Chapter 100: Preparations for the Cultural Festival Begin – Part 3
“Uh, um, I… I have something I’d like to talk to you about, so could you please come into this room…!”
Ikoma-senpai nervously pleaded with me to enter the Literature Club’s room.
“But, I’m not a club member. Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to just enter—”
“I-It’s okay! I’m the club president, so…!”
Saying that, Ikoma-senpai pulled out a key from her pocket.
So she’s the club president, huh…? Not to be rude, but she doesn’t strike me as the type to take on a leadership role.
“P-Please…!”
While fumbling, she unlocked the door and gestured for me to go in.
She said she wanted to talk to me, and I was planning to come here anyway. Might as well go along with it.
“Excuse me…”
And so, I stepped into the Literature Club’s room for the first time since Kyouri summoned me here in the spring.
The room hadn’t changed much, and there was no one here besides me and Ikoma-senpai.
“Um, if you’d like… here.”
“Ah, thank you very much.”
She handed me a canned coffee, likely bought from a vending machine.
As I sipped the coffee, wondering what I should do—
“Um, first of all, thank you for helping me back then. And I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to thank you properly at the time…”
“No worries. I acted on my own, so you don’t need to feel bad.”
“...N-No! That’s not true! That happened because of me, you were just caught up in it!”
Because of her? Caught up?
That sounds like more than just being polite. I should ask a bit more.
“What do you mean by ‘it happened because of you’?”
“Um, well… it was something I imagined!”
“…Sorry, what?”
“I mean, you probably won’t believe me, but… I can make things I imagine become real…!”
Make imagination real?
If that’s true, she has an ability like mine.
“When did you become aware of this? Did anything change? Like seeing strange things, hearing voices, etc.?”
“S-Since summer break started. As for changes… not particularly…”
“You said you can make things you imagine become real. How exactly do you do it?”
“Do it…?”
“Like, do you think about it really hard, or press some kind of mental button like in a game?”
“N-No… nothing like that…”
So it's not even something she does intentionally. That makes it sound even more like coincidence.
“Couldn’t it just be a string of coincidences—”
“N-No, I really don’t think so. At first I did think it was just coincidence, but… too many times, things I imagined became real. And not normal things either… Plus, lately the time between imagining and reality is getting shorter… I’m sorry, I’m not explaining well. I’m socially awkward… It’s creepy, isn’t it, saying this to someone I barely know…?”
“No, not at all. I don’t think badly of you.”
“Th-Thank you…”
That said, I still wasn’t sure if I believed her.
The shortening time could mean her ability is improving, like leveling up. But she has no awareness of her power.
(Yeah, best to ask Alicia about this later.)
No point thinking too hard right now.
Just then—
“Sorry, Ikoma-senpai! I’m late—huh?”
The door opened, and Kyouri Kuon entered. Her apology died on her lips as she froze seeing me.
“Uh, sorry for intruding?”
I racked my brain for how to survive what could quickly turn into a disaster.
◇◇◇
“Um, do you two know each other?”
“Yes, we’re classmates and get along well.”
Kyouri responded in her usual angelic mode, while Ikoma-senpai remained visibly anxious.
“…That is, I… with him… ahhh!?”
“W-What’s wrong?”
“I-I’m so sorry! I didn’t even properly introduce myself to the person who saved my life!?”
Come to think of it, we never actually introduced ourselves.
“I-It’s fine. Uh… Kuon-chan, could you wait a moment?
Sorry for the late introduction. My name is Juri Ikoma…! I’m really sorry for being so casual without introducing myself properly…”
“I’m Shuu Iori. No need to apologize. Also, I’m younger than you, so no need for honorifics.”
“I-I couldn’t possibly speak casually to the person who saved my life…”
“Um, what do you mean ‘saved your life’?”
Kyouri looked puzzled, hearing the phrase.
“Well, um… this morning I was surrounded by some thugs, and Iori-san helped me…”
“! Are you okay!? Were either of you hurt!?”
“N-No. Iori-san came right away, so I was fine…”
“I’m not hurt either.”
