Chapter 107: Preparations for the Cultural Festival Have Begun — Part 10

“…Are you sure it’s okay to take her to the clubroom like this?”

“Yeah. Once you introduce her as someone interested in the literature club who just wants to help out, they should accept her without issue.”

It was after school on the last day of midterm exams.

Around noon, after homeroom had ended, Kyori and I left the classroom and were now reviewing our plan in a secluded courtyard near the club building.

“In that case, I’ll try to act as natural as possible when we go in.”

“That would help. I’ve also set up alerts to detect any unusual behavior, but if anything feels off to you, let me know immediately.”

“Understood… Alright, I’m going.”

At Kyori’s signal, I activated my [Item Box], and a doll—visually indistinguishable from a human and dressed in our school uniform—appeared.

After I injected it with MP to activate it, she gave us a polite bow, her demeanor calm and gentle.

“Good morning, Master, Lady Kyori. What would you like of me today?”

“Go to the literature club with Kyori, blend in as a student of this school, and focus solely on getting close to the club president. That’s your mission.”

“Understood. Lady Kyori, shall we go?”

“Y-Yes… Okay, I’ll be back later.”

As I watched Kyori and Ibara head off toward the club building, I let out a deep sigh.

…Yeah, it still feels strange seeing Ibara act so obediently toward us. Talking to her puts me on edge. Maybe I should’ve altered her appearance a bit after all? But changing her too much might’ve made her look even weirder...

“That thing really does look like a normal person unless you’re told otherwise.”

A voice behind me broke my train of thought.

Startled, I turned around to find Alicia standing there, arms crossed, nodding in agreement.

“G-Geez, don’t sneak up like that.”

“Sorry for the scare. But I can’t exactly be seen chatting with you casually in front of your precious girlfriend, can I?”

“Well… yeah, true.”

Kyori doesn’t know about Alicia’s real identity or our deeper relationship. That’s because Alicia strictly told me not to tell her.

Considering Alicia’s line of work—which definitely isn’t something that can be made public—it makes sense. And honestly, I’ll probably need her shady skills again down the line.

So for now, Alicia and I maintain a superficial connection: just classmates who happened to be in the same group during the school trip. Nothing close, nothing distant—just neutral.

“Anyway, thanks for setting up Ibara’s school registration. That really helped.”

“Don’t mention it. It benefits us too. We definitely don’t want a power outburst causing a panic in a place full of civilians.”

Ibara has been enchanted with a constant [Concealment Spell] to make people believe she’s a real student here. Still, in the off chance someone gets suspicious and checks her student records, I needed Alicia to create a fake identity for her.

“By the way, I heard that doll was originally the same one used during the incident with the Kuon family. Did you look into its origin?”

“Of course. I tried everything. What I found out was… it was created using an ability I’ve never seen before. No idea who made it. I even tried extracting memory logs or anything similar, but got nothing.”

“So, no idea who made it or how. Any risk of it going berserk?”

“I fused it with shikigami core scripts and made it a subordinate familiar. So I think the chances of it going rogue are basically zero. Just in case, I also added a lockdown trigger in case it behaves strangely.”

“…Well, I guess we have no choice but to trust that for now. Still, I’m surprised Kyori agreed to use that doll. The appearance alone…”

“She definitely didn’t like it at first. When I showed it to her during our study break, she looked super uncomfortable. But given our options, this was the most practical solution, and she accepted it as a temporary measure.”

After modifying Ibara, I introduced her to Kyori during one of our test prep sessions. Unsurprisingly, Kyori was visibly disturbed and asked, “We’re really using this… as-is?”

I managed to convince her, but even now, every time she sees Ibara, she looks like she’s trying hard not to turn away.

I probably should work on a more palatable version. Regardless of what she’s made of, Ibara will likely be with us for a long time.

Oh right—there was something I wanted to ask Alicia too.

“By the way, did Ikoma-senpai have any power outbursts during exam week?”

