Upon leaving the Adventurers' Guild, Alf casually announced their next destination.
“So, shall we head to the inn? If Leaf isn’t here, that means that’s what’s going on, right, Mario?”
“Yes. Leaf went ahead to secure the rooms. Since we haven’t heard from her, it’s safe to assume she managed to get our usual spot.”
“Tenma, today calls for a celebration. It’s your debut as an adventurer. Come on.”
“Shall we go, Tenma-kun?”
Swept along by the energy of the two, Tenma followed them out of the Adventurers’ Guild.
Once they reached the main road, Alf took the lead, striding forward without hesitation. After a bit, he made a right turn. When he saw that Mario and Tenma had caught up, he opened a door and stepped inside.
“The Serpent’s Nest”
—So read the sign hanging above the entrance Alf had just passed through.
Tenma looked up at the nameplate and found himself oddly convinced.
“Yeah... that checks out.”
Something about it just made sense.
Noticing his reaction, Mario chuckled.
“This place is run by one of Alf’s relatives. The ground floor is a tavern-slash-dining hall, and the upper floors are the inn. It’s our regular spot whenever we come to Gomena. Fitting, don’t you think?”
Saying that, Mario held the door open for Tenma.
Inside, the space was bright and clean. The floors were made of pale wooden planks, while the lower parts of the walls were painted a deep crimson. The upper walls and ceiling were whitewashed, and the furniture, counter, and even the staircase were all coordinated in matching crimson hues.
Lamps were evenly spaced along the walls, and glowing orbs floated from the ceiling.
Tenma looked up at the floating light orbs.
“Are those magic, too?”
“They’re powered by magic tools. See that black cylinder in the center of the room, at about the same height as the tables? That’s where the tool is housed. It channels light to both the ceiling orbs and the wall lamps.”
Mario helpfully answered Tenma’s question.
“Magic tools, huh? That’s pretty convenient.”
“First time seeing one? You really are from the countryside, huh, Tenma-kun.”
As Tenma continued marveling at the tools, Mario gave him a slightly amused look.
Just then, a voice called out from behind the counter.
“Mario. Tenma. Over here.”
It was Alf. He waved them over, and both Mario and Tenma headed toward him.
“You’re both so sloooow. Making a cute girl like me wait this long? Unforgivable. Well, I’ll forgive Tenma-kun. But you, Mario? You owe me a drink.”
Leaf was already there at the counter.
“Alf and Mario will share a room. Same one as always. Tenma-kun, you’re in Room 6. Freshen up and then come back down. I’ve got us a table.”
“Got it, Leaf. Tenma, your room’s on the second floor. We’ll head up together partway.”
Alf caught the key Leaf tossed and then tossed another toward Tenma, who caught it neatly and followed Alf toward the stairs.
They parted ways on the second floor — Alf’s room was apparently on the third. Tenma unlocked Room 6 and stepped inside.
As soon as he entered, the room lit up automatically. A glowing orb floated in the center of the ceiling.
Inside were a bed and a wardrobe. A set of sleepwear was laid neatly on the bed.
There was also another door on the left wall, apart from the entrance. When he opened it, he found a wooden bath barrel, a water bucket, and two taps with handles — one red, one blue.
He turned the red one and hot water came out — surprisingly hot, too.
“This is a magic tool too? Aren’t baths supposed to be one of the biggest inconveniences in another world? Is this normal here? How does it even work?”
Tenma began filling the bath barrel, and while waiting, he glanced at the rest of the room — and spotted something familiar.
A ceramic toilet. A Western-style one, with a separate tank. There was even paper prepared.
“Okay, this has to be the work of another person from Earth. No way this is a coincidence.”
Back in the main room, he opened the wardrobe. Inside was a hanger rack and several hangers. One of them even held a small towel. He hung up his half-coat, took the towel — roughly the size of a sports towel — and used “Appraise” on it. It showed up as a fabric similar to cotton.
“Guess I just don’t know enough. Oh well.”
Towel in hand, Tenma headed to the bath. Once it was full, he turned off the water, placed his clothes in a wicker laundry basket beside the door, and sank into the warm tub.
After soaking for a while, he removed the wooden drain plug at the bottom of the tub.
While the water drained, he cast 《Dry》 to evaporate the moisture from his skin, then put on the clothes he had cleaned earlier with 《Cleanse》.
There was no mirror in the room, which he found mildly inconvenient, but he exited anyway, locked the door behind him, and headed back downstairs.
