Chapter 103: Preparations for the Cultural Festival Have Begun — Part 6
“Good morning, Kyori.”
“G-Good morning, Shu-kun.”
The next morning, Kyori and I met at the same place as yesterday. We felt a bit embarrassed calling each other by our first names as we walked together toward the station.
But still…
“Ah, the tests are just a week away now… I really don’t want to…”
“Are there any subjects you’re particularly worried about?”
“To be honest, I’m worried about all of them. I just don’t want to fail any.”
“…Huh? Your grades were supposed to be near the top, right? I even saw your name on the school bulletin board.”
“Just because I scored well on the first semester’s tests doesn’t mean I’ll do well this semester.”
“That’s true…”
Even as I said that, I knew deep down that I was just an anxious mess. No matter how many formulas I memorized or how many English words and kanji I wrote over and over, I couldn’t shake the feeling of doubt: “Is this really enough? Did I miss something? What if I remembered a formula wrong?”
I could just use skills like ‘Universal Translation’ or ‘Identification’ and skip all this studying and worry.
(But if I did that, it’d be so lame…)
I had been avoiding relying on my skills for tests and exams so far, especially after telling Kyori that I want to become someone who can stand beside her without powers.
So, there’s no choice but to study hard.
But with everything going on with Ikoma-senpai and the cultural festival… Ah, no, relying on skills would still be lame.
Oops, I almost got lost in my own thoughts again and left Kyori hanging.
“So, how about you? Confident for the tests?”
“I’m not sure. I missed a lot of school because of stuff at home…”
“But you still managed to answer when the teacher called on you, right?”
“That was just luck — I happened to be studying on my own. I might still drop in grades this time.”
Kyori smiled bitterly.
But she’d gotten perfect scores last time, so even if her grades dropped, she’d probably keep the top spot.
Well, either way…
“We still have to study hard, huh.”
“Yeah.”
We both gave a tired smile to that obvious conclusion.
Then a thought came to me.
We’re both uncertain about the tests. The exams fall over the weekend. There’s no club activities during exams. And I have something secret I want to tell Kyori.
Also, selfishly, now that we’re together, I want to do couple things with her.
So, an idea popped up.
“…Hey, this might be a suggestion or more like a consultation, but since neither of us is confident about the tests, how about a study session this weekend? Just the two of us, if possible?”
“Definitely! Let’s do that!”
Kyori grabbed my hand and smiled widely at my nervous invitation.
I froze at her unexpected enthusiasm, and she blushed, quickly letting go.
“…Ah, sorry for getting carried away…”
“N-No, it’s fine. So you’re agreeing to a study session, right?”
Kyori nodded shyly, still embarrassed. Her ears even turned a little red.
“Okay, so which day? Saturday or Sunday? I’m free both days.”
“I’m fine either day… But if possible, I want to be with you both days.”
(Cute…)
I almost hugged her on the street but forced myself to stop — not exactly appropriate right there.
Still, it’s surprising how much your perspective changes when your relationship changes.
“Alright, then let’s study together both days.”
“Yes!”
Kyori truly looked happy.
Now, the only remaining problem was where to hold it.
“Hmm, where should we have the study session? The library would be quiet and have few people from our school, so it’d be easier to focus.”
“Um, could we have it at your place?”
“Mine?”
“Yes. I’d like to visit your home at least once…”
Hmm, study sessions at my place, huh?
There’s nothing I’d be embarrassed to have seen there. Dad won’t be home. Kana I can tell to go hang out somewhere on the weekend because I have friends coming over.
“Alright. Then study sessions at my place on Saturday and Sunday. I’ll send you a message with the nearest station later. We can meet there.”
“Yes!”
We reached the station as we talked.
It was really hard to say goodbye for now.
“Well then, see you at school.”
“Yeah, you take care too.”
After parting ways with Kyori, I headed to the place where Ikoma-senpai had been harassed by delinquents recently and used ‘Identification’.
The results were all straightforward descriptions—nothing suspicious.
(Still, just in case, I’ll set up some drones with ‘Perception Inhibition Magic’.)
I cast an improved ‘Water’s Eye’ skill on several drones and spread them around the station before preparing to teleport near the school with ‘Spatial Transfer Magic’.
“!?”
Suddenly, someone grabbed the hem of my uniform.
Who was it? I couldn’t sense any hostile intent.
“A-are you going to hear me out?”
I turned and saw Kyori standing there — the same one I’d just parted with.
But why was she here?
“Kyori? Didn’t you go to the station?”
“Yes. But, well, there’s something I want to do… It’s really personal, though…”
“Something you want to do?”
“Well, I want to go to school with you…”
“But if we do that, people at school will see us.”
“I don’t mind! For me, even one more second with you is more important!”
Kyori was so popular she was called an angel by everyone, and I was basically a nobody.
If we walked together to school, everyone would definitely stare and gossip.
But Kyori had the courage to say she wanted to be with me.
Honestly, I want to be with her even one more second.
“Then, let’s go together.”
“P-please…”
We left the alley and walked toward the station together.
We’d probably get weird looks from Rentaro and others once we got to school.
…but
“Since it’s a special occasion, want to hold hands?”
“Yes!”
Kyori looked nervous but happily took my hand.
—Seeing Kyori’s smiling face, I thought, all those stares from school don’t matter at all.
Because her smile is what matters most to me.
