Chapter : Flame Dragon Brigade

After that, we spent the night in the forest and made it back to the town of Tansa the next day. Once we collected our reward at the Adventurers’ Guild, I handed over the plate of the adventurer who had died in Gahon Forest.

When I told the staff that the Dolls Cult might have been behind the killing, their expressions stiffened. They exchanged grave looks and started whispering to the other clerks nearby.

“Dolls Cult again, huh? That makes three now.”
“Yeah. And every single one of them was from the Flame Dragon Brigade.”
“So that means…”

A few minutes later, the door to the adjacent waiting room creaked open. I turned to look—and saw a woman standing there, framed in the doorway. A beastkin, with vibrant orange hair.

She looked to be in her mid-twenties, and she was tall—easily over 170 centimeters. Cat ears twitched atop her head, her skin a sun-kissed bronze. She wore sleek, glossy black clothes, adorned with a golden collar and matching bracelets. Then I saw it: a golden plate fastened to her belt.

An S-rank adventurer.

She strode up to the counter without hesitation and slammed her palm down on the desk.

“Hey! Tell me straight—did you really find the body of our man, Lux?!”
“Y-yes, Miss Melt,” the clerk stammered.

The male receptionist handed the woman—Melt—a blue adventurer’s plate.
“The number matches the registry. There’s no mistake.”
“…Tch.”

Melt’s sharp, fang-like teeth ground together audibly.
“I warned them to be careful…”

Her whole body trembled, and the orange fur of her tail stood on end.
“…So, who found Lux?”
“That person over there.”

The clerk pointed toward us. Melt turned on her heel, approached us, and bowed her head low.

“My thanks. Because of you, we know where Lux fell.”
“It was just luck. I happened to find him,” I replied, meeting her eyes.

“My name’s Yakumo. E-rank adventurer.”
“I’m Melt. Leader of the Flame Dragon Brigade.”
“The Flame Dragon Brigade… the ones who wiped out the Dolls Cult’s hidden village on Mount Segasa…”
“So you’ve heard of us.”
“Of course. You’re famous—big numbers, unmatched strength.”
“I make sure my people can handle any kind of dirty job,” she said, curling her right hand into a fist. The sound of joints popping filled the air.

“Yakumo. Can you draw me a map of where Lux died? We want to bury him properly. I’ll pay you for it.”
“No, I don’t need money.”
“You sure?”
“Yes. I don’t want to take payment for something like this.”
“…I see.”

Melt’s dark green eyes bored into me, steady and sharp.
“Yakumo, I’ll remember your name. Thank you.”

She bowed to me once again.
