Chapter: Yakumo, Ryza, and Teto
“Fools!”
Rugal shouted.
“We outnumber you! Kill them all and offer their lives to the Dolls!”
The followers charged at the adventurers, black daggers flashing. The clash of steel and shouts of rage filled the air.
Moving my gaze, I saw Ryza engaged in combat with Teto.
“Teto! You’re the one I will kill!”
Ryza thrust her dagger, but Teto dodged with a smile.
“I don’t think an E-rank like you can manage it,” he said.
“You’re an F-rank mage yourself!”
Ryza launched a kick, which Teto blocked with his elbow.
“Sorry to disappoint, but that’s wrong,” he said calmly.
“Wrong? What do you mean?”
“My actual strength is that of a B-rank or higher magic warrior.”
Teto narrowed his eyes and extended his left hand. Sharp icicles materialized around him.
“Kuh…”
Ryza leaned back, narrowly avoiding the icy spikes.
“Too slow!”
Teto dashed toward the off-balance Ryza, thrusting his dagger. The blade pierced her shoulder, staining her clothing red. As she stumbled back, he laughed.
“Honestly, I don’t want to kill you, but I have no choice. Well then…”
I stepped in front of Ryza, pointing my Magivore dagger at Teto.
“Yakumo, huh…”
Teto lowered his stance slightly, aiming his dagger at me.
“You’ve impressed me. I didn’t expect you to investigate Rikkel’s corpse yourself.”
“With my ability, descending into a hole is simple.”
“Right. I’ve seen your skill a few times.”
He studied me silently.
“You’re strong… far stronger than any E-rank should be.”
“Then will you surrender?”
“Heh, no. Even if you’re strong, you’re still weaker than me.”
Teto licked his lips, forming a teasing smile.
“Your unique skill is rare, so it can surprise opponents. Your weapon is first-class. For a first encounter, you’re a formidable opponent. But I know how you fight.”
“Then there’s no choice but to fight.”
“Exactly. If I don’t annihilate you all, I’ll become a wanted bounty.”
“…What a shame.”
Our eyes met.
“Fine, I’ll finish this in ten seconds.”
With that, Teto swung his dagger left and right. Almost immediately, a follower attacked me from the left.
“Magic Defense Wall Level 5!”
A white paper barrier appeared before the follower.
“I know that technique!”
Teto pressed a knife to his lips and lunged at me. He was chanting a spell.
Five icicles materialized above my head, plummeting downward. I dodged to the right, only for Teto to thrust his dagger where I had been predicted to land. I blocked it with my Magivore dagger.
Simultaneously, Teto extended his left hand toward my face. The air chilled instantly, and a sharp icicle appeared before me. I turned my head just in time to evade it.
“Haha, impressive! But—!”
Teto moved his lips and thrust repeatedly with his dagger. I sidestepped, swinging my Magivore dagger from below. He bent his upper body, anticipating the trajectory.
I poured magic into my dagger; the bluish-white blade lengthened, bending unnaturally. The tip pierced Teto’s shoulder.
“Guh… kuh…”
Teto grimaced, pointing his left hand at my feet. The ground froze instantly. He was attempting to immobilize me with ice magic.
I conjured paper platforms beneath my feet and leapt onto them. Teto clicked his tongue and created distance.
“Stronger than I expected,” he muttered.
“I’ve trained with an A-rank martial artist,” I replied.
I materialized dozens of sheets of paper before him. He sliced through them with his dagger, but I had already shifted to the left.
Perfect position.
I summoned hundreds of sheets and arranged them around him.
“Don’t you realize this is futile?”
Teto sliced the papers before him. His eyes locked on mine.
As expected, he was fast—always securing sightlines, tracking my movement. But…
I charged at Teto, leaping left at the last moment.
“Too slow!”
He anticipated my landing. Then—
I visualized the magic formula in my mind, precisely defining the materialization point.
A tiny sparkle like a grain of sand appeared diagonally ahead. Around it, ultra-thin transparent paper formed.
I stepped onto a paper cut to the shape of my shoe sole, swinging my elongated dagger downward.
Teto’s reaction was delayed by my seemingly suspended motion; the blade pierced his shoulder.
“Kuh…”
Teto quickly retreated and began chanting a spell.
At that moment, Ryza leapt at him from midair, her dagger stabbing into his back.
“Gah…ugh!”
Teto twisted his body, aiming his left hand at Ryza.
No magic for you!
I infused magic into my dagger; the two-meter-long blade severed his left wrist. Simultaneously, Ryza thrust her dagger into his chest.
“Ah…”
Teto’s eyes widened, knees buckling.
“N-No… I… can’t… die…!”
His body collapsed; the faint sound of breath ceased.
“Teto… why…?”
Ryza’s voice trembled slightly.
“Ryza! There are still plenty of followers left!”
I patted her shoulder.
“There’s no time to think now.”
“Ah… right. Got it.”
Ryza’s expression hardened. Together, we launched an assault on the followers fighting nearby adventurers.