“That’s good to hear…”
Kyouri visibly relaxed at our words.
“So, why were you with Ikoma-senpai?”
“Oh, your message said, ‘come to the club building if convenient,’ right? But it didn’t say when it started or ended. I was confused, and Ikoma-senpai happened to speak to me. Since I was there, she invited me in.”
Best not to mention anything about “imaginations becoming reality.”
Even if it’s true, we don’t know who’s responsible or what’s really going on.
When I explained, Kyouri took out her phone, checked something, then looked apologetic.
“S-Sorry… I forgot to mention the time…”
It’s understandable given how quickly she wrote that long message.
“It’s fine. What time do you think it’ll end?”
“Um…”
She glanced at Ikoma-senpai, who quickly responded.
“Th-This meeting is just to explain the usual procedures. It should only take about five minutes…”
“Got it. I’ll wait outside then.”
“I’m really sorry…”
“No worries. Thanks for the coffee, Ikoma-senpai.”
“Y-You’re welcome!”
Leaving the room, I opened the chat app. Kana had replied with a simple “Got it.” Alicia hadn’t read my message yet.
(…Whatever, I’ll send another.)
I messaged Alicia again: “Situation changed. Can I call you at 9 PM?”
I finished my coffee and tossed the can in the trash at the entrance.
(…Feels like something big is coming again. Do I attract trouble or something?)
Sighing deeply, I went back inside.
“U-Um, after the midterms… please help us then…”
“Understood. Let me know if there are any specific instructions.”
Looks like the meeting ended.
Ikoma-senpai bowed to Kyouri and rushed out.
“…All done?”
“Yes. She asked for help with the magazine and pamphlet. And said we’re free to do as we like on the day of the festival.”
Kyouri looked satisfied, having secured that freedom.
I, on the other hand, was consumed by guilt.
“S-So that’s good.”
“…Is something wrong? You look uneasy…”
“Eh!? D-Do I really?”
“Yes. Very much so.”
Seems like I’m more expressive when not using my skill. I gave up and confessed.
“…We’ve only been dating for less than a day, and already I was alone with another girl. That feels like betrayal…”
“? Why would that be betrayal?”
“I mean, wouldn’t most people see that and think I’m cheating? Not that I am!”
“Cheating…?”
Kyouri genuinely looked confused.
…Wait a second.
“Kyouri, have you ever read romance manga or watched dramas?”
“No. I was always focused on becoming the head of the Kuon family, so I never touched entertainment like that.”
Seriously?
That explained a lot, but also raised new concerns.
Thinking back, she didn’t have a TV or manga in her room. She seemed sheltered until high school.
And considering the Kuon family’s political marriage tendencies, maybe she really doesn’t know anything about romance.
“I see. I’ll lend you some of my little sister’s romance manga next time.”
“Thank you…?”
Kyouri thanked me, not really understanding. But now that she’s free, she should enjoy life more.
As we walked out of the building, most students had already gone. But just in case, it was time to part ways.
“Well, I’ll go this way. What about tomorrow morning?”
“…If possible, I’d like to walk together again.”
“Alright, same place as today then.”
“Yes!”
We parted, and I headed home—when…
“Hm?”
My phone vibrated. A new message had arrived.
I opened it.
It was a short message from Alicia:
“There’s something I want to ask of you.”
📝 Notes:
-
Ikoma’s Ability: This chapter introduces Juri Ikoma's possible supernatural ability to turn her imagination into reality. However, she has no control over it, nor awareness of how it activates. Her lack of knowledge adds mystery and potential danger.
-
Kyouri’s Innocence: We see a clearer picture of Kyouri’s naiveté regarding romance. Her sheltered upbringing explains her inability to interpret common dating norms.
-
Iori’s Growing Responsibility: Iori finds himself acting as a bridge between normalcy and the supernatural, as well as navigating the emotional needs of two different girls.
-
New Development (Alicia): Alicia's message hints at a possible shift in plot direction or another subplot involving the supernatural.
