Chapter : Kilsas’s Strength
“There’s no need for that.”
A raspy voice echoed from above.
Everyone tilted their heads back. Floating in the air was an old man clad in deep violet robes. Two crimson horns jutted from his forehead—enough for Asrom and the others to know at once. This was Zeldia of the Six Demon Stars.
“Where is Asrom?”
Zeldia’s golden eyes swept over the adventurers.
“I’m Asrom.”
Stepping forward, Asrom met his gaze head-on.
“…So it’s you.”
Zeldia narrowed his golden eyes to thin, piercing slits.
“Hmm. A formidable one indeed. You’ll make good use.”
“Good use?”
“Your corpse, of course. The body of a Hero of Twelve will make excellent material.”
“So, you intend to kill me.”
“Do you have any objections?”
“None at all. I was thinking of killing you myself.”
Asrom tightened his grip on the Seven-Colored Sword of Radiance.
“And where are your subordinates?”
“They’ll be along shortly.”
“…So for now, you’re alone.”
“Indeed. A being like me has no need of guards.”
“In that case, why don’t you come down already?”
That came from Sylphiel, her silver twin-tails swaying as she raised her weapon.
“I’ll be the one to kill you.”
“…And who might you be?”
“I am Sylphiel of the Moonlight Brigade—one of the Twelve Heroes, like Asrom.”
“…So another Hero of Twelve stands here.”
“That’s right. Don’t tell me you’re thinking of running now?”
Sylphiel smirked, eyes gleaming.
“After all, I already killed one of your lackeys—Dagruud.”
“Dagruud…”
Zeldia’s eyes narrowed further, pupils slitting like a beast’s.
“So you’re the one who slew him.”
“Along with two others, yes.”
“Impressive. Dagruud was one of my stronger subordinates. Perhaps the Twelve Heroes are stronger than I anticipated.”
“If you’re that worried, you can just stay floating up there until your men arrive.”
“…A taunt? Very well. Allow me to teach you fear.”
Zeldia drifted down slowly, alighting on the earth.
“Surround him!”
At Asrom’s command, the Divine Tree Brigade surged forward. Moments later, the Moonlight Brigade and Holy Sword Brigade followed.
Zeldia only stood with his frail arms hanging loosely at his sides, and Kilsas couldn’t help but grin.
Heh. Look at him—just an old man now. His limbs are so thin I could snap them with a single blow. A Six Demon Star he may be, but his prime is long gone. If I play this right, I can kill him myself.
Kilsas’s throat bobbed with anticipation.
So far, only Rimucera among the Twelve has slain a Demon Star. But if I defeat Zeldia here… I might become the thirteenth Hero.
“Asrom, allow me the first strike.”
Kilsas drew the longsword at his hip. Its black hilt gleamed, and its yellow-green blade shimmered with a sharp, metallic sheen.
“You and Lady Sylphiel can move as the situation calls.”
“Will you be all right on your own?”
“Of course. I’m S-rank too.”
Leveling the point of his blade at Zeldia, Kilsas declared:
“I am Kilsas, leader of the Holy Sword Brigade! Zeldia of the Six Demon Stars—you will fall to my Dragonsteel Fang!”
“…Another warrior, then.”
Zeldia’s dark lips curled as he spoke.
“Let me see the measure of your strength.”
“Oh, you’ll see. I’ll show you my true power!”
Chanting an incantation, Kilsas lunged.
A shroud of black mist coiled around Zeldia, pressing the grass flat to the earth.
“A gravity spell?”
“Not that it matters—you’re already too late!”
In an instant, Kilsas blurred to Zeldia’s flank, sword cleaving down.
Got him. At this speed, he won’t even have time to raise a barrier.
Certain of victory, a smirk spread across his lips.
But—
The glowing blade met a blood-red gem embedded in the back of Zeldia’s hand.
With a shriek of metal, the Dragonsteel Fang’s edge chipped away.
“…What—”
Kilsas froze.
Zeldia thrust out his right hand, and his claws punched through Kilsas’s chest.
“Gwahhh!”
Face contorted in agony, Kilsas crumpled to the ground.
“Hmph. So this is your strength?”
Zeldia’s left hand flared with violet light.
“Then die.”
“H-heeelp!”
Kilsas’s scream cracked high and thin.
“What are you doing?!”
Sylphiel leapt between them, weapon raised, shielding Kilsas with her body.
“This time, you’ll fight me!”
