Chapter 39: Making Them Pay (3)
“—And that’s pretty much the gist of what happened.”
After school, in the corner of the Literary Club room—tucked away in the second school building that also housed various other clubs—I knelt in seiza and recounted the events to Kuon.
“I understand the general situation. As for the Nine-Tails’ Tail, we’ll conduct a thorough investigation before sealing it away. You needn’t worry.”
Kuon spoke with her usual composure, sipping her green tea with a slightly frosty tone.
“Uh, Kuon… are you, by any chance, angry?”
“I’m not angry. I’m simply concerned that you charged into enemy territory without consulting anyone and only gave an after-the-fact report.”
Ah. She’s definitely mad.
“W-Well… I’m really sorry about that.”
“…Getting a sudden midnight call saying, ‘I defeated Nagamoto, but he wasn’t the mastermind,’ was quite the shock, you know.”
“Yes… I sincerely regret my actions…”
I bowed my head deeply. I had barged into a yakuza hideout alone in the dead of night and dragged Kuon into the aftermath with little explanation. Even someone as gentle as Kuon had every right to be upset.
So for now, I’d take the scolding quietly.
“At the very least, notify someone before doing something dangerous. I know you’re stronger than anyone, but that’s beside the point.”
“Understood! I’ll make sure to communicate better next time!”
“…Very well. I’ll take you at your word.”
Seeing her usual gentle smile return, I let out a quiet sigh of relief.
“Now, while I grasp the overall situation, how did you handle the aftermath?”
“Ah, that’s—”
“Simple. He and my organization worked overnight to alter the memories and records of everyone involved.”
The clubroom door opened, and Alicia walked in.
“…You invited Alicia-san too?”
“Explaining this incident without me would’ve been impossible. You know that, Kyōri.”
“Tch…”
Sensing the tension in the air, I quickly stepped in to redirect the conversation.
“A-Anyway, as Alicia said, her organization helped rewrite memories and records to construct an entirely different narrative.”
Rentarou and the others had been rendered unconscious by those cursed glass bottles. Alicia had sensed something was off and had them transferred to a front hospital affiliated with her organization. Thanks to that, healing them with [Recovery Magic] and altering surrounding memories had gone off without a hitch.
Her team had even falsified records, making it seem like Rentarou and the others had been in a minor bus accident that left them briefly comatose.
As for their relationships? They remembered meeting their girlfriends through a now-defunct dating chat service—no trace of the Yamafuji-kai’s involvement remained.
The wave of post-recovery breakups was unexpected, but… well, I guess it just wasn’t meant to last.
The same memory manipulation was done for the middle schoolers, convincing them they’d been in a simple accident.
And for the Yamafuji-kai, those three bullies, the negligent teachers, and the absent parents… we made a few additional “adjustments.”
“So, in the end, only the three of us here know the full truth.”
“That’s fine, but…”
Kuon shot a sidelong glance toward Alicia.
“Oh? Does the esteemed Kuon heir disapprove of me knowing your secrets?”
“That’s not what I meant… Though, are you sure you’re fine with revealing your identity to us?”
“Not ideal, but within acceptable limits. Especially when dealing with someone as abnormally overpowered as him.”
Alicia’s eyes flicked toward me as she spoke.
Yeah, at this point, she’d figured out I could uncover secrets.
Oh, right.
“Just to confirm—your organization has no intention of harming me or my family, right?”
“As long as you don’t expose me or commit crimes, no.”
“…Got it. I’ll take your word for it.”
As we spoke, the school bell rang—signaling the end of the day.
“Guess we’ll call it here for today.”
“Mhm. See you tomorrow, Osamu-kun, Kyōri-chan.”
Alicia gave a light wave and strolled out.
Alright, time to head home.
Just as I stood—
“…One last question. Was the Nine-Tails’ Tail truly trying to revive the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons?”
“Huh? Yeah, but…”
“…Understood. Sorry for keeping you. I’ll lock up, so you can go ahead.”
“R-Right.”
Uneasy about Kuon’s troubled expression, I left quickly. I still had chores waiting at home.
◇◇◇
——Kuon Main Household
“Dammit! Why?! Why did it fail?!”
Kuon Genji roared in frustration.
His grand plan—“Partially lift the Nine-Tails’ seal, release one of its tails to revive the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, then subdue it and boost my standing”—had hit a major snag.
The crucial tail had been captured.
He had taken a bold risk, tampering with the seal and releasing a fragment of the Nine-Tails’ power into that town. But instead of a staged triumph, it had ended up in the hands of that girl—Kyōri.
Of course he was livid.
“This is all her fault… and that man’s!”
If it hadn’t been for that guy constantly clinging to Kyōri, the plan would have succeeded. He would have been celebrated as the one who quelled the Night Parade, cementing his future as clan heir.
“Calm yourself, Genji-sama.”
“…You. Ibara.”
A girl stepped forward and gently wrapped her arms around him from behind.
“This isn’t the end. You still have a chance.”
“Ah… yes, you’re right…”
As Ibara held him, the faint scent of incense on her hair slowly calmed his rage.
“Rest assured, Genji-sama. I will deliver the Kuon clan to you. So, for now… rest.”
“…Yes. I’ll do that.”
Genji’s eyes fluttered shut as he rested his head on her lap.
Ibara gently stroked his hair, a twisted smile curving her lips.
Like a serpent coiling around its prey—she smiled with the eerie serenity of a snake preparing to swallow a frog whole.
Translator's Notes:
-
Kuon’s Coldness: Her restrained anger is rare and highlights how reckless Osamu’s actions truly were.
-
Alicia’s Involvement: Her casual reveal of memory-tampering shows her organization's eerie efficiency—and ruthlessness.
-
Genji’s Plan: A classic yokai tale structure: use chaos to gain power. His downfall? Arrogance and underestimating others.
-
Ibara’s Role: Her name ("Thorn") and snake imagery foreshadow her true nature—manipulative, dangerous, and far more calculating than Genji.
-
Lingering Tension: Kuon’s final question suggests the Night Parade isn’t over. Something deeper stirs behind the scenes…
