The Mage Guild sat right across the street from Dolan’s shop. Most of the other guilds in Gomena seemed to be gathered along this same road.
Mario confidently pushed open the front doors and stepped inside, glancing back to see Tenma hesitating at the threshold. Alf gave Tenma a gentle push to get him moving.
Once inside, Mario approached the front counter and declared:
"We’re here to see the Dean. We also need access to the training grounds. Oh—and let him know we’ve brought a ‘mage.’”
“A... mage?” The receptionist blinked, hesitating for a second before bowing. “Understood. I’ll fetch the Dean immediately. We’ll have the training grounds prepared—please let us know when you're ready.”
She quickly disappeared into the back.
Before long, rhythmic thump-thump-thumps echoed down the hall. An elderly man hobbled into view, one hand rubbing his backside, the other gripping a gnarled staff. The receptionist trailed behind, visibly trying to hold back laughter.
Tenma stifled a chuckle—looked like the old man had taken a tumble. Mario's shoulders were shaking, and Leaf actually let out a "Pfft!"
“I am Io Gandalf, Dean of the Gomena branch of the Mage Guild,” the old man announced with a groan. “Mario, did you seriously bring a ‘mage’? You’d better not be playing a prank—swear it on your staff.”
“By my staff, Master. I swear. He even has an Adventurers’ Guild card. Tenma, show him.”
At Mario’s prompting, Tenma handed over his card. Io scrutinized both sides, his expression shifting slightly.
“Tenma, is it? F-rank... and listed as a ‘Magic Swordsman.’ Interesting. Magic attributes: Water and... ‘Daily Life’? What the devil is that supposed to be?”
“Master, the one I saw was a spell called ‘Clean.’ It’s a keyword-activated magic that removes stains and odors. Even got rid of the stench of goblin blood.”
“Wha—?! Incredible! What else does this so-called ‘Daily Life’ magic do?”
As he handed the card back, Mario answered in Tenma’s place—clearly odor-removal was a big deal here.
“He can also use ‘Dry’ and ‘Create Water.’ Beyond that… we're not sure yet.”
Tenma nodded. There were probably other spells—like Light or even a way to start fires—but he hadn’t tested them yet. Better to be honest.
“I see. What about your Water Magic?”
“I can use Water Cutter, Water Bullet, Water Ball, and Water Wall, probably.”
“Good. Show me in the training grounds. Mario, you're coming too.”
“May we have observers?”
“Of course. This way.”
Io led them deeper into the building, stopping at a staircase.
“You—downstairs. The rest of you, head with Mario to the spectator gallery.”
The Test Begins
The stairs opened into a large, arena-like space illuminated by enchanted lamps. It was two stories tall and expansive. Tenma felt sudden bursts of wind from various directions—probably some kind of detection magic.
In the gallery above, robed mages buzzed with interest. Leaf was waving at him cheerfully. Alf, not so much.
Io raised his staff, and the mages quieted instantly.
“First, demonstrate your ‘Daily Life’ magic. Clean that.”
He pointed to a bundle of filthy leather armor and robes piled on the floor.
“A client requested deodorizing, but the stench was too much for even us. Thought we’d leave it to you.”
Tenma smirked inwardly. So they’re dumping their problem job on me, huh?
“May I choose the spell order?”
“As you like.”
Tenma focused and cast:
“Create Water. Clean. Dry.”
Water gushed from thin air, soaking the armor. A soft glow enveloped it, and the next instant, it was not only spotless but completely dry.
“Done.”
Io approached and gave the gear a sniff, then examined it thoroughly.
“Marvelous! Not even a trace of filth or odor—and the inside is dry as a bone. That glow just now... Tenma, what element would you say your magic has?”
“I thought it was ‘None.’ Was I mistaken?”
“‘None,’ perhaps... or ‘Light’? Hm. Needs further analysis.”
Tenma caught the mumbling and glared at him, but the Dean ignored it.
“Next: Rock Wall!”
A massive stone wall burst forth—a two-meter square, fifty centimeters thick. The spell had no chant. Instant cast? This old man’s not to be underestimated.
“Strike it with your Water Magic.”
Tenma unleashed a flurry:
“Water Ball. Water Bullet. Water Cutter!”
The orb cratered the wall. The bullets punched straight through. The blade sliced it like paper.
“Unbelievable! Since when is Water Magic this destructive?! Is the boy just gifted, or have mages been underestimating it all this time? Hah. Something else to research.”
“Final test. Block my magic. Don’t worry—this ring will protect you from any fatal damage.”
He tossed Tenma a silver ring. A Ring of Protection?
“Fire Ball!”
A blazing inferno roared toward Tenma. In a split-second, he crouched and yelled:
“Water Wall!”
A slanted water barrier burst up, redirecting the fireball skyward. It exploded harmlessly against the ceiling, absorbed by the arena’s barrier magic—Mario explained it to him afterward.
“Ohh! You redirected rather than resisted? Clever thinking. Well done! Welcome to the Mage Guild, boy!”
“Wait, I never said I was joining! I don’t even know what this guild does.”
“Eh? I figured that was obvious. Well, doesn’t matter. You've passed. Let's talk upstairs.”
Guild Benefits
Back in the lobby, Alf, Leaf, and the receptionist were waiting. They were soon led into a meeting room where a young man, Ern—the guild's secretary—served tea and explained:
-
The Mage Guild and the Church were the only institutions where magic could be formally studied.
-
Membership granted access to Grimoires, mentorship, magical research labs, and enchanted gear at a discounted rate.
-
Magic Arms (e.g., flaming swords) responded actively to the user's will, while Magic Tools (like storage pouches) were passive.
-
Even non-mages could join for a fee—10 small silver coins for C-rank adventurers, 1 for B-rank and above—primarily to access enchanted goods at 60% market price.
When Tenma agreed to register, Ern processed his guild card—but suddenly froze.
“Tenma... can you use any other elements besides water?”
“No. Never have.”
It was a lie.
The truth revealed itself when he saw his updated card:
『Mage Guild – Rank: Sage』
Translator's Notes (T/N):
-
魔装具 (masougu) – "Magic Arms": enchanted weapons that respond to intent (active).
-
魔道具 (madougu) – "Magic Tools": enchanted gear with passive effects (e.g., bags, lamps).
-
詠唱破棄 (eishou haki) – "Chant omission": casting spells without reciting incantations, indicating mastery.
-
賢者 (kenja) – "Sage": a prestigious title, far above what a new recruit should have. Suggests Tenma’s hidden potential or extraordinary affinity.
-
生活魔法 (seikatsu mahou) – "Daily Life Magic": simple, practical spells rarely respected, though potentially very useful.
