Chapter 2 – The Great Demon Lord Gains a Loyal Servant
I—Souichirou Sano—had died of a heart attack.
And when I opened my eyes again, I’d somehow been reincarnated as the Maou—the Demon King—in the world of Mythologia, a classic RPG I’d once played to exhaustion.
It’s a ridiculous situation, really. I died, got reincarnated, and ended up as the final boss.
A normal person would probably be confused or panicked.
Me? My heart was pounding with excitement.
After all, this is my second chance.
For someone destined to be a final boss, being reborn as a Great Demon Lord is like winning the cosmic lottery. No regrets about my past life, no fear for the future. Tremble, humans. A new era of terror under this Great Demon Lord begins now!
“Uh… M-Maou-sama?”
As I sat grinning on my throne, lost in dark fantasies, a maid called out anxiously.
Right. Getting too deep into evil scheming is one of my bad habits.
“It is Great Demon Lord. Address me properly.”
“Y-yes! Forgive me, G-Great Demon Lord-sama!”
I nodded solemnly. I’d lived my last life in modern Japan—being served like this was new to me. But I’d simulated this moment countless times in my head. I could act like a king in my sleep.
Dignity is life itself for a final boss.
To lose it is to be defeated—and I don’t intend to lose to anyone. Therefore, my dignity shall never fade.
Only one problem remained: I had no idea what was going on.
This was clearly the world of Mythologia III, or one very much like it. But that game was told from the Hero’s perspective, so the demon side barely got any screen time. I didn’t even know where I was in the story’s timeline—or what the current state of the Demon Realm was.
Well, names first. That’s the basis of communication.
“Maid. My loyal servant. What is your name?”
“Y-yes! My name is Selen, descendant of the succubi.”
The maid—Selen—curtsied gracefully, her melancholy beauty only emphasizing her allure.
Succubus… so that kind of dream demon, huh? No wonder she’s so… alluring.
“Selen, my vassal. I have questions for you.”
“Y-yes, Great Demon Lord-sama. Ask me anything.”
“Good. First, where are we? I assume this is my castle?”
“Yes. This is the Demon King’s Castle of Coreheim in the Demon Realm. It was built by the previous Demon King. Now the demon army lies in ruins, and the castle has fallen into decay… because of my own inadequacy.”
“...It is not your fault.”
Two important things became clear. First, this takes place before the events of Mythologia III. Second, the Demon Realm is currently in a state of civil war.
In the game’s prologue, the demon army’s revival triggers the story. But here, the army hasn’t even reformed—the Demon King (me) has just awoken.
The castle itself was in disrepair—holes in the walls and windows, old and new battle scars alike. Clearly, many factions have fought over this place, but none managed to rule it. A world of chaos and fractured power.
This deduction method, by the way, is something I call “Final Boss Logic.” A true final boss must understand everything at a glance. You never see a final boss asking for explanations twice, do you?
And from the state of the throne room, I could also tell who had been guarding it—someone who had protected it alone for a long time.
“You’ve done well, Selen. You’ve guarded this throne faithfully until my awakening.”
“Eh?”
She blinked, as if unable to believe my words. Of course. No one had ever thanked her before.
That ends now. Reward and punishment—those are the foundation of any lasting rule. For a hundred years, Selen had stayed here, defending the empty castle as other factions battled over it. Her devotion deserved recognition.
“I know of your loyalty, your devotion, and your sincerity. You are truly my faithful retainer.”
“G-Great Demon Lord-sama…”
Her voice trembled, her face crumpling as tears welled up in her eyes.
“Do not be ashamed. A ruler must cherish loyal servants. To honor those who serve is only natural.”
“S-such… such kindness…! Even if I were to be reborn seven times over, I would never forget your words!”
She was weeping openly now, overwhelmed by gratitude. My Final Boss-Style Emotional Mastery worked perfectly. She was now completely loyal.
“Now then, Selen. I have just awakened and know little. Tell me what you know.”
“Y-yes, Great Demon Lord-sama.”
From her, I learned much. The world was a massive cone divided into three realms: the Heavens at the top, the Human Realm in the middle, and the Demon Realm at the bottom, home to monsters and demons.
A hundred years ago, the demons lost a great war against humanity. The previous Demon King was slain by a Hero, and the Demon Realm fell into chaos. Now, countless warlords fought for power, with even humans occupying key territories.
In short, the perfect setting for a Great Demon King’s rise.
My goal was now clear.
First, I would unify the Demon Realm. Then, rebuild the Demon Army stronger than ever. And finally, defeat the Hero of Fate himself—becoming the one and only true Final Boss.
Perhaps I was reincarnated for this very purpose.
“You have all suffered greatly in my absence,” I said solemnly. “Forgive me for my late awakening.”
“Th-that’s not—! We are unworthy of such words! But… how do you know so much already…?”
“I am the Great Demon Lord. Do not compare me with ordinary beings. I hear one thing and understand a hundred.”
“A-amazing! Truly, you are our one true king! The false lords will kneel before you!”
Her eyes shone with pure faith. And why wouldn’t they? After all, I am the Final Boss.
“Good. Watch closely, Selen. I shall unite the Demon Realm and make all demonkind kneel before me!”
And thus, I declared my ambition aloud. First the Demon Realm, then the Human Realm, and at last—the Heavens. The journey of the Great Demon Lord begins here.
Side: Selen
Just now, the Great Demon Lord-sama said, “I shall make all demonkind my subjects.”
To others, that might seem unremarkable.
But to me—it was salvation.
In this realm, only the strong thrive while the weak perish. Yet the Great Demon Lord declared that he would rule over all demons—strong or weak alike. He would not abandon anyone.
Ahh… what a magnificent being…! Until now, every Demon King sought only conquest, never mercy. But this one—my Great Demon Lord—is different.
He saved me. With a single word, he repaid my hundred years of suffering. My mother’s devotion, my own despair—it all gained meaning in that moment.
For generations, my kind—the dream demons—fed on the dreams of the sleeping Demon King, sustaining him until his awakening. Even as others mocked us and abandoned the crumbling castle, my mother and I stayed.
She passed away fifty years ago, telling me to live freely… but I couldn’t leave. And now, after a century of waiting—he finally awoke.
And he thanked me.
Ahh… Great Demon Lord-sama… my savior… my one true king…
This Selen swears eternal loyalty to you. If you command it, I shall give you my life. If you command me to die, I shall do so.
So please—please—keep me by your side… forever.
