Chapter 90 – The Final Battle Begins, Part 5
— side Kuon Kyori
"…Seriously, that person always effortlessly surpasses my expectations."
I let out a breath of awe once again as I watch Iori-kun rocket through the air with that strange weapon attached to something like a rocket, heading straight for Ibara-san.
But I can’t afford to stand still forever.
"Go, ‘Flame Leopard’!"
From my talisman, a large flaming leopard bursts forth, incinerating a swarm of little demons.
Seeing that, the other demons scatter in all directions, trying to strike at my vital points.
"Tch…!"
I pull out a talisman with a sealing spell for defense, attempting to block the attacks.
Before I can do that, the beetle-shaped machine Iori-kun left intercepts the demon’s attack, and from its mouth shoots a water jet that slices a demon clean in two.
"‘Flame Falcon’!"
Seizing the opportunity, I scatter a group of demons with a new offensive talisman, lean back on the machine, and catch my breath.
"…It’s begun…!"
I hear explosions and look up to see flashes and blasts erupting repeatedly in the sky.
"…Amazing."
Though I don’t understand how it works, Ibara-san attacks with explosive flames from the gigantic Ibaraki-Dōji arm floating in the air.
Meanwhile, Iori-kun darts through the sky with his rocket-like weapon, striking with ice spears at every opening.
Since summer camp, I’ve wished to stand beside Iori-kun as an equal.
But judging from this, that wish still feels far away.
(…But!)
That doesn’t mean there’s nothing I can do.
I have to hold this position as long as possible and keep this horde of demons away from Iori-kun.
I steel myself, pull out a new talisman, and fix my gaze on the enemies.

"Well, well, isn’t that about your limit?"
"Tch…!"
After dodging another swipe of fiery claws, Ibara taunts me, pointing at my makeshift rocket tonfa.
In fact, black smoke is puffing from it in many places, and its flight speed is gradually dropping.
"Then I’ll just give it to you!"
I crank the rocket’s output to maximum and throw the entire tonfa toward Ibara.
The rocket streaks unpredictably at supersonic speed, crashing into Ibara’s massive right hand and detonating spectacularly.
But despite the direct hit and explosion’s double damage, Ibara smirks without a care.
"You really thought you could finish me off with such an attack?"
"No, the real move’s coming now."
"! This is...!"
Inside the rocket, the heavily protected capsule maintained its form and mechanism despite the collision and explosion.
Then, it clicks and splits in two, releasing a thick smoke screen that envelops the area.
"A smoke screen, huh? For an esper, that’s pretty sneaky."
"Sorry, but I’m not the kind of guy who can be proud of some vague title like ‘esper’!"
I taunt Ibara through the smoke, form an ice platform with Ice Magic, and land on it.
I take stock of the battlefield.
(Kyori’s doing well keeping the demons away for now. But that won’t last much longer.)
I’ll have to go all out and aim for a short battle.
I activate Item Box and pull out all the stored materials.
Using Design and Blacksmithing Technique, I quickly craft baseball-sized devices and guidance units, then throw them above the smoke-screened area.
"Your companion must be tired too. Shall we finish this soon?"
Just then, Ibara swings her right arm powerfully, dispersing the smoke.
She descends slowly with a bewitching smile.
"Yeah, I was thinking the same. Let’s end this quickly."
I retort, then create an enormous, thick ice floor between the base of the giant tree where Kyori is and the airspace where we are.
"You want a ground fight? Fine, I’ll accept."
"Nope, what I have in store for you is a super high-difficulty bullet hell."
Ibara tilts her head at my words, but her expression twists when she notices something falling from above.
"You’ve done it now…!"
"Thanks for that. Now enjoy my special ‘Airborne Bomb Dodging Game’."
Using materials from the prototype pile bunker, I set up and dropped many flashbang and smoke bombs aimed at Ibara with the guidance units.
They won’t kill, but since I call them bombs, she has to react accordingly.
"Are you serious? If you hit her directly, you and Kyori down there won’t get away unscathed."
"No use trying to scare me. I’ve already tested the power of those bombs and how long this ice floor and I can hold. I’m doing this with all that in mind. You know what that means, right?"
Of course, that’s a total lie.
I just thought of this air bombardment plan moments ago and don’t know if it’ll really hold.
What I do know is that those bombs can’t kill freaks like me or Ibara.
And I know that even if all bombs go off, Kyori below won’t be harmed.
So I stay calm, confident, and face Ibara straight on this ice floor.
"Is that so?"
Ibara shoots a heat ray from her right arm to blast the incoming flashbangs and smoke bombs, trying to minimize damage.
She also summons new demons in the air to drop on the ice floor to prevent being caught off guard.
But this is no problem.
"…Finally, it’s your turn."
I equip the last object stored in the Item Box.
The ‘romantic’ weapon I made just to drive a metal stake with explosives—the Pile Bunker—on my left arm, and the cursed blade on my right.
I enhance my leg strength with Physical Enhancement and leap toward Ibara.
(Ignite!)
At the same time, I command the guidance units to detonate all flashbangs and smoke bombs.
"Damn it…"
Ibara must have realized my intent, as she flips and heads toward me.
"You were a little late to notice."
I sneer and use her body and giant right arm as shields to block the intense flashes.
Then I slam the Pile Bunker into her palm.
"Grrr…!"
"This is the end!"
As she flinches from the impact, I stab the cursed blade into Ibaraki-Dōji’s arm.
In the next moment, the demon arm emits a red light so bright it drowns out the flashes.
It detaches from Ibara’s body.
"Hah."
Seeing her energy rapidly drain and that she’s losing consciousness, I create an elevator from part of the ice floor and generate ice wires to bind her body.
I slowly and carefully lower her.
Looking down, the horde of demons surrounding Kyori writhe and crumble into dust.
"It’s over, right…?"
Just as I mutter this, the giant tree begins to crumble into dust, just like the demons.
Even using Appraisal, I can only get info on this layer, so the sealing spell likely stopped functioning.
Well then.
"Now, I’ll have a good chat with you, Ibara."
Though she’s unconscious and unresponsive, I say this and continue descending.
