Chapter 56 – I Learned About an Urban Legend( Part 3)
Rewinding the clock about ten minutes earlier...
---
"…Nothing's coming up at all."
Back at home, I pulled out my smartphone and immediately searched social media for anything about the suspicious person in the hero suit—but came up with absolutely nothing.
Maybe Alicia’s organization is systematically scrubbing all the rumors, or maybe the people wearing those hero suits are just that good at covering their tracks.
…No, wait. Alicia did say that the video had been uploaded to a video-sharing site and then deleted by the organization she belongs to.
That would make the first option more likely.
---
"Well, not that it really concerns me."
It looked like Alicia’s organization was already moving to handle the matter, so all I had to do was enjoy my summer vacation like usual and avoid doing anything that might make me stand out.
At least, that’s what I should have done.
---
(…Guess I’ll grind some event quests to take my mind off things.)
Just as I forcefully shifted my thoughts and was about to open a game app—
---
"Hey, are you awake?"
A voice called out from beyond the door—my little sister.
---
"Yeah, I’m up."
"Then go buy soy sauce and vinegar from the supermarket. You’re free anyway, right?"
"I mean, I am free, but... Fine. Soy sauce and vinegar, got it."
"Also, you could pick up that ice cream with the red lid if you want. Macadamia nut flavor is fine."
"Buy it with your own allowance."
"Tch."
---
Ignoring Kana’s cheeky antics, I grabbed my phone, wallet, and reusable shopping bag, then headed out.
Normally we’d bicker about who had to go, but I had something I wanted to think over while walking, so I took the task willingly this time.
And that something, of course, was that hero suit.
I’d been told not to do anything reckless, and I wasn’t planning on taking any initiative.
That said, my usually all-powerful skill, Appraisal, had been hard-countered. I couldn’t help but be a little curious—what kind of technology was behind it? Who was using it?
Problem was, I had virtually nothing to base any theories on!
---
(…Come to think of it, they mentioned being granted power by a [Hero-sama] who returned from another world.)
The words “other world” and “hero” inevitably made me think of that day.
That being who claimed to be a god—Ashera. The one who whisked away 25 of my classmates to another world as [Heroes to save the world].
And at the same time, the extraordinary powers I gained—powers that made the world feel like an RPG turned real.
---
(…Could these guys be the same as me?)
---
"…Destroy!"
"…Them… all…!"
As I pondered, I suddenly heard shouting from somewhere nearby.
Reacting instantly, I cast Cognitive Obfuscation Magic on myself, summoned a makeshift crow with Water Magic, and used Sensory Link to see through its eyes as I sent it out.
---
(—Found them!)
Through the crow’s vision, I saw a group of thuggish blond and silver-haired delinquents—likely high schoolers—cornering a junior high kid in a deserted back alley.
---
"C’mon, it’s just 10,000 yen. That’s not too much, right?"
"I-I don’t have that kind of money…!"
"Tch. Useless little punk..."
This wasn’t good.
No one else was around within the crow’s field of vision, and there wasn’t a police box nearby either.
At this rate, that kid was going to get hurt.
---
(…If I do it like usual, there shouldn’t be any problems.)
I amplified the Cognitive Obfuscation Magic on myself to the point that I appeared invisible to others and used Teleportation Magic to silently warp to their location.
---
"If you can’t pay, then at least let us use you as a punching bag! I’m seriously broke right now and it’s pissing me off!"
"Eek!?"
Cringing at their cartoonishly bad attitudes, I silently slipped behind them.
The plan was to knock them out quietly using the same Cognitive Obfuscation Magic, then plant some guilt so they wouldn’t try anything like this again.
But the moment I was about to activate the skill, I noticed something odd about the delinquents.
It was hard to tell in the dim evening light, but their eyes seemed lifeless, and their voices had this weird, forced tone to them.
Could they be—?
---
(Wait, no. I can speculate later. Right now, I need to neutralize them.)
Shaking off the distracting thoughts, I refocused and targeted the thugs with my magic.
---
—Just then, flower petals like cherry blossoms scattered through the air, followed by a shockwave, as if a meteor had crashed nearby.
---
(Great. Another pain in the ass...!)
I mentally cursed as I switched vision back to the crow. But with all the dust and petals swirling, I couldn’t see anything clearly.
---
"Prepare yourselves, scum! In the name of the Holy Hero-sama, I, their loyal retainer, shall deliver divine retribution!"
A muffled voice echoed through the alley.
Turning in the direction of the voice, I saw a figure clad in a suit of armor that looked exactly like the one in the video—except this one was pink.
---
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?"
"I am one of the retainers bestowed with power by the Holy Hero-sama! I will not allow your wicked acts to go unpunished. I shall administer judgment myself!"
"What the hell are you even talking about, you cosplay freak!?"
Apparently ticked off by the response, the silver-haired punk lunged at them.
---
"Futile."
"What the—!? My arm!?"
But just as he swung, vines burst from nowhere and suspended his arm mid-air.
---
"Now, let the cleansing begin. Repent for your sins in the name of justice!"
"Uwaaahhhh!?"
The pink-suited figure summoned beam-like whips from their arms and lashed them toward the delinquents.
---
(…Okay, that’s a bit much, don’t you think!?)
Quickly, I used Cognitive Obfuscation Magic to knock the punks out and Teleportation Magic to move them to a safe location. Then I had a water clone take the hits instead.
---
"Hmph. Pathetic."
Fortunately, the pink hero didn’t realize they were attacking a decoy made from water magic.
More importantly—...
---
"U-Um! Thank you for saving me! But… who exactly are you?"
"…I am one who was granted power by the Holy Hero-sama after returning from another world."
"Hero…sama?"
"The Hero-sama is the savior who gained divine power in another world to save this nation overrun by demons and evil. I am one of their loyal retainers, dedicated to fulfilling their noble vision."
"A… retainer…"
"If you are interested, come to the location written on this letter. You, too, have a heart that loves justice—just like us."
"I—I do?"
"I won't force you. The choice is yours."
I discreetly attached a makeshift tracking device made from Water Magic onto the pink-suited figure’s back.
---
"Farewell then, young one."
They took off, completely unaware of anything I’d done.
---
"If I go to the place on this letter… maybe I can get power like that too—"
(Sorry, but I can’t let you do that.)
As the boy looked on with hopeful eyes, I gently put him to sleep, borrowed the letter he was gripping, and photographed it with my phone.
The sleep spell was shallow—he’d probably wake up in under five minutes. Just in case, I messaged Alicia too, so things should be covered on that front.
---
(…Now then, guess I’ll have a chat with those guys next.)
As a final step, I cast Cognitive Obfuscation Magic on the boy to erase his memory of the past few minutes, and teleported to where the now-slumbering delinquents had been taken.
📝 Translator Notes:
1.「ハリボテ」 (haribote): Literally a papier-mâché dummy or façade; figuratively used here for a decoy target.
2. Hero-sama / 勇者様: Retained with honorific to emphasize cultish reverence.
🧠 Significance & Themes:
Emergence of a cult-like group:
This “Hero and Servants” faction mimics the aesthetic and language of justice-loving tokusatsu heroes but operates like a fanatic cult. Their speech and magical technology raise questions about their origin—possibly otherworldly like the protagonist.
Moral ambiguity of vigilante justice:
The pink hero goes overboard with her “cleansing,” suggesting her ideals of justice are extreme or misguided. This introduces potential antagonists who aren’t evil—but righteous to a dangerous degree.
