, I found a pair of large double doors.
Inside, a boss ghost emerged from a massive magic circle.
Freesia touched it and it vanished in a flash of light.
After that, I found a large red magic stone and a treasure chest.
I took out the red magic stone from my backpack and showed it to him.
The branch chief’s eyes widened. He clutched his temples again.
Then I told him how the chest turned out to be a mimic, with sharp fangs and a snarling mouth. Anemone took it out with a wind attack.
After the mimic vanished, another chest appeared, and inside—another egg.
I pulled out the second egg and the magic stone dropped by the mimic and placed them on the table.
The branch chief sat in silence, tapping the table repeatedly with his middle finger.
He seemed deep in thought.
After a long pause, he finally spoke.
"You’re… utterly absurd. Let me get this straight. First, the ‘ghosts’ you fought are called Wraiths. Physical attacks don’t work on them. They can only be dealt with using holy or light magic. Plus, even touching a Wraith causes status effects—they’re a pain to deal with."
"Then there’s the boss ghost—probably a Lich. One of the strongest magic-type monsters there is. Only a handful have ever been successfully defeated across the entire world."
"Finally, the monster in the treasure chest. That was a Mimic. If you carelessly get close, it’ll bite your arm clean off with those fangs."
"Do you get how ridiculous all this sounds now?"
"I mean… I didn’t know any of that," I replied.
"Freesia just touched its shoulder and poof—it turned into light particles."
The branch chief let out a long sigh.
"Fine. I’ll report all of this. But if anything else happens—you report it. Got it? You must."
"Understood."
"Also… you’re going to sell me those magic stones, right? Without proof, no one’s going to believe me!"
"I don’t care if they don’t believe me."
"Well I care! Help me out here—sell me the stones!"
He pleaded, so I decided to go ahead and sell them.
After that, I left the room.
