Takasugi vs. Slime
We arrived at the first basement floor of the dungeon.
Just like it showed on the dungeon map, it was a vast grassy plain.
There was a single path running through the middle, with grasslands stretching out to both sides.
To the right, I could see a hill in the distance.
I didn’t want to head uphill—this axe is heavy.
Plus, the grass might make me slip and fall.
This decision... it’s for Kudou’s sake too.
After all, I’m the party leader—the kind of guy who looks out for his teammates!
So, we decided to head into the grassland on the left side.
We found a slime right away.
It looked like a light blue ball.
It bounced and rolled around, but it wasn’t very fast.
Perfect prey.
I raised my axe high and swung it straight down toward the slime!
But the slime rolled to the left.
It looked like the blade hit just a little to the right of its center.
I kept swinging. Again, and again!
But I couldn’t land a clean hit—the slime just kept rolling left and right.
This time, I swung from the upper right down to the lower left.
Still no good.
No matter how many times I tried, I couldn’t defeat the thing.
I changed where I aimed, adjusting the blade’s impact point each time…
"Damn it…!"
As a last resort, I twisted my hips and did a full golf-style swing from right to left.
The slime went flying.
Kudou, watching from behind, shouted,
“Nice shot!”
…Is he stupid?
I didn’t come here to play golf!
Read the room, for god’s sake!
I couldn’t take it anymore.
My arms were twitching.
The axe was too heavy—I couldn’t even lift it anymore.
I had no choice.
I really had no choice.
I gave up on defeating the slime.
I told Kudou we were heading back, and he helped me hoist the axe onto my shoulder.
As I trudged along, feeling down, I heard a loud sound behind me.
What the…?
I turned around.
Kudou had slipped and fallen, now sprawled on the ground.
“Hey! Kudou! You alright?” I asked.
“I’m fine!” he replied cheerfully.
Then he grinned and said,
“Takasugi! Check it out! When I fell, the slime got stuck between my shield and the ground. I killed it!”
He held out a small magic stone for me to see.
…Is that so.
Good for you.
So Kudou, the big shield user, got the honor of our first official monster kill...
Damn it!
I screamed internally.
Kudou, completely oblivious to how I felt, declared,
“Shield Attack!”
Shield Attack, huh?
What a dumb name.
He was over the moon, practically bouncing with joy.
...Yeah, yeah.
Good for you.
I, on the other hand, wasn’t enjoying this at all.
And just like that, we left the dungeon.
Translator’s Note:
-
スライム: Classic weak monster in Japanese RPGs, often used to show a beginner’s struggle.
-
ナイスショット: Literally “nice shot,” often used in golf; the humor here is that Takasugi feels mocked.
-
魔石 (maseki): A common loot item from monsters in fantasy settings—likely valuable or usable in crafting.
