Goblin Extermination Request from Sunrise
As usual, I started my day with my regular routine.
First up: hunting slimes in the dungeon behind my house.
After that, I watered the veggies in my backyard garden.
Then came the room cleaning.
When I opened the window, the household spirit used wind magic to blow all the dust outside in one big gust.
Room cleaning: complete in seconds.
Thanks to the spirit, everything is ridiculously easy.
Much appreciated, as always!
Afterward, I headed over to the Nakamori residence, where Kenta-san gave me a ride. We arrived at the dungeon shortly after.
Kenta-san and the others made their way to the locker room to gear up.
Meanwhile, Misuzu-san and I planned to head down to the fifth basement floor today.
Last time, Snow had taken care of everything so efficiently that we passed through without any battles at all, but we hadn’t actually explored that floor yet.
So Misuzu-san and I decided to investigate it this time.
As we were walking toward the dungeon entrance, a staff member came over and said, “The branch manager would like to speak with you.”
So Misuzu-san and I made our way to the branch manager’s office.
When we entered, the branch manager greeted us with a chuckle.
“I hear you found a treasure chest buried under some tree roots on the fourth floor. Other parties have found some as well, and now it’s turned into a full-on digging craze down there.”
Then, he got to the real reason we were summoned.
“We’re planning a large-scale goblin extermination operation. I’d like Sunrise to take part.”
“A goblin extermination?” I asked.
The branch manager went on to explain the situation:
-
There are ten goblin dens on the fourth floor.
-
Goblins emerge from their dens at sunrise and return at sunset.
-
For every goblin defeated, a new one is born in the den overnight. The number of goblins emerging each morning remains constant.
-
Even if a den is destroyed, a new one appears elsewhere—so the number of dens also stays the same.
Because of this, there's no point in destroying the dens—it just means having to redraw the dungeon map each time.
-
Surviving goblins grow smarter over time. They start commanding younger goblins in coordinated attacks or setting traps, which has made things tough for rookie explorers.
“That’s why we do these extermination operations a few times a year,” he said. “Just recently, a new explorer took multiple club hits to the rear from goblins and had to be carried to the infirmary on a stretcher.”
“Ow… that sounds painful,” Misuzu-san winced, instinctively placing a hand over her own backside.
“As I said, even if we wipe out every goblin, the same number will just respawn in the dens overnight. The goal this time is to eliminate the smart goblins. That’s why I want your team to participate.”
I didn’t mind joining, but I wasn’t sure how Misuzu-san felt about it.
The plan was to stay overnight at a hotel arranged by the Adventurers’ Guild, then set out in the middle of the night.
The extermination would begin at sunrise.
Even if Misuzu-san didn’t join, I could still participate on my own.
“I’m in,” I said. “What about you, Misuzu-san?”
“I’ll do it too!” she answered without hesitation.
The branch manager mentioned that he’d be inviting Kenta-san’s team and a few other parties as well.
Once the participating teams were confirmed, he’d finalize the date and let us know.
With that settled, Misuzu-san and I returned to our original plan and headed down to the fifth basement floor of the dungeon.
