The Branch Manager Investigates the Left-Side Wall
At last, the investigation on top of the left-side wall begins.
I put on my boots, leather armor, and helmet.
Together with the team, I head down to the dungeon’s second basement level.
We greet the security guards stationed there, then start climbing the scaffolding.
A man with the job class of thief leads the way, climbing one after another.
Once we reach the top of the wall, the investigation begins.
The Research Institute staff are taking photos of the cactus-like plants and discussing them while referring to something like a field guide.
I decide to leave this area to the researchers and go to check the goddess statue.
I give instructions to the thief to continue the exploration.
After a while, the thief returns and reports he found the goddess statue.
We follow him, going around behind the rocks and squeezing sideways through a narrow gap.
When we come to an open area, the thief points ahead.
Carved into the rock face is a beautiful goddess statue.
The whole staff is captivated by its stunning beauty.
I call everyone’s attention, and the investigation around the statue begins.
There was no treasure chest at the base of the statue.
It was probably a type of treasure chest that appears only once — once the treasure is taken, it never reappears.
After a while, the investigation finishes with the report that besides the cactus, nothing noteworthy was found.
We head back the way we came.
Then we meet up again with the Research Institute staff.
According to their explanation, it really is a new species of plant.
They used shovels to dig up the cactus, collecting a whole specimen including roots.
For another cactus, they cut it at the trunk, collecting the upper part including sap-like fluid.
They want to check whether the cut part will regenerate.
Also, if they collect a whole cactus including roots from the spot, will it remain barren, or will it grow back?
There are many ongoing questions they want to investigate.
So they requested the scaffolding be left as is.
According to my plan, I intended to dismantle the scaffolding here and move it to the right-side wall.
There, we’d reassemble it and investigate the right-side wall’s top.
The arrival date for the priests dispatched from headquarters is also decided.
When I said this was impossible, they asked to build scaffolding again on the left side separately.
They also said the Research Institute would cover those costs, including the security fees.
That way, we can proceed with the right-side wall investigation as planned.
I agreed.
Back at the branch, I ordered the construction of new scaffolding on the left-side wall.
The investigation of the left-side wall finished without incident, and I sighed in relief.
In a few days, the priests will arrive.
The right-side investigation will begin the day after their arrival.
I hope everything goes smoothly.
Thinking so, I got back to the remaining work.
Translator’s Notes:
-
Job class “Thief” (シーフのJOB): Usually skilled in stealth and agility, suitable for scouting narrow or tricky terrain like the wall’s top and behind rocks.
-
Goddess statue (女神像): A beautiful carved statue—possibly a significant cultural or religious relic in the dungeon.
-
Treasure chest behavior: The note about one-time appearance treasure chests is a common RPG trope, implying the player (or party) only gets one chance to loot it.
-
Plant collection and regeneration: The detailed study of the cactus’s regenerative properties shows the Research Institute’s scientific approach within the fantasy setting.
-
Scaffolding logistics: Practical construction work and budgeting emphasize the grounded, realistic side of dungeon exploration operations.
-
The Branch Manager’s internal planning and concessions show his juggling of organizational and field challenges.
