Chapter: Kinako and the Party

I walked up to Kinako, who looked startled.

“Where are you going?”

“...Nowhere. Just thought I’d sober up by killing a few goblins and earning some pocket change.”

“You’re a terrible liar.”

I stared straight at Kinako.

“You’re planning to take down Zeldia, aren’t you?”

“How do you know that?”

“Melt told me. Said you were thinking of doing something reckless.”

“...Damn that Melt.”

Kinako clicked his sharp fangs together in frustration.

“Kinako...”

I knelt on one knee so I could look him in the eye.

“We’re a team, aren’t we? So why are you trying to fight Zeldia alone?”

“...My mind’s made up.”

Kinako turned his gaze away from me.

“I’m going to defeat Zeldia by myself. I don’t need your help.”

“You’re just worried about us, aren’t you?”

“...You’re still too inexperienced.”

“Even so, I’m coming with you.”

I said it firmly.

“If we take down one of the Six Demon Stars, the kingdom will give us a reward. I want my share—and the fame that comes with it.”

“Liar!”

Kinako smacked me with his paw.

“You don’t care about fame! At least come up with a lie that makes sense!”

“Well... I do want the money. I’d like to donate more to the orphanage.”

“...Haah.”

Kinako let out a deep sigh.

“Do you even understand what you’re saying? Zeldia is a demon who’s destroyed countless towns and villages. Even S-rank adventurers have died fighting him.”

“Of course I understand. The Six Demon Stars are in a league of their own, even among demons.”

“And you still want to fight him?”

“Yeah. Because I want to help you.”

I answered without hesitation.

“Pilun wants to help too—なのだーっ!”

Pilun popped out from behind Kinako. Standing next to him was Almine.

“Sorry we’re late,” Almine said to me.

“Took us a while to get everything ready.”

“It’s fine. I’ve been keeping him here for you.”

“Almine? Pilun?”

Kinako’s eyes widened.

“You two are planning to come as well?”

“Of course.”

Almine spoke clearly.

“We’re in the same party. And besides—if we defeat one of the Six Demon Stars, the kingdom might grant us permission to enter the ‘Great Labyrinth of Chaos.’”

“You realize we could die, right?”

“We could die fighting weak monsters too. Plenty of adventurers have been killed by goblins.”

“...Haah.”

Kinako scratched his head with his white claws.

“You’re all fools. There’s no need for you to go this far for me.”

Under the moonlight, Kinako’s eyes shimmered faintly.

“...Fine. We’ll take down Zeldia together—and claim that reward!”
