Chapter 58 – I Learned About an Urban Legend (Part 5)

“Thank you for coming, young man.”

In the dead of night, at an abandoned factory on the outskirts of town, the pink hero suit that had saved the boy just hours ago greeted him warmly.

“The fact that you came here… must mean you’ve made your decision.”

“Yes! I want to become a hero like you!”

Pleased with the boy’s answer, the pink-suited figure nodded in satisfaction and held out their right hand.

“Then take my hand. I’ll bring you to our base.”

“Okay!”

As the boy took their hand with eager resolve, their bodies surged into the night sky like lightning, swiftly traveling to a massive object floating motionless at an altitude of 20,000 meters.

“Welcome. To our headquarters — The Base.”

What lay before them looked straight out of a Sunday morning tokusatsu show — a secret base housing a massive Tyrannosaurus-themed mecha.

Everyone within the facility wore full-body hero suits that masked any trace of identity, gender, or facial features.

“Let’s start with your aptitude test.”

“Aptitude test?”

“Yes. Every hero suit is custom-built to match the wearer’s unique traits and compatibility.”

The pink hero turned slightly, showing off their own suit in a proud gesture.

“So, how do you test for compatibility?”

“Just a simple injection. Then the Commander will design your personalized suit based on the results.”

“An injection…”

“No need to worry. Come now.”

Though visibly nervous, the boy steeled himself and followed the pink hero.

---

“[White]—please run the test on our new recruit.”

“Understood. On my way.”

Stopping in front of a door emblazoned with an emblem of a clenched fist and syringe, the pink-suited figure raised their voice.

From the intercom, a genderless voice responded. The door creaked open with a heavy metallic groan.

Beyond lay a pristine medical room lined with expensive-looking equipment — surgical tables, MRI scanners, and more.

“So you’re the new recruit I’ve heard about.”

As the boy looked around in awe, the same voice echoed again — this time from above.

Looking up, he saw a white hero suit descending slowly, jet thrusters firing in reverse. This was clearly Dr. The White.

“Allow me to introduce Dr. The White, our medical officer in the Super Rescue Squadron: The Hero. Bit of an oddball, but harmless.”

“A rude introduction, Rose Pink Baroness.”

Having exchanged this type of banter many times before, the two returned to formality as Dr. The White turned toward the boy.

“You’ve been briefed, yes? Rest your arm on that platform.”

“Okay.”

“It may sting. But if you want to be a hero, you can handle it.”

“Of course!”

The boy did as told, and the doctor drew a sample of what looked like blood.

“All done. You did well.”

He gave the boy a gentle pat on the head.

“Rose, I leave the rest to you.”

“Got it. Follow me, kid.”

“Ah, yes!”

The boy bowed respectfully before exiting with Rose.

---

“Um… could I ask you some questions?”

“Of course. We’re comrades now. Ask away.”

“How many heroes are here?”

“About 300. All of them battle evil day and night.”

“Three hundred…? That’s a lot. Do they all live here?”

“Yes. We must always be ready to respond to danger.”

“I see… that’s why the letter said I’d have to leave home.”

“Exactly. Ah—here we are.”

They stopped at a door no larger than an average apartment entrance.

“From today on, this will be your new home.”

The room resembled a typical one-room apartment — bath, toilet, fridge, wardrobe, desk. Everything seemed normal… except for one thing.

“Um… what’s that?”

The boy pointed nervously to a wall-sized monitor.

“That’s where orders from the Commander will appear.”

“The Commander?”

“Yes. A hero who returned from another world and founded this organization by himself.”

“He did all this… alone? Um, have you met him, Rose-san?”

“Once. Only once.”

“Wow! What was he like—”

“Sorry. I’m not allowed to talk about that.”

Rose turned away.

…Looks like I’ve extracted as much intel as I can through peaceful means.

“Anyway, you must be tired. Your hero suit will be ready by noon tomorrow, so rest up—”

“UNdeRsTOod.”

As I focused my intent, the boy’s body burst into a blue liquid, dissolving into a slime that engulfed the room.

“Wh-What is this!?”

The so-called Rose Pink Baroness struggled, but the slime held tight. They couldn’t move a single finger.

Yeah, looks like infiltration's a go.

---

“Alright, I’m going in.”

“…This better work. If I end up merged with a fly during transit—”

“Relax. That’s never happened. Let’s go.”

Cutting the [Sensory Link], I used the water puppet as a teleport marker and cast [Spatial Transfer Magic].

“Wh-Who are you!? How did you even get here—”

The real Rose Pink Baroness, clearly baffled by my sudden appearance under [Perception Obstruction Magic], stared at me.

“Ah—sorry for the shoes. I’m with the government. Mind if I ask you a few questions?”

I smiled as warmly as I could manage while facing down the mysterious hero.

📌 Translator's Notes:

Super Rescue Squadron: The Hero (超救助戦隊ザ・ヒーロー): A parody of Super Sentai/Power Rangers, with exaggerated naming and hierarchy.

Dr. The White / Rose Pink Baroness: Color-coded names echo traditional sentai character naming conventions.

Commander: Allegedly an "isekai returnee", further hinting at genre subversion.

20000 meters altitude: Well above commercial airspace, showing how ridiculously high-tech this “base” is.

Slime & Water Magic: The MC’s magic allows body manipulation and teleportation via magical constructs.

Perception Obstruction Magic (認識阻害魔法): A common stealth trope in fantasy settings, making the user hard to identify.

Spatial Transfer Magic (空間転移魔法): Classic teleportation skill, enhanced here by using magical puppets as anchor point
