Sōzoku Shita Sofu no Ie no Urayama ni Danjon ga Dekimashita - Chapter 41

Dungeon Basement 3rd Floor ④

After finishing our lunch, we drank tea and relaxed.

It seemed Snow had defeated all the horned rabbit monsters nearby.

Each time Snow defeated a monster, he would come back carrying a magic stone in his mouth.

Nakamori-san praised him, "Good boy!"

Then she petted him.

I was curious about the lake where no monsters appeared and said I wanted to go scout it out.

"I’ll go with you!" Nakamori-san said.

We packed up, checked the map, and started walking — for some reason, holding hands again.

When we arrived at the lake, our three home spirits were there.

Along with another spirit.

This one was bigger than Anemone and Freesia, who had evolved into mid-level spirits, with light blue hair and light blue eyes.

And light blue wings on its back.

No doubt — it was a spirit.

Moreover, a high-rank one.

As I was thinking this, the light blue spirit spoke to me.

"I heard about you from these children. You really cherish your spirits, don’t you?"

I answered, "They’re my family, of course!"

Then the blue spirit said, "I have a favor to ask. Please take this child with you."

The blue spirit summoned a small light blue spirit from the lake.

It was about the same size as Viola — so it seemed to be a lower-rank spirit.

"I want this child to see the outside world," the big spirit said.

The small spirit flew over to me.

I thought about a name to make the contract.

Since all my spirits are named after flowers, I thought a blue flower name would be fitting.

"How about Veronica?"

When I said that, the blue spirit shook its head.

It didn’t like it.

I was stuck.

Not coming up with anything.

Seeing Nakamori-san looking confused because she couldn’t see the spirit, I explained the situation and asked, "Do you know any blue flower names?"

Nakamori-san put her index finger to her lips and said, "How about Lupinus?"

The spirit nodded up and down.

It seemed to like it.

I said to the blue spirit, "Your name is Lupinus."

It shone brightly, and a mechanical female voice echoed in my head.

≪Contract with Water Spirit established≫

Yes!

A new family member!

This one was definitely a water spirit.

"Lupinus! Let’s get along from now on!"

My four contracted spirits held hands and happily flew through the sky.

The large lake spirit had one more favor.

"There are a lot of magic stones sunk at the bottom of the lake. Please take them with you."

Apparently, this lake had no fish monsters because the spirit was defeating them.

The fish monsters got in the way when the spirit tried to collect magic stones, and the stones piled up at the bottom, becoming a nuisance.

I said if it was okay to take only as many as would fit in my backpack, the lake started spurting magic stones like a geyser, which fell at my feet.

With Nakamori-san’s help, I packed them into my backpack.

"If you come nearby again, please help collect magic stones!" the spirit said.

"Got it!" I answered.

This was definitely something to report to the branch chief.

I’ll report back once we return.

Nakamori-san and I thanked the spirits and started walking toward the dungeon exit.

Then, I told Nakamori-san something I had been feeling for a while.

"Shiratama and Snow can see spirits."

Sometimes they watch the spirits with their eyes; just now, they had been looking at the big lake spirit.

That’s when I was certain.

Nakamori-san asked Shiratama and Snow,

"Can you see spirits?"

The two animals responded with their cries.

Nakamori-san looked downcast.

"I’m the only one who can’t see them…"

I wanted to help, but this was something beyond my control.

I silently took Nakamori-san’s hand as we walked.

Her mood gradually improved.

Ah — I was relieved.

I let out a small sigh.

Translator’s Note:

  • Spirit Contract and Naming: Naming spirits after flowers is a common motif in fantasy to emphasize their gentle or natural qualities. Lupinus (ルピナス) is a blue-flowered plant often used for naming in Japanese fantasy works.

  • Contract Confirmation: The mechanical female voice in the protagonist’s mind is a trope often used in JRPGs and light novels to signal system-like confirmations, blending fantasy and game-like elements.

  • Seeing Spirits: The ability to see spirits is a special trait often given to certain characters or familiars (here, Shiratama and Snow). Nakamori-san’s inability to see them is a gentle emotional point showing her feeling left out.

  • Magic Stones (魔石): Items often dropped by defeated magical creatures in fantasy settings, used as crafting or power sources.
