Chapter 50 – The Test of Courage Begins (Part 6)
As the final talisman was torn away, a burst of black smoke erupted from the blade.
The smoke took on a humanoid form, and from within the slime, it reached down and pulled out the rusted sword buried inside.
"......!"
Sensing something ominous, Kuon launched a barrage of fire bullets at the smoke—but they had no effect. Meanwhile, the smoke absorbed the surrounding grass, flowers, and soil, gradually forming a solid body.
What appeared before them was something no one would mistake—a samurai in full armor.
A soot-streaked golden helmet adorned with horns, a fearsome demon-faced mask, and jet-black armor. But there was no human body inside the armor where one should be. Instead, black smoke leaked from every joint and crevice.
"……OOOHHHH!! Himeeee! Himeeeee!!"
Its eyes burned with purple flames, and the armored warrior let out a voice that sounded both wrathful and mournful as it looked around.
"Eek…!"
The armored figure then yanked Okajima free from the slime. With the rusted sword in hand, it struck him down, then sheathed the blade at its waist.
"Gah…"
Oddly, there were no visible wounds on Okajima's body. But his face was contorted in agony.
(Appraisal)
I activated the Appraisal skill to check Okajima’s condition—he wasn't fatally injured.
But the real issue was...
Shadow-Wrought Samurai (Vengeful Spirit)
Status: Berserk / Half-Spirit / Mind Corruption
Details: The soul of a warrior who died a regretful death has possessed a cursed blade, using surrounding matter and black smoke to form a body. He watched his princess be slain before his eyes, and was himself assassinated shortly after. His soul remains trapped in the blade, driven purely by hatred toward those who caused their deaths.
Anyone cut by the sword will be forced to relive the moment of death for eternity, while still alive.
Just as I thought—this armored warrior was clearly connected to that cursed sword legend.
But come on, a blade that makes you experience dying over and over? That’s ridiculously overpowered.
"…We’ve gotta take it down fast."
I deployed the five drones I had been holding back and sent them to snatch the sheath from the armored warrior.
However—
"Do Not Interfereeee!!"
"You’ve got to be kidding…!"
The warrior drew the sword and cut down all five drones in a single slash.
Next, I tried firing long-range slime rounds to pin it down, but it sliced them out of the air just by swinging its sword once.
"Hey Kuon, is it possible to just leave that thing inside the barrier and escape on our own?"
"…I doubt it. We'd have to completely dispel the barrier to escape, and I don’t think that thing will just stay put and let us go."
So yeah—we have to take it down.
(Skill Transfer)
"…! This is—"
"I gave you the Physical Enhancement skill. Use it and get out of here as fast as you can with the others."
"Wait, are you seriously going to fight that thing alone?"
"Yeah. It'll be more efficient this way. Besides—"
While we talked, the armored warrior lunged again, so I created a wall using Ice Magic to block the strike.
"…All right. But don’t do anything reckless, okay?"
"Got it. I’ll try to keep it reasonable."
Kuon activated Physical Enhancement, then dragged the two others still stuck in slime—and the unconscious Okajima—into the depths of the forest.
…She looked like she wanted to say something. Maybe I should’ve listened.
"YOU WON’T ESCAPEEEE!!"
"Tch—"
Now’s not the time for regrets. I’ve got to focus on the problem right in front of me.
I aimed ten more drones at the armored warrior, then reconfigured them mid-flight—combining them with Ice Magic to form a massive greatsword made of ice.
The cursed sword and the icy greatsword collided, each imbued with tremendous power. The shockwave from the impact flattened the surrounding trees.
"UOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!"
The armored warrior poured more power into its blade, and cracks began to spread across my ice greatsword.
But that’s fine. That was the plan.
"GUOOOOHHH!?"
As the ice greatsword shattered, a flood of reinforced restraint slime, stored within it, spilled out—engulfing the armored warrior.
The warrior tried to turn into smoke to escape, but—too late.
"Got you."
"You Cursed Wretch…!"
Among the materials forming the armored warrior, only one had true physical form—the cursed sword itself. That sword was the core and the true body.
I had the slime coat the sword entirely and glue it to the ground. Then I stepped closer, preparing to activate Dispel.
But then—
"Ah… Hime. I… broke my promise… again…"
The black smoke vanished completely, and from the rusted blade, I heard the sound of someone sobbing.
That voice made me instinctively withdraw my hand.
The female skeleton in a kimono that Rentarou and the others saw… The sorrowful cries of the warrior bound to the blade… The legend Kuon told me about this cursed sword…
I recalled all of them. Thought it over. Then made a decision.
"…Let’s try it."
I muttered to myself, activated Magic Counter, and reached toward the sword once more.
Then—
"Sensory Link."
Translator's Note:
🔹 妖刀 (Yōtō) – Cursed Sword /
Demon Blade
A classic trope in Japanese folklore and literature, "妖刀" refers to a sword imbued with malevolent or supernatural properties. These blades often possess consciousness or a tragic backstory, usually causing misfortune or madness to the wielder. The soul of the slain warrior residing in this sword fits that archetype.
🔹 Shadow-Wrought Samurai (Vengeful Spirit): 黒煙の亡霊武者 (Kokuen no Bōrei Musha) – Wraith-like Armored Warrior of Black Smoke
亡霊 (restless spirit/wraith)
武者 (warrior)
The phrase evokes a visual of a
ghostly samurai formed from smoke and regret, a powerful symbol in Japanese
horror that blends the spiritual with the martial.
“Hime” is a respectful and affectionate term for a noblewoman or princess. The ghost's anguished cries suggest he died trying to protect a beloved princess, which implies a tragic loyalty. Keeping “Hime” untranslated can preserve emotional weight and cultural nuance.
🔹 「生きながら永遠に死を追体験する」 –
"To eternally relive the moment of death while still alive.”
A particularly chilling curse. This reflects a form of psychological torment often found in Buddhist-inspired Japanese horror — a soul’s suffering trapped in a karmic loop. It also reinforces the cursed blade’s terrifying power: not physical destruction, but spiritual torment.
🔹 『感覚共有』(Kankaku Kyōyū) – Sensory Sharing
