Classmate wa Isekai de Yuusha ni Natta kedo, Ore dake Gendai Nihon ni Okizari ni Narimashita - Chapter 101

Chapter 101: Preparations for the Cultural Festival Have Begun — Part 4

“Finally done…”

After finishing my homework and studying for the test, I stretched and glanced at the digital clock on my desk.

The time was 8:55 p.m.

I had sent a message to Alicia, and her reply had come just as I got home. She said it was fine to call her.

(Five more minutes… It’s kind of an awkward time — too short to study, too short to just kill time.)

It was something I should tell her quickly, though. Maybe I should just call her already?

Just as I was thinking that, my phone started ringing. Alicia’s name flashed on the screen.

Maybe she was thinking the same thing. Smiling at the coincidence, I tapped the screen.

“Hello? It’s me. Are you free now?”

“Yeah, no problem.”

“Good. I wanted to talk about something with you.”

“My story can wait. What do you want to ask first?”

“Okay, I just sent you a picture via the chat app. Can you check it?”

Following her instructions, I opened the chat app and saw an image of a huge red snake-like creature smashing through trees in the dead of night.

“…What is this?”

“It’s part of a giant creature that’s been stirring up some occult fans since summer. The Kuon family thinks it’s a serpent demon.”

“A serpent, huh? So, what exactly do you want me to do about it?”

“Originally, the Kuon family planned to have Kyoji Kuon defeat this demon through the ‘Selection Ceremony.’ But with the family’s reorganization, those plans got canceled, and they haven’t found anyone else to exorcise it.”

“So you want me to go slay this giant snake?”

“Basically, yes. Of course, we have a generous reward ready for you.”

A generous reward, huh.

Since I’ve started dating Kyoji and was thinking of getting a part-time job to cover expenses, Alicia’s offer was tempting.

“Alright, I’ll do it.”

“You’re quick to decide. Then the extermination date is—”

“I’m going right after this call. You know what they say: strike while the iron’s hot.”

I’m the type who doesn’t like to procrastinate on homework either.

Better to finish early if I can.

“I see. Today then, got it. That’s all I needed to say.”

Alicia sounded a bit surprised at my prompt decision.

Now that she was done, I could tell her about my side.

“I want to report something about supernatural powers, or rather, get your advice.”

“About supernatural powers?”

“Yeah, I met someone who seems to have a supernatural ability. They say they can make delusions come true.”

“Delusions becoming reality… that’s quite a power.”

“But that person says they’re not consciously activating it; it just happens on its own and it’s a nuisance. Is it common for powers to activate unconsciously like that?”

“That happens all the time.”

Without hesitation, Alicia answered.

“Actually, people like you who can consciously activate their powers from the start are the minority. Most supernatural ability users activate their powers unconsciously and live their whole lives without realizing they have special powers or what those powers are.”

“Is that how it works?”

“Yes, most don’t know the triggers for their powers. Even if they activate them by chance once, recreating that activation is nearly impossible.”

“I see…”

Now that I think about it, I was basically given hints on how to use powers like a game.

If I’d been handed such power without warning, it would’ve taken ages to realize it on my own.

…Wait.

“This person’s power started to go out of control during summer vacation. From what you said, that means they’ve triggered their ability multiple times without realizing it. Isn’t that strange?”

“…That is odd. Do you know the most recent time their power went out of control?”

“At ■■ Town Station, around 7:20 a.m.”

“I’ll check around that time, just a moment.”

Alicia muted her mic.

It was late, but impressive that she could check with such little information.

Maybe they have an extensive intelligence network or maybe other supernatural users like me are cooperating.

Either way, it was intimidating.

After a while, Alicia unmuted.

“I’ve reviewed the footage. The person you’re talking about is probably Juri Ikoma, right?”

“Yeah, but how did you figure that out so fast?”

“It’s my job. This is basic for me. About this morning: it’s likely a supernatural user was involved, but we can’t confirm it was definitely Juri Ikoma.”

“Meaning?”

“Someone else with powers might be triggering Juri’s delusions to come true.”

“Ah…”

Come to think of it, Bara wasn’t a supernatural user himself — he was a puppet controlled by someone else’s power.

So maybe someone’s playing a prank or meddling with Juri’s powers against her will.

“Another possibility is that the unconscious restraining trigger was released and the power started going wild.”

“That’s a lot to consider…”

“Anyway, we’ll keep an eye on Juri for a while. You just focus on enjoying your time with Kyoji.”

Damn, they knew already.

Or rather, since they could check so quickly after this morning’s incident, it was no surprise they knew about us dating.

“…Please don’t tell anyone else. That would be way too troublesome.”

“I won’t. If we did, it would just make more work for us.”

“Good, thanks. One more thing… I’d like some info on that giant snake.”

“Got it. I’ll send the files right away.”

“Thanks a lot. Talk later.”

“Good luck.”

After ending the call, I glanced at the time on my phone.

(9:25 p.m. Not too late. Plenty of time to handle the monster.)

I locked my room door, just in case, and created a water doll that looked just like me, placing it on the bed.

“Spatial Transfer Magic.”

With preparations complete, I teleported myself from my room to the clearing on the mountain.

◇◇◇

“Feels like it’s been a while since I’ve been here…”

Back when I fought the ox demon and experimented with various skills, the whole area was cratered and barren, no grass or flowers.

Now, there were even flowers growing everywhere.

But what caught my attention most were the huge sinkholes scattered across the clearing — big enough to fit a tanker truck inside.

There was no more info about the giant snake beyond it being spotted in the mountains, its blood-red body, and sightings focused mid-mountain.

But the mountain wasn’t large enough for such a massive creature to hide forever.

So the search area was…

“Yeah, this spot looks good.”

I stood near the deepest sinkhole and nodded.

Using the surrounding stones as materials, I combined my Design and Blacksmithing Technique skills to create several drill-equipped drones, which I sent into the sinkholes and underground tunnels.

After waiting a bit, I sent in my Water’s Eye drones — equipped with explosive functions and ice spikes capable of piercing iron — following the drills underground.

With everything set, I put an MP potion water orb in my mouth and waited for the devices to activate.

If the giant snake really existed, it was probably hiding underground here.

Likely, those sinkholes formed when it surfaced or burrowed underground.

“Oh!”

As I thought this, through Sensory Link, the Water’s Eye drones relayed the image of a huge, slick, red body hidden underground.

Alright, time to begin.

I pressed a drone right against the smooth, massive body and detonated it spectacularly.

The whole mountain trembled, and I heard a rumbling from below.

Whether startled into a panic or angered, the creature surged through underground tunnels at high speed toward an exit.

But I had blocked all other exits with drill drones — too narrow for the giant to pass.

The only exit left open was this sinkhole in front of me.

“…Here it comes.”

The tremors grew more violent beneath my feet.

‘――――――!!’

At that moment, the creature burst from the earth in a cloud of dirt and dust.

It was indeed as rumored — a body larger than a tanker truck, stained blood red, long and slender.

But it looked nothing like a snake.

There were no scales, no eyes, ears, or nose.

Aside from the length and having a mouth with fangs at the head — shaped more like a lamprey than a snake — it shared almost no resemblance to one.
