Chapter: Teto
All eyes converged on Teto.
“W-Wait!”
Teto’s cheeks twitched.
“Why are you saying that, Yakumo?”
“Because I’m certain you’re a follower. I checked Rikkel’s body myself.”
“Rikkel’s body?”
Melt’s gaze shifted toward me.
“Yes. There was something I needed to confirm.”
“Something you needed to confirm?”
“The fact that the Armor Golem threw Rikkel into a pit. That makes no sense, right? They left the other adventurers’ bodies untouched.”
“Makes no sense…”
Melt’s eyes went pale as he looked at Teto.
“So I used my paper platform to get inside the pit. When I examined Rikkel’s body, there was a blade wound on his back.”
“That… is…”
Teto’s words faltered.
“I don’t know why the Golem acted that way, but the wound couldn’t have been caused just by hitting a sharp rock when he fell.”
“That’s not possible. The cut was uniform in depth, and the skin looked slightly burned. That’s a characteristic of a fire-element weapon.”
“Then it’s not me. My weapon is a staff.”
Teto forced a strained smile and showed me his staff.
“True. But maybe you secretly carried a fire-element dagger in your magic pouch?”
I pointed to the pouch hanging from Teto’s waist.
“Besides, Rikkel’s wound looked familiar to me.”
“Familiar?”
“It looked just like the wound on Lux’s body we found in the forest. You were nearby then, right?”
“Are you trying to say I killed Lux too?”
“That’s a high possibility. You were with Riza’s party, but you went on a separate path, which could have given you the chance.”
“T-That’s just your imagination!”
Teto’s voice trembled slightly.
“There’s no way I’d be accused of being a follower just for that!”
“And that’s not all,” Kinako said.
“Yakumo asked me to keep an eye on you. I watched your actions during the battle just now.”
“My actions?”
“Yeah. You kept striking the Golems’ chests with ice-arrow magic, over and over. Magic that didn’t even work.”
“That’s because I’m F-Rank.”
Teto touched the white plate on his belt.
“It’s natural for my magic to be weak.”
“…I see. Then why didn’t a single Golem attack you even once? I was watching the whole time.”
“That’s a lie! The Golems were targeting me too!”
“Teto…”
I pointed at his crooked staff.
“There’s a red jewel embedded in it. That wasn’t there the first time we met, right?”
“…I added it before this job to enhance magic, a ‘Red Moon Stone.’”
“The color seems slightly different for a Red Moon Stone… That color… it looks just like the jewels inside the Golems’ mouths. You were controlling them with that jewel, weren’t you?”
“Don’t be ridiculous!”
Teto shouted.
“If you’re going to doubt me so much, fine! I’ll show you everything in my pouch. There’s no fire dagger, not even a regular dagger.”
Teto reached into his magical pouch.
“Grab him!” Kinako shouted.
“Too slow!”
Teto grinned and pulled out a purple crystal orb, slamming it onto the ground.
Purple smoke erupted, and a massive dragon appeared.
The dragon’s scales were yellow-green, and countless tentacles sprouted from its enormous body. The tentacles’ tips had circular rows of sharp teeth, and its serpentine body writhed sinuously.
“Plant Dragon! Kill the adventurers!”
At Teto’s command, the tentacles lashed out, attacking the stunned adventurers. The teeth tore through heads with a chilling snap.
“Ahaha! I didn’t expect to use the Plant Dragon here, but oh well.”
Teto stuck out his tongue and ran toward the inner pit.
A few adventurers chased him, but the tentacles blocked their path.
“Gyuuiiii!”
The Plant Dragon let out a high-pitched roar, exhaling a red-mist-like breath. The armor and flesh of the adventurers in front began to melt.
“Gaaahhhh!”
The adventurers fell to the ground, thrashing in agony.
