Chapter : Takaya and Misuzu Explore Dungeon Floor 6 (Part 1)
Monday was a public holiday, which gave us a three-day weekend: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
So, we decided to make the most of it by exploring the sixth basement floor of the dungeon.
After entering the dungeon, we touched the transfer stone on the first floor, which instantly teleported us to a small chamber midway through the tunnel connecting the fifth and sixth floors. There, another transfer stone was installed.
From that point, we proceeded downward through the tunnel and finally arrived at the sixth floor.
The sixth basement level was a vast forested area, filled with towering trees.
According to the dungeon map, this floor is inhabited by goblins and creatures called Trents.
Trents disguise themselves as trees, lying in wait for unsuspecting explorers to approach before ambushing them.
Defeating a Trent will yield either a magic stone or an object resembling a wooden stick as a drop.
These wooden-stick-like drops are highly valuable, often used as materials for luxury furniture, and they fetch a higher price than magic stones.
Kenta and his party had told us they made quite a fortune on this floor.
The dungeon map also noted that, to prevent explorers from getting lost, arrows were carved into tree trunks. Following these arrows would eventually lead to the seventh floor.
Tampering with these arrows is strictly forbidden by the Explorers’ Association. Anyone caught altering them would be slapped with a hefty fine.
I asked my contracted spirits to scout ahead. They scattered in all directions to recon the area.
With Snow and Shiratama with us, there was nothing to worry about.
Besides, I still had the Wind Dagger—a weapon I had never used before—but it was reassuring just to have it.
As we waited near the entrance to the sixth floor, the spirits returned.
They gathered in the sky, forming a small circle as if discussing something among themselves.
After a short while, they descended to eye level, apparently finished with their meeting.
Then, they pointed diagonally to the right.
“Misuzu, it looks like there’s something that way. Mind if we check it out?”
“Got it. Let’s go!” Misuzu replied, moving to my left side. We held hands and followed the spirits deeper into the forest.
The massive trees forced us to weave left and right, and before long, I had lost track of which way we had come from.
Well, with the spirits and Snow around, we’d have no trouble finding our way back.
As we continued walking, the spirits suddenly stopped in midair.
Then, Freesia unleashed a light spell.
A laser-like beam of light pierced through a tree trunk.
In the next moment, the enormous tree dissolved into shimmering particles of light.
Turning to Misuzu, I said, “That was apparently a monster called a Trent.”
“No way! I never would’ve guessed that was a monster!” Misuzu exclaimed.
You really can’t tell them apart from normal trees.
Fortunately, they don’t have much attack power, and with the armor we’re wearing, their attacks shouldn’t even scratch us.
We resumed following the spirits.
Along the way, we defeated three more Trents.
Unfortunately, all three only dropped magic stones.
After walking for a while, the spirits stopped again in front of a particularly large tree.
Another Trent?
That’s what I thought, but then Anemone, the wind spirit, pointed toward the top of the tree.
“Looks like there’s something up there. I’ll go check it out,” I said.
“Alright, I’ll wait here,” Misuzu replied.
I gave a signal, and Anemone activated her wind magic.
My body rose gently into the air, carrying me upward.
When I reached the top of the tree, I spotted a treasure chest!
It didn’t seem to be trapped.
I opened it and found a rolled-up sheet of paper inside.
The paper was about the size of a diploma or certificate.
“What does it say?” I unrolled it to check.
It bore a strange pattern, like a magic circle, drawn in crimson ink.
The next moment, I felt something being inscribed into my mind.
Then, a mechanical female voice echoed in my head:
《Rare Skill: Change acquired》
Right after that, the paper disintegrated into particles of light and vanished.
