Golden Week vacation had started.

On one of my mom’s days off, just the two of us went to the shopping mall.

We chatted while browsing around and had a nice time shopping. Afterwards, we grabbed lunch at the food court.

When we got back home and were drinking tea, my mom’s phone rang.

It was the Explorer’s Association. They said my brother got seriously injured…

Mom and I rushed to the clinic that’s part of the Explorer’s branch office.

But when we got there, he wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

I called his phone.

He said he was in the cafeteria on the second floor.

Wait, seriously injured? That didn’t sound right.

Mom and I quickly took the escalator up.

And there he was—just like always.

He was hanging out with his party members, chatting and laughing.

And there was someone else too.

It was Shiraishi-kun.

Why was he here?

My brother said Shiraishi-kun healed his injuries.

Apparently, Shiraishi is a spirit user, and he used his contracted spirits’ power to heal my brother and the others.

“Thanks a lot, Shiraishi-kun!” my brother said.

He really seemed to like Shiraishi.

Maybe it was because they both had lost their dads, both had little sisters, and both were trying to send money back home from dungeon runs.

That evening, my brother invited Shiraishi to have dinner with us.

Mom went all out and made sukiyaki for the first time in a while.

After Shiraishi left and we were cleaning up, Mom started asking me all sorts of questions.

She seemed worried about Shiraishi, since he lives alone.

When I told her he usually just has bread and a drink for lunch at school, she said, “That’s not enough—nutrition is important.”

I also mentioned he does some gardening at home.

Mom told me, “Go check on him sometime. Make sure he’s doing okay.”

So, I decided I would stop by Shiraishi-kun’s place sometime soon.
