Chapter: Cave
An hour later, we set off toward the cave Dazzle had discovered. The forest was dim, with massive tree trunks draped in green moss as far as the eye could see.
As we walked, the chatter of the surrounding adventurers reached my ears.
“Didn’t expect them to find the temple this fast.”
“Yeah. At this rate, we might be back in town by tomorrow.”
“Gotta hand it to the Holy Sword Guild. Heard they botched a big job recently, but this time they really came through. Good for them.”
“True. They may be ranked E, but with that many combat skills, they’ve got a bright future ahead.”
I shifted my gaze toward the front of the procession. Alber and the others were leading the way, with Dazzle walking beside Melt, chatting like they were the best of friends. His face radiated smug confidence.
A few hours later, we finally arrived at the base of a sheer cliff face. Towering boulders loomed before us, stacked one upon another like nature’s barricade.
“Right there,” Dazzle announced, pointing at the rocks.
“The cave entrance is between those boulders.”
“Got it. Gregg!” Melt called out to his vice-leader.
“Send Rikkel’s team in to scout.”
“Understood.”
Gregg summoned three B-rank adventurers and gave them their orders. The trio slipped between the boulders, weapons ready, eyes sharp as they vanished into the shadows.
Ten minutes later, a member of the Flame Dragon Guild jogged back to us from the rear lines.
“We’re moving in. Get ready.”
“Did you find the temple?” Kinako asked the man flatly.
“Not yet. But the inside is huge, and we found tents that the cultists were using.”
“Then the odds of the temple being in there are high.”
“Exactly. Lord Melt intends to crush them in one strike.”
The words made everyone tense. The air shifted, heavy with anticipation.
We had no clue what the inside of that cave looked like—or how many cultists were waiting for us. Sure, we had Melt, an S-rank adventurer, and several A-ranks with us… but that was no reason to get careless.
My lips pressed into a thin line as I brushed my fingers against the short sword at my waist—the magic-eater blade.
Ten more minutes passed before we squeezed through the gap between the boulders and stepped inside.
The cave was cold, the air damp and heavy. Pale blue moss clung to the walls, glowing faintly and casting an eerie light across the stone.
We descended a gentle slope until the passage forked into two.
At the front, Melt gave a series of hand signals. The Flame Dragon members split into two groups and disappeared down separate tunnels without hesitation.
As expected, the Flame Dragon Guild was a cut above the rest—disciplined, efficient, their movements sharp and confident. The Holy Sword Guild had its share of talented members, but overall, these guys were on another level.
And honestly? It felt reassuring having them on our side.
“Everyone, move down the left tunnel!”
Gregg’s voice boomed, and the adventurers began marching once more.
