Chapter 83 – The Ritual Begins (Part 3)
—Thirty minutes earlier.
“Kekekekekeh!”
“Ugh… Yeah, this is the kind of freak you don’t wanna run into in the middle of the night.”
While wandering through the barrier, I ran into a floating Noh mask-looking monster.
It let out a disturbing laugh—and in an instant, it multiplied, surrounding me on all sides.
Well, guess I’ll start by using Appraisal on this creepy piece of crap.
Cursed Noh Mask – Vengeful Spirit
Status: Starving, Enraged
Note: A mask haunted by the lingering grudge of a Noh actor who gained fame and fortune but secretly committed serial murders, eventually executed for his crimes.
Automatically tracks humans, creates numerous duplicates, and attaches itself to a victim’s face to devour their flesh starting from the head.
Currently, the duplicates are positioned to protect the main body, which is directly behind Shu Iori.
I’ve seen all kinds of monsters so far, but this is the first time I’ve run into a cursed item type, like that demonic blade from before.
Still, what I have to do doesn’t change.
“Before it runs—I'm smashing 'em all!”
I activated Body Reinforcement, then slammed my fist into the ground with full force.
The shards kicked up from the impact scattered into the air, striking down the cursed masks one by one before they could even move.
“……!?”
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted one mask trying to flee from the debris—it was the only one reacting, meaning it had to be the real one.
“And you’re next!”
I switched the reinforcement to my legs, leapt forward, and crushed the main mask with a powerful kick.
“That should take care of most of the monsters on this floor. Whew.”
Letting out a sigh of relief, I felt that old sensation I hadn’t experienced in a while.
“Status.”

Whoa, I finally leveled up again.
Now I can go wild without having to worry about MP for a while.
(Alright, guess it’s about time to move on to the next floor.)
Back when I watched Genji Kuon’s Selection Ritual, I saw the labyrinth inside the floating water spheres outside—it had five floors in total.
This particular layer had no stairs leading down, nor any doorways back to the real world.
It might’ve been altered by that thorny magic, but at the very least, this had to be the bottom layer.
Which means my job is simple:
Find the others and head upward.
“…!”
As I thought that, I felt a presence behind me.
I slowly turned around, but… there was nothing there.
Just my imagination? I was starting to think so when—
“KISHAAAAAA!!”
“Whoa!”
A giant black-scaled lizard arm came crashing down, trying to flatten me.
I jumped back to dodge and quickly checked what had attacked me.
“…Okay. Now that’s a literal monster.”
What stood before me was a massive lizard-like creature—six legs, four glowing red eyes, and a long tongue lashing from its mouth.
“Shhhhaaaaa…”
The ambush had failed, so the creature backed off, putting distance between us.
And then—
“You’ve got to be kidding me!”
It turned its massive body invisible.
So not only was it enormous with extra limbs and eyes, but it could also turn invisible?
“KISHAAAAH!”
Fortunately, the beast revealed two key weaknesses—
It roared before attacking, and it had to turn visible during the strike.
Plus, from the way its body shimmered, it wasn’t actually turning invisible. It was just camouflaging like a chameleon, shifting the color and texture of its skin.
Still, if I couldn’t consistently keep track of it, I’d get worn down over time.
I had to figure out a way to see it—constantly.
“…! Wait a sec.”
Just then, a cherry blossom petal fell into my hand.
Probably dislodged from all the chaos just now.
Hmm? Hold on. If I use this petal…
(“Design.” “Blacksmithing Technique.”)
I instantly activated the two skills, using the petal as material to create a makeshift paintball.
As the monster lunged at me again, I hurled the paintball as hard as I could—straight into one of its four eyes.
“GISHAAAAAA!?”
The lizard monster let out a pained shriek as its eye was struck.
Seizing the opportunity, I grabbed its tail and started spinning like I was doing a hammer throw.
“ORAAAA!!”
And just when I reached peak momentum, I let go.
“GYAGYAAAA!?”
The monster was flung into the air, flailing its six limbs wildly, trying to grab onto the wall.
But of course, there was no stopping what came next.
“GRAGGYAAAAAA—!”
It slammed straight through the transparent barrier—and collided head-on with some massive humanoid figure on the other side.
And in that instant—
“Ah.”
I noticed something near the huge humanoid shadow.
A person.
Wait… did I just hurl a monster right at a person!?
“Oh crap—!”
I bolted toward the landing zone as fast as I could.
Moments later, I spotted the mangled corpse of the giant lizard—and a pile of crushed ape-like youma beneath it.
But none of that mattered.
What I needed to know was—what happened to the person I saw over there?
“Hey! I thought I saw someone! Are you okay!?”
Just as I started moving the bodies out of the way—
“U-Um…!”
A voice called out behind me.
I turned—and found two kids, a boy and a girl, around ten years old, covered in dust.
Relief surged through me for a moment at the sight of survivors, but I couldn’t afford to relax yet.
There might still be others trapped or injured.
“Sorry. I kind of flung that lizard down here using a risky move. Were you the only ones in this room?”
“Y-Yes. It was just us.”
“M-More importantly, we wanted to thank you!”
Thank me?
Before I could ask what they meant, the two of them stepped forward, standing side by side.
Then—
““Thank you so much for saving us!!””
…Uhhh…?
