Chapter 106: Preparations for the Cultural Festival Have Begun — Part 9
"I'm home."
"Welcome back, Onii-chan!"
When I returned home and entered the living room, I found Kana lying on the sofa, munching on snacks after coming back from the dojo.
"Hey, the living room was super clean—did someone come over?"
"Yeah. My girlfriend came over."
"Oh, your girlfrie—wait, girlfriend!?"
No point trying to cover it up now. She’d find out eventually anyway. Might as well just admit it outright.
That’s what I figured when I casually said it—but Kana reacted way more dramatically than I expected.
"Uh, um... since when?"
"Since Monday this week."
"This week...? Then, when you told me not to come home until the evening..."
"Yeah, she was here."
"Uhh, umm... wha—?"
Kana completely froze up at my response.
Well, I guess it’s not that surprising. If my little sister suddenly told me she had a boyfriend, I’d probably panic too.
"Anyway, she’s coming over again tomorrow for a study session. I’ll give you 10,000 yen for lunch and stuff, so go hang out somewhere. Oh, and there’s leftover pizza, fried chicken, and salad from lunch in the fridge—just heat that up for dinner."
"O-Okay..."
Having said what I needed to, I headed straight upstairs to my room.
I wanted to try out the idea I came up with back at the station as soon as possible.
Leaving a frozen Kana behind, I went up to my room.
"Onii-chan... has a girlfriend..."
◇◇◇
"There it is."
Back in my room, I changed into loungewear, sat at my desk, and opened my skill list.
While I was killing time after defeating that giant UMA and waiting for Alicia and the others to arrive, I had spotted a certain skill—and immediately learned it.
“Appraisal.”
I activated the Appraisal skill to check the details of the newly acquired one.
Target: Skill – Mimicry
Level: 1/10
Description: Consumes MP to record a human’s movements and allows the user to reproduce them as their own.
Additional Notes: n/a
(If the explanation holds, this should be exactly what I hoped it’d be.)
Nothing would start unless I actually tested it.
So... something I could try inside the room, and something where I could feel the skill’s effects directly. That narrows it down—yeah, that’ll work.
I opened a video site on my phone and searched for "drawing videos." I tapped on one where you could clearly see the illustrator’s hand.
As the video played, I activated Mimicry and watched the illustrator skillfully draw a beautiful anime girl.
When the video ended, I opened a blank notebook and picked up a pen, strongly imagining myself "reproducing" the illustrator’s drawing movements.
Honestly, I have zero artistic talent.
There’s no way I should be able to draw like that illustrator—but...
(...H-Huh?)
My hand, gripping the pen, began tracing smooth, confident lines—just like in the video. I was drawing the same anime girl, stroke for stroke.
However, once the coloring phase began, my hand suddenly stopped moving.
(...Did it stop because I don’t have any coloring tools?)
There was no nausea or discomfort like when I run out of MP. That probably means the lack of proper tools halted the Mimicry.
(Then next time, I’ll record only up to the sketching phase—and test whether seeing body movements is essential.)
This time, I picked a video that didn’t show hands—only voice and the screen—and activated Mimicry while watching.
(Alright, what’ll happen now...?)
After the video ended, I opened a new notebook page and picked up my pen—but my hand didn’t move automatically.
So yeah, it seems you do need to see the person’s body movements to trigger the effect.
Still, that’s a minor drawback. It won’t interfere with my idea.
With that, I opened my messaging app and texted Kyoji.
I got a read receipt right away, and a reply just minutes later.
“Sorry to message you out of the blue. Can I ask you for a favor if you’re free?”
“No problem. What is it?”
“Remember when you showed me how to copy the basic magic array earlier? I need a video of that—and also the part where you implant the subjugation spell into a shikigami. Ideally with your hand movements included.”
“I can do that. But what are you planning to use it for?”
“That thing we talked about—using a shikigami to disguise itself as a student and cover for Ikoma-senpai. I figured out how to pull it off, but I need the basic array and subjugation spell to do it.”
“Got it. It might take a little while to record, is that okay?”
“Totally fine. Thanks in advance.”
That ended our exchange for now.
Until Kyoji sent the videos, I figured I’d study Mimicry more deeply.
"Alright. Let’s do this."
For indoor testing, drawing seemed like the best fit.
This time, I’d make sure I had all the required tools ready.
Also, I wanted to see what happened when the skill leveled up.
With that in mind, I opened the video site again and started searching for more videos I could use to test Mimicry.
◇◇◇
"Oh, he already sent it."
About 30 minutes into my testing session, I got a notification from Kyoji.
I tapped it, and sure enough, he had sent me two videos: one of him copying the basic array, and one of him implanting the subjugation spell into a shikigami—with clear views of his hand movements.
“Sorry it took a bit. Will this work?”
“It’s perfect. Thanks so much. And sorry for asking something so weird out of nowhere.”
“I should be apologizing for leaving everything to you. Let me know if I can help again, okay?”
“I will. Talk to you tomorrow.”
“Okay. See you tomorrow.”
I ended the chat and began watching the videos while activating Mimicry to record them.
Once that was done, I prepared the copied shikigami seal Kyoji had given me and a blank sheet of paper, arranging them on my desk.
(...Please work...)
With a silent prayer, I held my right hand over the original seal just like in the video.
My hand began to move on its own, perfectly replicating Kyoji’s actions. The five-pointed star and magic sigil lifted from the note and were etched into the blank paper.
“Appraisal.”
Target: Shikigami Tag
Effect: A sealed fox cub-type shikigami. Behaves like a real fox cub.
Level: 10/10
Notes: Recognizes Iori Osamu as its master and is subjugated to him.
Seeing the appraisal results, I pumped a fist internally.
Finally—I had everything I needed.
Now it was time to combine all the pieces.
“Item Box.”
I activated my storage skill and pulled out the item I’d kept sealed ever since the battle at the Kuon estate.
It was a doll—realistic enough to pass for a living human, capable of fooling others. It had been immobilized by ice magic from within and without.
Its name was Briar.
“Design.”
I selected Briar and the newly crafted shikigami seal as materials, and activated the Design skill to generate the necessary blueprint.
Then I used Blacksmithing Art to assemble the components.
I repaired the missing arm using Ice Magic and Water Magic...
"And... done."
What stood before me now was a beautiful blonde girl in a red kimono, identical to how she looked during the battle at Kuon’s place. You couldn’t tell it was a doll at all.
“Appraisal.”
Target: Mimic Doll
Effect: A modified Phantom Doll “Briar” embedded with shikigami’s basic and subjugation arrays.
Has a pseudo-personality like the Phantom Doll and can act autonomously. Additional abilities can be added through modifications.
Status: Inactive
Notes: Newly created via "Design." Pseudo-personality currently inactive. Joints frozen by Ice Magic. Requires unsealing and MP to reboot.
Recognizes Iori Osamu as master.
No problems there.
Now for the final test—activation.
I took a deep breath, dispelled the ice magic seals, and infused the doll with MP.
Its eyes slowly opened, and a gentle smile bloomed on its face.
“—You are my master, yes? This body and soul are yours to command. Please use me however you see fit.”
The doll spoke in the exact same voice as when we first met.
