The Branch Chief Has a Headache (Part 1)
I was in the middle of work when one of my staff came running into my office.
"What’s going on? What happened?"
According to them, a promising young party had encountered monsters in the dungeon.
They managed to defeat the monsters—but their party leader was severely injured.
The other members had also sustained serious wounds.
This is bad.
I dashed toward the lobby.
The party leader was laid out on a stretcher, soaked in blood.
His left arm had been completely severed.
The others were also drenched in blood, suffering from deep lacerations.
"Get a doctor, now!"
We have a clinic next to the branch office, and there's always a physician on standby.
Then, a young man suddenly called out to me, asking me to hold the severed arm.
What the hell is this kid saying...?
But he pressed the bones together at the stump, muttered something under his breath—
—and then the severed arm lit up with a radiant glow.
The next moment, the arm was completely restored.
Am I dreaming...?
The young man continued healing the rest of the injured.
I just stood there in shock, watching the scene unfold.
And when he finished treating everyone and was about to walk off somewhere, I grabbed him and brought him to the branch chief’s office.
The young man’s name was Shiraishi, an F-Rank Explorer.
He claimed he was a Spirit User, and that he’d used spirit power to heal the wounds.
A Spirit User? That’s not a Job formally recognized by the Explorer’s Association.
Still, I contacted headquarters.
But no one would believe me—they said spirits didn’t exist.
Honestly, if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it either.
But the fact remained—the injuries were completely healed.
Even the doctor said that X-rays and exams showed no trace of trauma or scarring.
So I interviewed each of the explorers who were there and compiled a full written report.
I submitted it to headquarters.
Then, I got a call from one of the senior executives.
Apparently, my report had made it to his desk.
He told me:
"Spirits don’t exist. You’re overworked. Why don’t you take a break for a while?"
He completely dismissed everything I said.
Even so, I didn’t give up. I kept pressing the issue.
I insisted—there were multiple witnesses.
Eventually, the compromise we landed on was this wording:
"It may have been the work of a being possibly akin to a light spirit."
Shiraishi had mentioned he could also use dark and wind spirits, in addition to light.
Proving the existence of something invisible is… extremely difficult.
Just how the hell am I supposed to convince that bureaucratic exec who parachuted into HQ...?
Ugh... my stomach hurts.
