Chapter 38: Making Them Pay (2)
——Side: Kana
"Morning, Seina."
"G-Good morning, Kana-chan... Um, I’m sorry!"
It was morning at the school’s entrance when I reunited with my best friend after three days apart.
As soon as I called out to her, Seina looked at me apologetically and bowed deeply.
"What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly apologizing?"
"B-Because... I was the one who called you out, and then that happened..."
"You don’t need to worry about that. It was an accident, and it didn’t even leave a scar."
Three days ago, I’d been called to that classroom by Seina—and apparently, I got caught up in some kind of accident.
Apparently, because I can’t remember a thing about it.
When I came to, I was already lying in a hospital bed. The doctor told me, “You only lightly injured your back. Nothing serious, but let’s keep you for three days just in case.”
After that, Dad and my brother came to visit, and the next evening, my classmates dropped by to see me. But to be honest, it still doesn’t feel real.
"Anyway, I’m just glad you were okay too, Seina."
"Y-Yeah... I wasn’t hurt at all, so..."
"Don’t look so guilty. C’mon, let’s get going!"
"...Okay."
I took Seina’s hand and led her up to the second floor, where the second-year classrooms were.
"Oh yeah, I heard that classroom’s off-limits for a while. Where should we eat lunch?"
"About that... The room next to the AV room is usually empty. Want to eat there?"
"Sounds good! Let’s do that."
Eating with a big group of friends is fun, but I really enjoy the quiet time I get with Seina.
"A-And... do you want to swap side dishes? My mom packed me a bento today..."
Seina usually only brought 500-yen convenience store bread for lunch. She’d never once brought a bento from home.
From past conversations, I could tell her relationship with her parents wasn’t great. Maybe things had gotten better.
"Sure! Then after fourth period—"
"Ah..."
In the middle of our conversation, Seina let out a small gasp.
Looking where she was staring, I saw them—the three girls who had torn up her manga.
When they noticed Seina, they started whispering to each other.
Are they trying something again?
Thinking that, I stepped in front of Seina, shielding her, and faced the three girls.
...But then—
"Eek! Amagi!"
"W-We weren’t gonna do anything, I swear!"
"We’re sorry! Really, we’re sorry! Just please don’t hurt us!"
Looking terrified, the three of them ran off.
"...What was that all about?"
"Beats me. But hey, maybe now they’ll leave you alone. Things should be a little easier from now on."
"Y-Yeah. I’ll think of it that way."
We chatted like that and headed off to our respective classrooms.
The ordinary days with Seina were back.
And I held onto that feeling tightly as I walked.

——Side: Iori Osamu
"Yo. What’s with the doomsday look?"
As I entered the classroom, I found the guy in front of me—Asama Rentarou—slouched in his chair, staring blankly at his phone.
"Aoi-chan dumped me..."
"Ah. That sucks."
"She’d been texting me less since I was hospitalized... I kinda knew. But hearing it directly is still rough, y’know?"
Glancing around the classroom, I noticed that quite a few guys were staring dejectedly at their messaging apps.
They all had two things in common:
First, they’d gotten girlfriends through a certain group chat right before the first midterm.
Second, those same girlfriends had been on that bus with them when it crashed, leaving them hospitalized and temporarily on leave.
Thankfully, everyone had made a full recovery—no lasting injuries.
But still...
"Well, look. At least you’re alive, right?"
"Yeah..."
As I offered Rentarou some empty comfort, a message popped up on my phone.
It was from Kuon: “I want a proper explanation after school. Meet me in the clubroom.”
When I looked over at her, she shot me a brief glare, then turned back to chatting with her friends.
Right... I never really explained what happened, huh.
I replied with a quick “Got it”, then sent a message to Alicia too: “Can you come with me?”
Alicia, who had been chatting with other girls, checked her phone, sighed with a wry smile, and nodded at me.
"Alright everyone, take your seats. We’re starting homeroom."
Just then, Koshimizu-sensei walked in.
I stuffed my phone into my pocket and began mentally preparing for Kuon’s inevitable inquisition.
Translator’s Notes:
-
"あれは不慮な事故" – "It was just an accident"
-
Kana refers to the supernatural incident as an "accident", showing how little she remembers—and how much has been conveniently erased or buried.
-
-
Seina's bento
-
Her mom suddenly packing her lunch may indicate a change in their relationship. Likely a ripple effect from the supernatural events.
-
-
The bullies’ reaction
-
The terrified reaction to Kana (who doesn't remember anything) implies the girls do remember something—or felt something that left a deep impression.
-
-
Group chat girlfriends
-
The boys’ relationships ending en masse suggests they may have been artificially induced by the fox spirit—now broken with her defeat.
-
-
Kuon’s message
-
Her short and firm demand shows frustration. Osamu bulldozed decisions without letting her in—expect tension.
-
-
Alicia's reaction
-
Familiar with Osamu’s messes, she’s clearly resigned but willing to support him.
