Chapter : A New Enemy
We were making our way east through the back alleys.
After weaving through narrow, winding paths, we emerged into what looked like a plaza.
"Alright! No one's here!"
A member of the Moonlight Brigade at the front shouted.
At his words, I let out a sigh of relief.
Thanks to the reduced number of skeleton soldiers, getting this far had been relatively easy.
Now, if we could regroup with Corinne and the others who had taken a different route, and escape to the upper dungeon through the eastern passage...
We moved forward cautiously through the empty plaza.
And then—
"Graaaagh!"
A scream came from a Moonlight Brigade member behind me.
When I turned around, I saw one of them had collapsed, and behind him stood a massive black spider.
The spider was over five meters tall and more than seven meters wide. Its eight red eyes glowed ominously, and its body was covered in sharp, purple spikes.
"It's the Queen Magisteel Spider!"
Kinako shouted.
"Watch out! If she's here, that means..."
From all around us, countless Magisteel Spiders began to appear.
Seeing over three hundred of them, everyone's faces went pale.
"This is... not good."
Arumine, standing beside me, spoke in a hoarse voice.
"To get attacked by a swarm of Magisteel Spiders here... I guess the god of fate, Dalis, must really hate us."
"But we can’t give up now."
I pointed the blade of my Magic-Eater Dagger at the queen spider.
We had to get through this and reach the rendezvous point.
"Kiiiiiishaaa!"
The Magisteel Spiders launched their assault all at once. Threads of white silk shot through the air, falling onto the bodies of the Moonlight Brigade members.
"Tch! I’m out of booze!"
Kinako slashed the threads with her extended claws, swatting away two pouncing Magisteel Spiders with the pads of her paws.
Pirun and the other brigade members also engaged the spiders lunging at them from all directions.
We have to reduce their numbers—
I materialized hundreds of paper daggers.
The densest cluster... is on the right.
The floating paper daggers shot forward in unison. Blades thinner than a millimeter pierced through the Magisteel Spiders one after another.
Good! Now I can target the queen spider from the right.
Leaping over the corpses of the spiders, I charged toward the queen spider from the side.
She noticed me instantly, raising a hairy black foreleg. With a sharp whoosh, the limb swung down.
I rolled across the ground to dodge the strike and moved to her flank.
In that moment, the purple spikes on her body shot out.
Using a spider corpse as a shield, I blocked the incoming barrage.
"Yakumo-kun! Get back!"
As Arumine's voice rang out, a massive magic circle appeared above the queen spider's head.
The moment I retreated, a rain of light poured down from the circle, searing the queen's body and sending up plumes of white smoke.
"Kyaaaaaah!"
Letting out a shrill screech, the queen spider charged at Arumine, all eight legs pounding forward.
No—! I have to protect her!
A sharply pointed foreleg came swinging down at Arumine.
Please make it in time!
I threw myself at her, and the two of us rolled together, narrowly avoiding the blow.
"Arumine, get back!"
I materialized ten chains of paper, binding the queen spider to halt her movement.
"Kyaaaaah!"
The queen shrieked and released a burst of spikes in all directions. They pierced both Moonlight Brigade members and enemy spiders alike.
"Urgh...!"
A brigade member and a Magisteel Spider collapsed simultaneously.
"Damn it..."
I bit down hard on my lip and charged at the queen spider.
She was too dangerous. Even with allies nearby, she had no hesitation using wide-area attacks. We had to take her down before the casualties piled up.
Sliding beneath her massive body, I poured magical energy into my Magic-Eater Dagger. The bluish-white blade extended over a meter long. With it, I slashed at the joint of one of her legs.
Yellow bodily fluid sprayed out, and the queen's massive frame staggered.
"One more!"
With all the strength I could muster, I swung the dagger again.
In that moment, the queen bent her remaining seven legs and leapt high into the air.
Her massive black body landed dozens of meters away.
She’s put some distance between us—
But I’m not letting her get away.
