Chapter : With the Branch Manager and the Sky Castle
I walked across the Cloudlands and arrived at the castle’s main gate.
After greeting the spirits guarding the gate, I stepped inside.
Passing through the corridors and into the audience chamber, I noticed piles of magic stones stacked against the walls.
And before the throne—there was a treasure chest.
I decided to speak with the higher spirit.
According to it, the moment the announcement of the dungeon’s hidden boss defeat rang out, clusters of light particles began to gather throughout the castle, spawning a massive number of monsters.
If I recall, the Branch Manager had called them harpies?
Once again, a battle between spirits and monsters broke out, and the spirits wiped them out completely.
I was the one who defeated the dungeon’s hidden boss.
Feeling responsible, I apologized, but the higher spirit only said, “It was a good source of experience for the spirits,” and wasn’t angry at all.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
Then I explained that after defeating the hidden boss and stepping into the magic circle in its chamber, we were transferred to the back of this castle.
I also mentioned that the Branch Manager and the others had been transported outside the castle with me through the transfer circle.
The higher spirit said it was already aware—they could sense it through the movement of the winds.
So I brought up the Branch Manager’s request: he wanted permission to investigate this castle.
Normal humans cannot see spirits.
And in the past, even while spirits were present, humans often acted selfishly, ignoring them.
That was why spirits didn’t trust humans much.
I promised that the Branch Manager would make a proper announcement to the humans, and asked for permission to bring them inside.
The higher spirit agreed to grant entry, but warned that if anyone harmed the fairies, there would be no mercy.
I assured them that I’d make the Branch Manager and the others strictly follow that rule, and gave my word.
When I returned to the entrance, Misuzu-san and the Branch Manager were waiting.
“Branch Manager, I’ve received permission from the spirits! But they said if anyone harms the fairies, they’ll attack without hesitation. So please, don’t do anything reckless!” I told him.
“Understood! We’ll follow Takaya’s instructions. You hear that? Don’t act on your own—if Takaya gets in trouble because of you, there’ll be hell to pay,” the Branch Manager warned the staff.
“Yes, we understand!” they replied.
Then the Branch Manager said, “We’ve finished recording the exterior. What we need now is footage of the interior. If we conduct a proper investigation and leave solid evidence, headquarters won’t complain. We’ll have a full report, and we’ll also issue notices to the explorers, so don’t worry.”
Listening to this, Misuzu-san smiled. “Let’s go inside!”
And so, together, we entered the castle.
The staff resumed filming.
“Once we’re done recording, let’s sit down and take a proper break,” Misuzu-san suggested.
“Yeah, let’s do that,” I replied.
We passed through the corridors and reentered the audience chamber.
I told the Branch Manager that I would store the pile of magic stones in my room later.
“Got it. I’ll put them in the backpack I’m carrying for now,” he said, placing them inside.
When I glanced at Misuzu-san, her eyes were fixed on the treasure chest.
“Anemone! Can you check if there’s a trap on that chest?” I asked.
Anemone nodded eagerly and flew over to it.
After inspecting it, she nodded again.
“Misuzu-san, no traps. It’s safe to open,” I told her, and she broke into a smile.
She stepped up to the chest.
Just as she reached out with her right hand to open it—
“Wait a moment!” one of the staff called, hurrying over with a camera.
They wanted to capture the chest being opened on film.
Once ready, Misuzu-san opened the chest with her right hand.
She reached inside slowly, then carefully drew out the contents.
It was a black case.
When she opened it, inside was a set of kitchen knives.
Why a set? Because there were several blades of different shapes inside.
Misuzu-san gazed at the knives, no doubt appraising them.
She then turned toward me.
“Takaya-san, it’s a set of knives rated around C-rank! If you channel magic into them, you can cut like a first-class chef!”
“Let’s give them to your mother as a present!” she added with a smile.
…Is my mother really planning to open that countryside eatery?
