Chapter ; Takuya and Misuzu Go to Register a Beast
Saturday finally came. Misuzu and I hopped into Kenta’s car and headed for the Explorer’s Guild branch.
First, we needed to report to the branch manager and get the new beast registered.
After that, the plan was to head to the Sky Castle on the first floor of the dungeon and introduce Kuromitsu to the high-ranking wind spirit.
When we arrived at the branch and parted ways with Kenta, Misuzu and I went straight to see the manager.
We told the receptionist we wanted to speak with him. “Go right ahead,” she said, letting us through.
I knocked on the office door and stepped inside. The manager glanced up from behind his desk as we sat down on the sofa.
“So, what brings you in today?” he asked.
Misuzu didn’t waste a second.
“A new beast hatched! We’re here to register it.”
“The egg from before? It finally hatched, huh? Let me see it.”
Misuzu opened the bag she was carrying. Inside were two beasts: one white, one black.
The white one was Shiratama. The black one—Kuromitsu.
Misuzu gently lifted Kuromitsu in both hands, showing her off proudly.
“This is Kuromitsu-chan, a Black Dragon!”
“…Huh?” The branch manager froze.
It was the first time I’d ever seen that dumbfounded look on his face. I almost burst out laughing.
Nope. Bad idea. If he catches me grinning, I’m dead.
I clenched my teeth, fighting the urge to smirk.
After a long pause, the manager finally moved again.
“…Maybe I misheard. Say that one more time?”
“I said, Kuromitsu-chan is a Black Dragon!” Misuzu repeated cheerfully.
“…Not a mishearing then. I know you’ve got Appraisal, Misuzu, but I want confirmation. Mind if I have the branch’s appraiser check?”
“Of course! That’s fine!”
The manager picked up the phone and called for the appraiser.
A few moments later, the appraiser walked in.
“Could you appraise this black beast for me?” the manager asked.
“Understood.”
The man studied Kuromitsu closely… and his expression gradually shifted to pure shock.
“Th-this… this is a Black Dragon!” he stammered.
“Got it. That’s all I needed. You can go,” the manager said calmly, though his eyes were anything but.
Once the appraiser left, the manager turned to us.
“So… what’s your plan? It’s fine now while it’s small, but when it grows up, you can’t exactly keep it at home.”
“That’s why we’re planning to raise her in the Sky Castle on the first floor of the dungeon,” I replied.
“Smart. As long as the spirits give permission. If a fight broke out between a Black Dragon and the spirits, it’d be catastrophic.”
“I’ve already spoken with the high-ranking wind spirit. It’s fine,” I assured him.
“And she’s really smart—she understands people when we talk to her,” Misuzu added with a smile.
“There are only a handful of tamers in the world who’ve ever managed to control a wyvern, and that caused an uproar at the time.”
“But a Black Dragon? I’ve never even heard of that happening. If this gets out, the press will swarm your house, and the whole country will be talking about it.”
“Neighbors will panic, the police will want 24-hour surveillance… it’ll be a mess.”
The manager let out a long sigh.
“So yeah, keeping it in the dungeon is probably the best option. Only explorers or guild staff can even get in.”
He stared off into the distance as if bracing for disaster.
The manager agreed to handle Kuromitsu’s registration personally.
After leaving his office, Misuzu and I headed for the dungeon gate.
We entered and walked the familiar grassy path on the first floor, then took a right, passed over the hill, and reached the big tree.
Anemone lifted us up to the Sky Castle with wind magic.
We walked across the cloud-covered ground, passed through the castle gates, and stepped into the grand hall.
At the throne sat the high-ranking wind spirit.
I introduced Kuromitsu. “We’d like to keep her here. Is that okay?”
The spirit agreed—as long as Kuromitsu didn’t harm the fairies.
When I relayed that to Misuzu, she crouched down and said to Kuromitsu,
“You hear that? Don’t cause trouble for the spirits or fairies, okay?”
Kuromitsu bobbed her head up and down, like she really understood.
Good. That’s a relief.
After that, we checked out our rooms in the castle. Misuzu’s was huge, with a massive balcony—plenty of space for Kuromitsu when she grows.
Once we’d thanked the spirits, we left the dungeon and headed home.
