Classmate wa Isekai de Yuusha ni Natta kedo, Ore dake Gendai Nihon ni Okizari ni Narimashita - Chapter 95

Chapter 95 : A Difficulty Overcome 5

“Hey! Has Lady Kyōri been found yet!?”

“Not yet! Where the hell did that little girl hide!?”
“If we don’t find her soon, we won’t be able to push her as head of the family and boost our status…!”
“We need to find her quickly and marry her off to my son—!”

In the central courtyard of the Kuon main estate, members of the Kuon family and their affiliate houses had returned and were airing their grievances.

Their current top priority was to secure the favor of Kyōri, the de facto heir to the family, and bask in the rewards that would follow.

But Kyōri herself had gone missing—and her disappearance left the family members bewildered and anxious.

If she remained missing, the next heir would, by default, be Kuon Genji.

And everyone present remembered what happened inside the barrier—specifically, the display of Genji's unhinged, violent nature.

That alone made him an unacceptable candidate for head of the Kuon family.

“Damn it! That bastard—pulling something like that—ghk!”

Genji, who had been knocked out cold by Kyōri with a single throw, was now bound by shikigami. But the moment he regained consciousness, he began behaving erratically.

“Why!? Why can’t I even hit one of these worthless puppets!?”

Genji kept swinging at the shikigami restraining him—but somehow, every punch he threw landed squarely on his own cheek.

“Damn it… Damn it…! How did it come to this? I’m the heir to the Kuon family…!”

Sobbing, Genji was dragged away toward a cell by the shikigami. His pathetic state was so absurd that even members of rival factions shared a common realization:

If this man became the family head, the Kuon name would become a joke.

All the more reason to find Kyōri—capable, educated, and proven—and make her the rightful heir as soon as possible.

“Still no sign of Lady Kyōri!?”
“N-No, sir! It seems that outsider used some kind of technique to interfere with our search—”
“Tch! That damned outsider!”

An elderly man furiously slammed his cane against the ground.

The atmosphere in the courtyard was tense—boiling over, even. Everyone present was outraged and desperate. If Kyōri wasn’t found, they’d be forced to name Genji as heir.

And that would inevitably mean losing their current status at the top of the exorcist world.

They had to make Kyōri the next head of the Kuon family.

As every last trick was being deployed to find her—

“—My deepest apologies, everyone, for causing such worry.”

A clear voice rang out from behind the largest sliding doors leading into the courtyard.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

There she stood—Kuon Kyōri, the very person they had been frantically searching for.

“N-No need to apologize, truly…”
“Thank heavens you're safe, Lady Kyōri! Now then—let us proceed to the altar for the succession ceremony at once!”

As if all their complaints and anger had been an illusion, the elders immediately turned obsequious, urging her to complete the ritual.

Kyōri remained silent and began walking toward the central altar, surrounded by fawning elders.

She placed her hand on her chest, took a deep breath, and then spoke:

“I have no interest in becoming the head of the Kuon family. I will yield the position to someone more fitting.”

The words hit like a bombshell—leaving the entire courtyard stunned, then confused, and then furious.

“Do you realize what you’re saying about the honor of the Kuon name!? No interest!? That title is not so cheap that it can be discarded on a whim!”

A bearded man barked as he stormed up to her. Others, men and women alike, began to surround her.

But Kyōri stood firm, unshaken. She looked them in the eyes and declared:

“The honor of the Kuon name? What part of backstabbing family members and amassing wealth through corruption is honorable?”

Her bold words earned her a mix of outrage and disbelief.

“H-Haha… It seems Lady Kyōri is simply exhausted.”

The bearded man gave a dry laugh as he pulled several ofuda from his pocket, summoning multiple humanoid shikigami.

Others followed suit, surrounding her with summoned spirits.

—Now it was my turn.

“If you behave, this won’t go the way it did with that brat—ghk!?”
“W-What is this!?”
“Damn it! I can’t move—!”

Just as they tried to close in, several round devices shot down from the sky.

They morphed midair into amoeba-like slimes, wrapping around the attackers’ limbs and pinning them down.

(Dispel.)

As I dropped the cloaking spell beside Kyōri, I used Water Sight to immediately cast Dispel on the summoned shikigami trying to detain her. One by one, they vanished into mist.

“Iori Osamu…!? So you’re the one behind this farce!”
“Damn outsider—!”
“You’re the one who manipulated Lady Kyōri!”

The courtyard erupted in fury. They hurled accusations at me, assuming I had brainwashed Kyōri.

Given what just happened with Genji and the possession scandal, I guess their paranoia made sense.

But that was fine.

Because now their hate was focused on me instead of her. Just as planned.

“You don’t actually care about the Kuon heir, do you? What you want is the influence the title brings. You want to use that to extort weaker exorcist houses, deal with criminal syndicates, and keep living in luxury. Am I wrong?”

“How dare you! We would never—”
“Really? Then I suppose you weren’t the ones who sold the Satō family’s heirloom to the yakuza two months ago?”
“H-How do you—!?”

Right now, I was using Water Sight to scan every person in the courtyard and cast Appraise on them.

The moment I mentioned corruption, their thoughts betrayed them. Their guilt made everything painfully clear.

“You—smuggling youma remains to foreign mobs. You—cursing the face of a girl from a rival house. You—manipulating youma to wipe out another family and stealing credit. And you—helped Genji poison the current head. All that… in just one year. Impressive.”

The reactions were split: some were confused by the revelations, others were panicking that their secrets had been exposed.

Unfortunately, the latter were the majority.

This house had truly rotted to its core.

“And then you were planning to blame it all on Kyōri. Is that about right?”
“…Ugh…”
“Now do you understand why she has no interest in leading this cesspool? Anyone would walk away.”

My words silenced the entire courtyard.

“So here's how it is: Kyōri won’t be the next head. Whoever still wants the title after all this—be my guest.”

With that, I took Kyōri’s hand and turned toward the exit.

“Wait! Outsider! You think you can get away with—”
“Oh, feel free to try something. You’ll just end up embarrassing yourselves like Genji did.”
“Tch! That was because of you—!”
“By the way, he’s still under a recognition-block spell. Anyone who tries to harm another out of malice will end up hitting themselves instead. Just saying.”

That shut them up instantly.

With the path clear, we left the Kuon estate behind us.

Oh—one last thing.

“—By the way, I hear the national bureau that handles rogue abilities has been keeping an eye on you. You might want to prepare yourselves.”

A soft thud behind us suggested someone fainted, but we never looked back.

Thus, we made our escape from the accursed Kuon estate.

Translator’s Note:

  • Kyōri’s rejection of the Kuon headship and her moral stand reflects a classic motif in Japanese literature: the righteous individual turning away from a corrupt institution. This mirrors real-world criticisms of traditional hierarchies that maintain power through nepotism and deceit.

  • The “recognition-block spell” causing aggressors to harm themselves is a clever nod to karma-based curses common in Japanese folklore, where evil intentions rebound upon the caster.

  • Osamu's exposure of the Kuon family's sins through real-time mental analysis evokes a recurring theme in modern Japanese fantasy: magic as a truth-revealing force, used to strip away social masks and uncover hidden rot.
