After leaving Marni’s shop, Alf led the group not to the Adventurers’ Guild, but to an unmarked building behind it. Without hesitation, Leaf and Mario followed. Tenma trailed after them.
Inside, the building revealed itself to be a weapons shop. The right-hand shelf was lined with swords in neat rows, while a wicker basket near the entrance overflowed with blades haphazardly thrust into it. Spears and bows hung from the walls. On the left side, shields of various shapes were stacked, and mannequins along the perimeter wore sets of armor and robes. In front of the back counter, a longsword and a spear were displayed prominently, with a mannequin in plate armor looming beside them.
“Tenma, I’ll introduce you to the owner. You guys go ahead and browse.”
“Got it. I’ll check out the bows.”
“I’ll look at shortswords and daggers.”
Alf called out toward the back room behind the counter and brought Tenma along. A stocky man with a thick beard soon emerged.
“Hey, Dolan. Still grumpy as ever? If you don’t hire a clerk, your stuff’s gonna get stolen, y’know.”
“Let it. What’s on display is mostly junk to me anyway.”
“That’s by dwarf standards. For regular folks, this stuff’s more than good enough. Anyway, this is Tenma. We came to get him outfitted—got anything decent?”
Dolan gave Tenma a quick once-over.
“Hmph. Scrawny. You swing a greatsword? War axe? Got war hammers, too.”
“Don’t screw around. He uses a longsword—two-handed. Backup’s a shortsword. Leather armor’s fine—he needs to gear up alone. Get gloves, vambraces, a sword belt. Pick the good stuff. He’ll decide from there.”
Alf rattled off the requirements with practiced precision. Dolan squinted at Tenma again.
“You’re pretty fond of this kid, huh?”
Without waiting for a reply, he disappeared into the back.
“Tenma, I might be deciding a lot here, but trust me—I won’t pick crap for you.”
Tenma nodded silently. There wasn’t anything to argue with.
Dolan returned, arms full—two sword belts, three longswords, and three shortswords. He dumped them on the counter and vanished again.
“Tenma, start with the belt. Think about how it works with Marni’s magic pouch. After that, draw and test the swords.”
Following Alf’s instruction, Tenma retrieved the magic pouch from Subspace Storage and checked that both belts could thread through its loops. He mentioned wanting something that’d match the armor, and Alf nodded in agreement.
Tenma attached the pouch to one belt, hooked on a longsword, and tried it on. Each sword had slight differences in weight and balance, but after testing all three, he settled on the one that felt right. He did the same for the shortswords.
Dolan came back carrying a set of leather armor. Alf checked it over and handed two longswords, two shortswords, and one belt back, which Dolan took without comment.
The leather armor had detachable shoulder guards and a cuirass designed to be pulled over the head. Straps at the sides and shoulders tightened it snugly. The front and back plates were connected at the sides, leaving a fist-sized gap under each armpit. The front reached just below the navel, the back stopped just above the waist—allowing for full range of motion. The segmented shoulder plates added mobility.
With Alf’s guidance, Tenma tried it on, tested drawing his blade, and rolled his shoulders. It felt solid, yet didn’t restrict movement.
Dolan then brought gloves and vambraces. The gloves dulled fine finger movement, so the vambraces had extra-wide straps for easy fastening—something Tenma noticed immediately upon trying them.
After a moment, Tenma spoke up:
“Do you have fingerless gloves?”
Dolan grunted and went back inside. When he returned, he held out a pair of fingerless gloves with matching vambraces. This new set had slimmer straps and covered only up to the wrist—much more Tenma’s style.
He exchanged the old gear for the new and placed everything on the counter.
“This good?” Dolan asked gruffly.
Alf stepped in.
“What’s the total? Break it down, too.”
“Tch. What a pain. Belt’s 5 copper. Longsword: 35. Shortsword: 27. Leather armor: 50. Gloves: 10. Vambraces: 35. Total: 162 copper. You gonna pay?”
Tenma tilted his head.
“Mr. Dolan, are these items enchanted?”
“Nope. If you want enchantments, go to a damn mage. My gear doesn’t need ‘em—it holds up just fine on its own. That’s what I’m proud of.”
“He’s right,” Alf added. “This stuff competes with enchanted gear. But hey, don’t think that means he can enchant things.”
From the way they talked, Tenma guessed Dolan—or maybe dwarves as a race—didn’t dabble in enchantments.
“Mr. Dolan, do you have extras of the longsword, short sword, armor, and vambraces?”
Both Dolan and Alf furrowed their brows.
“Got some. Why?”
“I’d like two more longswords, two short swords, another set of armor, and vambraces, please.”
“I’ll sell ‘em, but if this is for resale, I’m not doing it.”
“It’s not. I promise. It’s for me.”
“Swear it on your sword?”
“I swear.”
Alf cut in, concerned.
“Tenma, you sure? That’s a lot.”
“I’m fine.”
Tenma pulled out four small silver coins—worth 400 copper—and paid. The full list included:
-
1 sword belt
-
3 longswords
-
3 short swords
-
2 leather armors
-
1 gloves
-
2 vambraces
(Total: 371 copper. Dolan gave 30 copper in change.)
(Note: As with the clothing store earlier, none of the Orochi members bought anything.)
Before they left, Alf had Tenma attach a short sword to his belt—just in case. Thinking back, Tenma realized something: while the Orochi members wore no armor, Alf always carried a sword. Leaf had her bow and quiver, and Mario held a staff.
When Tenma asked why, Alf explained:
“Adventurers are basically vigilantes. We see trouble, we’re supposed to step in. So carrying weapons is just part of the job.”
Later, Mario elaborated further: adventurers and mercenaries function as a sort of civilian militia, which is why they’re expected—if not legally required—to carry arms and intervene in crimes.
Translator’s Notes (T/N):
-
得物 (emono) – Lit. “weapon one is skilled with” or “preferred weapon.” Dolan is sizing up Tenma’s combat style.
-
付与 (fuyo) – Refers to “enchantments” or magical augmentation. Dolan makes clear his gear relies on craftsmanship, not magic.
-
通貨 (currency): 1 small silver coin = 100 copper coins. This chapter clarifies economic value and exchange.
-
ドワーフ (dwarf) – Rendered as “dwarf” to keep the standard fantasy terminology. Their pride in craftsmanship is a common trope.