“There were two notable events. First, the stage actor she follows on social media suddenly moved into the apartment next door. The next day, she was harassed by delinquents—again—but this time that same actor happened to save her and even asked to connect with her on a messaging app.”

“…And how did Ikoma-senpai react?”

“She apologized repeatedly and ran away. Probably realized it was another ability outburst.”

So… her favorite actor just happens to move in next door and then rescues her the very next day from another scuffle. Sounds like a manga plot, but that would never happen in real life.

Then when he tried to connect with her, she panicked and fled.

She’s clearly realized that her fantasies are becoming reality—thanks to her power—and she feels guilty about it.

Given that she also mentioned being bullied by boys in elementary school, it’s no wonder she has trouble with men in general.

That means she’s probably dealing with a massive amount of stress right now.

…Still, standing here thinking about it won’t help. Let’s just hope Ibara manages to win her over.

“Well, I should get going. Contact me if anything strange happens.”

“Got it. See you at school next week.”

“Right.”

Alicia waved and walked toward the school building.

Alright then…

(No alerts from Ibara or the drone I placed in the clubroom. Seems like things are going well… so far.)

Still, just in case… I told Kana I’d be late today. I’ll stay nearby and keep watch for a bit.

—!

Just then, my phone buzzed.

Worried, I quickly checked it. A message from Kyori.

And its contents were completely unexpected.

“Sorry, but… Ikoma-senpai wants to know your messaging app ID. What should I do?”

A few minutes earlier…

“Nice to meet you. My name is Ibara Yuna.”

“H-Hi… I’m Ikoma Juri, president of the literature club…”

According to the plan, I—Kyori Kuon—introduced the doll, Ibara, to Ikoma-senpai.

Senpai returned the greeting nervously.

Shuu had assured me Ibara was safe to use now, and I understood the necessity of this situation. Still, sitting next to someone who nearly tried to kill me less than two weeks ago… it’s hard not to be on edge.

“…This is the girl I mentioned before. The one interested in joining the literature club.”

“Y-Yes, I remember…! Although, since we’re in the middle of culture festival prep, we can’t officially accept new members…”

“I understand. But helping with the festival preparations isn’t a problem, right?”

“R-Right. But… are you sure? It’s mostly repetitive, boring work. And someone as pretty as Ibara-san could probably join a more glamorous club…”

“I want to be in this club! I’ll help however I can!”

“O-Okay… Then could you start by making copies of these documents?”

Senpai, overwhelmed by Ibara’s enthusiasm—or maybe just giving up—handed her a task.

“If she’s already overwhelmed, she might misinterpret Ibara’s interest as just another accidental effect of her power.”

That’s what Shuu had predicted while we were planning. Looks like he was right.

I do feel guilty about deceiving her like this, but… we cleared the first hurdle.

All that’s left is for her and Ibara to become friendly.

That’s what I was thinking—until…

“U-Um, Kyori-chan? Can I ask you something?”

Senpai blushed and leaned closer.

“Of course. What is it?”

“U-Um, you know that Iori-san who visited the club before? Do you… know his messaging app ID? If you do, I’d really like to get in touch with him…”

I froze.

Senpai once told me that she was traumatized by boys due to bullying back in elementary school.

And now she’s asking for a boy’s contact info…?

“I do know it, but… Senpai, he’s a guy. Are you sure you’re okay with that?”

“Y-Yes, I think so. He was kind and seemed like he really understood my problem… I just… want to talk to him again…”

The “problem” she’s referring to is almost certainly her power—where her fantasies become reality.

And from what Shuu told me, he’s been investigating her abilities, so she probably sensed he understood her situation.

…Even so, she’s never been able to talk comfortably with any other guys.

Why only Shuu…?

“Alright. Let me check with him first to make sure it’s okay to share it.”

“O-Okay. T-Thank you…!”

I opened my phone and sent Shuu the message—

—while feeling a vague unease stirring inside me.
