Chapter 112: The Cultural Festival Has Begun, Part 4
『AAAAAAAA!!?』
"Kyori! Cover me!"
"Y-Yes!"
Kyori, who had taken position near the gate connecting the school building to the strange space, launched a fireball that exploded right in the face of the giant grotesque doll monster. Confirming the hit, I aimed my attack at its leg joints.
The monster lost balance and nearly toppled forward, but it somehow managed to stay upright using its two remaining free arms—those not holding students.
But of course, I’m not about to let this golden opportunity slip.
"Take this!"
『GYAAAAAAAAA!?』
I landed a heel kick on one of the four extra arms growing out of the monster's back, smashing it to pieces. Then I grabbed another arm and tore it off with brute force.
From the wounds where the arms had been, black ink-like liquid spewed out like a fountain as the monster let out a terrible scream.
...Seems like it feels pain. And its outer body is softer than I expected.
In that case—!
“!”
I use Ice Magic to generate crampon-like spikes on the soles of my shoes, stomp down hard onto its back—covered in black hair—to gain traction, then leap across to the other side in one swift motion.
“Haaah!”
Generating a sword with Water Magic, I first strike the joint of one of the monster’s arms still holding students, then follow up with a knee strike to destroy it.
I slice off the final remaining arm with my water sword, freeing all the restrained students.
(Water Magic!)
Finally, I catch the four students falling mid-air with a water cushion I create and gently send them toward Kyori.
『GU... GURAAAAAAAA!!』
The monster, having lost all four arms on its back, lets out a roar and flees deeper into the strange space.
Honestly, I want to chase it down, but right now the rescued students need attention more urgently.
With that decision made, I rush over to Kyori.
"Kyori, how are they?"
"They have some injuries from being gripped tightly by that giant doll, and they appear to be in serious mental shock... they've all lost consciousness. I’ve already healed the physical wounds with my spell."
"Got it. I’ll handle restoring their consciousness."
I cast Healing Magic and Recognition Inhibition Magic on the four rescued students.
The Recognition Inhibition will erase the memory of Kyori and me fighting the monster and rescuing them, replacing it with a false memory: "We happened to find them while entering this strange space," and "They shouldn't question Kyori and me."
Now... how to safely get them out of here?
...Alright.
“Shu-kun!?”
Kyori gasps in surprise as I suddenly stick my head through the gate.
Yeah, I suppose this does look odd out of nowhere.
That aside, the gate still connects to the normal school building, and even voices from within the strange space are audible on the other side.
“All students and faculty, please proceed to the gymnasium immediately! I repeat—”
(...Sounds like they’ll be able to make their way to the gym on their own.)
I confirm that evacuation announcements are being broadcast and step back into the strange space.
"It looks like this space is still connected to the school. When they wake up, they should be able to evacuate on their own."
"S-So that's what you were checking… You surprised me sticking your head in like that!"
"Yeah, sorry about that."
As I apologize to the flustered Kyori, I notice one of the rescued students is the girl who played a ghost in the haunted house. At that moment, the group starts regaining consciousness.
“Huh...? Where are we...?”
"Are you okay? We happened to find you while checking this strange area. Are you hurt anywhere?"
"I'm fine... What about you guys?"
"We’re okay too... Thank goodness. That monster must’ve let us go..."
The freed students all breathe sighs of relief.
Now, leaving them here would only be a hassle. Time to get them out.
"That gate over there connects back to the school. You should evacuate through there."
"R-Right. Thanks."
Thanks to Recognition Inhibition Magic, they trust my words without question and head for the gate.
...Oh, right.
"Sorry, one more thing. I think one of my friends went into the haunted house. Did you see anyone else?"
"Someone else...? Oh yeah, I think a girl got taken away by the monster."
"! Can you remember what she looked like?"
"...Sorry. I don’t remember."
"I see. Sorry to hold you up."
"No, it’s fine. Thanks again. …What about you guys?"
"We’re going to stay and keep looking for our friend."
"...Got it. Be careful—there are still crazy monsters lurking around."
"We will."
Even after Kyori's healing and my Healing Magic, the students look completely drained as they pass through the gate and leave the strange space.
Now then—
"Kyori. That monster is almost certainly going to come after us again. So—"
"Even if you tell me to turn back, I’ll refuse. There’s no way I’d leave you behind and run."
Kyori says this firmly, gripping her talisman tightly.
...That was a pointless question.
"Alright. Then stay close, and be on full alert."
"Yes!"
(...If it comes down to it, I’ll use Recognition Inhibition Magic to erase her memory and force her to escape.)
I make that decision internally as I glance deeper into the shadowy space.
Then, using pieces of a giant nearby table and some shattered window glass, I cut out materials with my water sword and use Design and Smithing Technique to build a powerful spotlight-equipped drone.
With it, we proceed deeper into the abnormal space.
(Now that things have calmed down, let’s try a Scan.)
Target: Localized Anomalous Space
Effect: Anomalous space generated by a psychic outburst.
The inner space reflects the subconscious of Ikoma Juri. Objects present at the point of manifestation have been transformed into distorted constructs.
The surrounding area is also being consumed by subspace due to this effect.
Status: Active — the anomaly is gradually expanding.
Notes: N/A
...I see. So this space is growing over time.
And with monsters like that running loose, we don’t have time to waste.
『Gi... Gigi... Welcome...』
『Yo... You’re Welcome...』
As I’m processing that, shadow-like humanoid figures begin descending from above, suspended by threads.
There are ten of them. Their bodies are horribly charred, but their mouths—left intact—reveal white teeth that only add to their eeriness.
『This way... Please, this way...』
Two of the figures suddenly lunge at us, trying to drag us toward them.
"Not happening!"
I respond with a spinning kick that shatters one of their heads, then follow up with a barrage of small ice spears created with Ice Magic, striking their torsos.
"Kyori! I need your support!"
"On it!"
Kyori summons a fire spirit in the shape of a fox from a talisman. It floats around, keeping the shadow figures at bay.
『Gi... Gigi...』
"Take this!"
I use a water hammer heated to extreme temperatures to smash through them while they’re distracted.
Three figures remain.
Time to finish this.
