The Paper User: Exiled for a ‘Trash Skill,’ Awakens True Power and Rises with Two Unique Skills - Chapter 19

Chapter 19 : Promotion Exam – Part 5

In a clearing deep within the forest, dozens of adventurers had gathered.

Staff from the Adventurer’s Guild were spread throughout the area, checking over the monster materials the adventurers had brought back.

“Let’s see… two Flying Turtle Shells… That’ll be one gold coin and two large silver coins. Congratulations! You’ve cleared the conditions and are officially promoted to E-Rank.”

“Alright! I did it!”

A brown-haired boy pumped his fist.

“I’m finally E-Rank too!”

A girl beside him spoke up.

“I managed to catch a Rainbow Bird, so I passed pretty easily. I owe it to Dalis, the god of fate.”

“Yeah, luck played a big role in this exam. Even if you’ve got the skills, if you can’t find monsters, there’s nothing you can do.”

“Right. Looks like there are still people who haven’t met the requirements yet.”

“If they’re not back by now, they’re in trouble. Less than two hours left until the exam ends.”

Just then, Albel stepped out from the shadows of the trees.

He pulled a golden pelt from his magic pouch and tossed it to one of the guild staff.

“I-Is this… a Golden Bear Pelt?”

The staffer’s eyes widened in shock.

“Yeah. It’s a smaller one, but it should fetch at least six gold coins.”

“I-I see. But… how did you manage to take down a Golden Bear? Even D-Rank adventurers struggle to solo one of those…”

“Took some doing, but I pulled it off.”

Albel flashed his pearly whites and puffed out his chest.

“Well, I am a member of the Holy Sword Order. It’d be shameful to scrape by with just enough for a pass.”

“As expected of you, Albel.”

Camilla placed a hand on his shoulder.

“You really pulled it off, huh? Taking down a Golden Bear.”

“What can I say. So, how’d you do?”

“I took out a bunch of One-Horned Rabbits and Purple Lizards to barely scrape together a gold coin’s worth of materials.”

“Barely, huh? Kinda lame.”

“Not my fault! I couldn’t find any high-value monsters.”

Camilla pouted and brushed her red hair aside with a flick.

“If I had found a Golden Bear, I could’ve taken it down with fire magic, no problem.”

“Yeah, and then you’d char the pelt and ruin the value.”

Albel lightly tapped her arm.

“So, what about Dazzle?”

“I cleared the conditions about three hours ago.”

From behind Camilla, Dazzle stepped into view.

“Altogether, I gathered about one gold coin and five large silver coins’ worth.”

“Nice. If we all made it to E-Rank, then we’re solid.”

“Hey, those guys… aren’t they from the Holy Sword Order?”

Nearby adventurers began whispering and casting glances toward Albel and the others.

“Taking down a Golden Bear… that’s insane.”

“Y-Yeah. A D-Rank senior from my party got killed by one of those…”

“Well, if the Holy Sword Order recruited them, they must’ve had talent from the start. Probably multiple combat Skills or something.”

“Yeah, they really know how to pick good rookies.”

Hearing the praise, a smirk curled at Albel’s lips.

“Heh… might’ve stood out a little too much.”

“Well, we should get used to standing out.”

Camilla grinned.

“Once we hit A-Rank, our faces and names will be known throughout the city.”

“Why stop there? I’m going S-Rank. I’ll make sure everyone on the entire Gem Continent knows the name Albel!”

He flicked his brown bangs with exaggerated flair.

“Oh, that reminds me—I've got a funny story.”

Dazzle piped up.

“It’s about Yakumo.”

“Huh? What about him?”

“Well, you see…”

Dazzle proceeded to tell them how he’d kicked Yakumo’s Thunder Squirrel Tail into the campfire, sabotaging his ability to pass.

“So yeah, Yakumo probably won’t make it in time to collect enough materials. He’s still not back, even now.”

“Pfft, that’s hilarious.”

Albel sneered.

“Kicked out of the Holy Sword Order and flunking the E-Rank exam? Sounds about right for someone of his level.”

“Exactly. He’s only gotten by on luck so far, but this time? He’s done for. Hihihi.”

Dazzle let out a shrill laugh.

“I’m sure the party leader who invited him will figure it out now—Yakumo’s just a useless Paper User.”

“Haha, yeah. No doubt.”

The group burst into laughter.

Just then, from the narrow animal trail leading into the clearing—Yakumo appeared.
