Chapter: The Move
Spring break had arrived.
Kenta and the others had graduated high school and were busy preparing to move to Tokyo.
First, my mother and her friends were moving from Tokyo to our town.
In the morning, movers would load up all the boxes from the Tokyo house onto the truck.
Then, by the next morning, they’d unload everything into the house next to mine.
Once my mother’s move-in was complete, the movers would head over to the Nakamori residence that same afternoon to load up Kenta’s things.
After that, the truck would drive straight back to Tokyo.
Efficient—no empty return trip.
According to my sister Mizuho, Mom had even managed to negotiate a discount on the moving fee because the truck wouldn’t be returning empty.
Kenta said he was grateful too—thanks to my mom’s negotiation, he didn’t have to make any complicated arrangements himself, and it saved him quite a bit of money.
Mom’s group planned to finish loading their things in the morning, take the train here, and then grab a taxi to our house.
They’d stay with me for the night, and the next morning, their moving truck would arrive to unload.
This time, Mom had actually called ahead to tell me.
And she’d sent me a shopping list by email.
Apparently, she was cooking dinner tonight.
So I hopped on my bike and rode off to the supermarket for groceries.
When I got back, Mom and Mizuho had just arrived.
Dinner that evening was soba topped with crispy vegetable tempura.
It had been a while since the three of us ate together. We chatted as we ate, and the familiar warmth of home settled around the table.
The next morning, Mizuho came barging into my room.
“Big bro! You said you’d practice archery with me! Come on, get up already!”
She puffed out her cheeks. “I can’t even get into the back-hill dungeon without you!”
Even though it was spring break, she had me up at the crack of dawn.
With no choice, I got dressed and took her to the hill behind our house—the entrance to the small dungeon.
Amber opened the gate for us.
I handed Mizuho the waist-pouch–type storage bag Bach had prepared. Misuzu and I had talked about giving it to her earlier.
“Everything’s inside—your gear, and your bow,” I told her. “Make sure you thank Misuzu properly later.”
“Got it!” she said brightly.
“The magic scrolls aren’t in there,” I added. “Misuzu wants to explain them to you first.”
Mizuho pulled the bow from the pouch, eyes wide with excitement.
“Thanks to my job class, I think I can sort of tell how to use this!”
She nocked an arrow—or rather, she tried to. A moment later, a shimmering magical arrow materialized by itself.
“Whoa…”
Her first few shots missed, but by the fifth and sixth slime, her aim had improved dramatically.
Then—thwip!—her final shot struck true, piercing a slime cleanly through its core.
“I did it, big bro!” she cried, grinning ear to ear.
I couldn’t help but smile. Seeing her that happy made the early morning worth it.
I turned to Amber. “From now on, Mizuho will be coming here every morning to hunt slimes. When she shows up, could you open the dungeon gate for her?”
Amber nodded earnestly.
“Alright! Time to go back and try on my gear!”
“Mizuho, you know you can’t officially explore dungeons until you’re registered as an adventurer, right?”
“I know, I know!” she said, pouting slightly. “But I saw Misuzu’s outfit and thought it looked so cool! I just wanna try mine on and check it in the mirror!”
“I see…”
She really was excited.
There wasn’t any real need for her to put it on today, but it was her gear—she could do what she liked.
After breakfast, the moving truck finally arrived.
Thinking I might be able to help, I went next door.
…but the movers were already handling everything.
Mom gave me a look and said, “You’ll just be in the way, dear.”
So I shrugged and went back home to kill time.
By late morning, the sound of the moving truck rumbling away signaled that the move was done.
After lunch—Mom’s home-cooked meal, of course—I grabbed my bike and headed to the Nakamori residence.
Together with Misuzu, I saw Kenta off as he set out on his journey to Tokyo.
