Chapter: Clearing the Dungeon’s Eighth Floor
We finished exploring the eighth underground floor of the dungeon. After defeating the mantis-type monster, we returned via Bach’s transfer gate to the wide chamber where Kuromitsu-chan awaited us.
“Kuromitsu-chan, once we’re outside, I’ll summon you again, so please hang in there!” Misuzu-san said.
Kuromitsu bowed her head, and Misuzu-san smiled as she patted it.
“Then, I shall now open the gate to the surface,” Bach announced.
A ripple of magic filled the air, and a glowing portal appeared before us.
We stepped through—and emerged before a rock jutting about a meter out of the ground.
Misuzu-san summoned Kuromitsu-chan once more. A magic circle appeared, and Kuromitsu materialized in a shimmer of light.
I turned to the spirits. “Is there anything left?”
They all shook their heads.
“Misuzu-san, looks like there’s nothing else on this floor,” I reported.
“Then how about we call it a day and head back?” she replied.
We decided to push on just a little further—to reach the entrance to the ninth floor. That way, if we reached it, Bach’s gate could take us straight there next time.
“Kuromitsu-chan, please,” Misuzu-san said.
Kuromitsu turned her back toward us, and we climbed onto her. Once we were all aboard, she rose gracefully into the air.
Kuromitsu flew gently through the sky. The reddish-brown land stretched endlessly below.
After a while, we spotted a patch of land with some sparse grass… and a large herd of demonic cattle grazing there.
Wait—those people over there…
“Misuzu-san, aren’t those Kenta-san and the others?” I pointed.
Misuzu-san leaned forward, peering down. “You’re right! It’s Onii-chan and the others!”
“Kuromitsu-chan, circle overhead for a bit!” she called out.
Kuromitsu banked away, gliding in wide loops to keep from startling the herd. She was being careful not to disturb their hunt.
As expected of Kuromitsu-chan—she was truly clever.
Curious about how Kenta-san and his party hunted, I decided to watch from our special-seat vantage point in the sky.
Down below, the hunters crouched low, creeping closer to the herd.
One member raised a Western-style bow, aiming at a bull on the outskirts of the group.
The arrow flew, striking the demon bull squarely in the rump.
Was its rear end hurting? The creature bellowed and slowly turned its head around in irritation.
That’s when one of the members stood up and shouted, drawing its attention.
The enraged bull charged. Ah, so that’s their tactic—separate a single one from the herd by provoking it.
The member being chased by the demon ox leapt aside at the last second. The bull barreled forward—and its front legs plunged into a pitfall!
It struggled desperately to stand up, but with its forelegs trapped, it couldn’t rise.
That’s when Kenta-san burst from hiding and unleashed a flurry of punches into its massive body.
After several heavy blows, the demon bull shimmered and dissolved into particles of light.
It looked like they had safely defeated it, much to my relief.
Kuromitsu-chan landed softly a short distance away, careful not to agitate the remaining herd.
“Onii-chan! I’m glad you defeated the demon ox safely!” Misuzu-san called out.
“Huh? Misuzu? What are you doing here?” Kenta-san asked, blinking up at us.
“We just finished exploring the eighth floor, and Takuya-san and I were heading back,” she said.
“I see. Then go on ahead. We’re going to hunt a bit longer,” he replied.
“Okay. Oh—wait, Onii-chan! We found something good!”
“Something good?” he tilted his head.
“Takuya-san and I talked about it, and we decided to give this to you! Here you go!” Misuzu-san said, holding something out.
He accepted it. “Gloves?”
“Yup! They boost attack power! Please use them!” she said cheerfully.
“Oh! Thanks! I’ll put them to good use right away,” Kenta-san said with a grin.
After parting ways with Kenta-san’s group, we reached the entrance to the dungeon’s eighth floor.
“Misuzu-sama, Takuya-sama,” Bach said, “I shall open the gate so that we may return first.”
Then he turned to Aria. “Aria. You heard the plan earlier, yes?”
“Yes, Lord Bach,” Aria replied, bowing her head.
“I will accompany Misuzu-sama and the others back. You, however, are to proceed to the entrance of the ninth underground floor, prepare a transfer gate there, and then return.”
“Understood,” Aria answered promptly.
Bach was an Earl-class demon, while Aria was a Baron-class demon. Perhaps it was their ranks, or simply the butler-and-maid hierarchy, but Bach clearly outranked her.
“Now then, I shall open the transfer gate to the Sky Castle.”
With that, he invoked his magic, and a shimmering doorway of light appeared.
We stepped through the gate created by Bach—and in the blink of an eye, we were back within the Sky Castle once more.
