"Yeah, around here it is. But apparently, in some other country, our hair color is considered rare,"

Alf said, continuing his explanation.

"Well, it's just unusual, that's all. The point is—
Tenma, you stand out. Once we get into Gomena and drop Marnie off at his shop, we’re heading to the Adventurers’ Guild. You’ll register there and get ranked up to F. That includes me verifying your solo monster subjugation.

There’s no way someone like you won’t attract attention. And if you're walking around with a magic-iron sword? You’ll draw the wrong kind of attention. So, I’m giving you my spare weapon.

And tonight, you stick with us. Got it?"**

Despite his gruff tone, Alf was clearly concerned for Tenma’s safety.

"If it's not a bother, then... I’d appreciate it."

Though they'd only known each other for half a day, Tenma felt he could trust Alf and the members of Orochi. That made Alf’s offer all the more welcome.

"Then tomorrow, first thing, we’re getting you clothes and shoes. After that, we’ll stop by a weapons shop, then an armor shop. And after that... the Sorcerers' Guild? Mario?"

"Yes. Ideally, we’d go to the Sorcerers' Guild first. But given Tenma-kun’s current outfit, your order works better."

Tenma’s schedule for tomorrow was now set.
Thanks to Alf’s explanation, he understood the risk of carrying a magic-iron sword around in public. He’d already planned on buying a more appropriate weapon. Having Orochi with him was reassuring.

As for visiting the Sorcerers' Guild...

Well, guess I’ve got no choice.

"Thank you. I’m in your care."

While they chatted, the city gates came into view.

Several carriages and travelers were lined up ahead. The carriages passed through almost without incident. "Almost"—because each one still had to stop briefly for the guards to check something before being waved through.

Among the crowd were people dressed like adventurers, travelers with backpacks or large bags—various types. Most were allowed in without trouble. About one in ten, however, were pulled aside and led behind the gate. A while later, they returned and were allowed entry.

As Tenma watched, their turn came.

Three guards approached. One stood in front of the wagon. The other two came toward the driver’s bench.

"Where are you coming from?"

"From the capital city, Valz. We're adventurers hired to escort a merchant,"
Mario answered, pulling out some kind of identification card and showing it to the guard.

Alf stuck his head out from the back and showed his own ID and a parchment. Behind the wagon, Marnie answered a similar set of questions.

Then, one of the guards pointed toward Tenma.

"You with the black hair—show your identification."

"Identification? I... don’t have any."

"You don’t have one?"
The guard’s tone grew sharp.

Alf quickly stepped in.

"This one’s Tenma. We picked him up during our journey. I, Alf, B-rank adventurer and leader of Orochi, vouch for him. Our mage has already confirmed his identity. If you’re still not sure, you can verify it yourselves."

"That’s right. I used Lie Detection on him. We’ve confirmed his name, and that he’s not a criminal,"
Mario added.

Tenma thought back—
When did that happen?
—And realized it must have been when he first met Mario.

But he didn’t feel upset. At the time, it had made sense. It was a reasonable precaution.

The guards seemed satisfied with Alf and Mario’s answers.

"Alright. That’s five people—1 copper coin. One medium copper for the carriage. Another copper for the cargo. Total comes to 2 copper coins and 1 medium copper. Who’s paying? Or are you splitting the cost?"

"I’ll cover it,"
Alf said, handing over the coins.

The guard accepted the payment and signaled to the man in front. That guard stepped aside, and Mario gave the reins a light flick.

The wagon rolled forward, entering the city.

Tenma’s eyes sparkled.

My first time seeing a city in another world...!
