Episode 47: The Test of Courage Has Begun – Part 3
―――Side ???
"Hey! You’re sure everything’s okay, right?! You really are going to protect me?!"
"Yes, you needn’t worry. Anyone who tries to harm you will be swiftly eliminated. Please, Okajima-sama, focus on your task."
The sun was setting, casting long shadows over the dim forest. A nervous young man named Okajima—who looked to be in his mid-twenties—pressed in on a man wearing an aloha shirt.
Clutched in Okajima’s arms was an old, heavily rusted sword—so corroded it seemed like it had been buried underground for decades.
"If I break the seal on this thing, I’ll really become a billionaire, right?"
"But of course. Among collectors of paranormal relics, that sword is immensely valuable."
"...Is all this talk about cursed objects really legit? My grandpa supposedly made money with it, but honestly... it just sounds like a fairy tale..."
"Oh dear, you still don’t believe me? In that case..."
The man in the aloha shirt smiled gently—and summoned a blue flame in the palm of his hand.
"I-I believe you! I believe you, okay?! Just put that away already!"
"Ah, wonderful. I’m glad we’ve earned your trust. Now, please resume your work."
"R-right... Got it..."
Still visibly shaken, Okajima muttered as he began peeling off the countless ofuda—paper talismans—affixed to the sword.
The man in the aloha shirt spared him a cold glance, then walked over to another man nearby—a bearded figure wearing a training suit: his “business partner.”
"Thanks for your efforts. Now, what’s the situation with the trap?"
"...Two ability users have wandered into the [Maze Road]. No clue if they’re elite agents sent by the mainstream faction, or just poor souls who stumbled into the wrong place."
"Either way, our course of action doesn’t change."
A sinister grin crept across the aloha-shirted man’s face.
"...Do we really need that guy, though? He’s clearly a loser with no power or talent."
"The exorcist who sealed away that demon blade centuries ago was extremely cautious. To prevent mishaps, he designed it so that only those with a direct connection could even touch the talismans."
"...So until the seal is broken, I’ve got to play second fiddle to him, huh."
The bearded man spat the words out with deep disgust.
"I know exactly how you feel, young master. But please, temper your anger. If we succeed here, the revival of the Hisai Clan will be within reach."
"Tch... Fine. Damn it, Kai..."
The man in the training suit—Hisai—reluctantly turned his attention back to the inherited art of his bloodline: the secret technique known as 【Maze Road】.
(Being a broker’s never easy...)
Kai—the man in the aloha shirt—watched quietly, then took a seat on a large rock hidden beneath the trees. He struck a match, lit a paper cigarette, and took a long drag.
On one side was a fallen noble: a gambler who’d burned through his family fortune at online casinos and now came begging, clinging to old legends and long-dead family ties.
On the other was a disgraced exorcist clan heir—once part of a noble house so prominent even the supernatural world knew its name. But after a corruption scandal, they were cast out.
The former was a reckless spendthrift. The latter, a prideful man still clinging to a status long lost. Naturally, they bickered constantly—venting their frustrations to Kai, who had to play mediator.
(But that all ends today.)
Kai stubbed out his cigarette underfoot and reached for another from his breast pocket.
What Okajima had uncovered was something special—information about a cursed sword known to no exorcist in modern Japan.
Kai, who belonged to an underground organization that traded in anomalous artifacts and yokai, recognized the value immediately. Their business was supplying supernatural collectors across the globe—but demand was down. Real relics were now heavily regulated or locked away, and counterfeits flooded the black market.
Kai had personally peddled a few fakes to low-end buyers—those too dumb or too rich to know better. But the profits were pitiful, and the organization was hungry for something real—something elite.
Then he heard of it: a cursed sword unclaimed by any institution. The tales passed down through the Okajima family, and the regional legends... all pointed toward authenticity.
But if it was the real thing, precautions were necessary. Kai had only basic exorcism training—nowhere near enough to handle the sword alone.
That’s where Hisai came in. Recently disgraced, still eager to rejoin supernatural society, and still in contact with Kai’s organization. His family’s secret technique, 【Maze Road】, would buy them time.
(Once the seal is broken, have Hisai suppress the sword. Eliminate Okajima on the spot. Then, when the time is right, call in reinforcements and remove Hisai too. The sword is ours.)
Kai reviewed the plan in his head once more.
The time inside 【Maze Road】 flowed at 1/100th the rate of the outside world. Even if the seal proved difficult, they had more than enough leeway.
Confident that everything was proceeding smoothly, Kai reached for his lighter to ignite another cigarette—
(...A bird?)
Looking up, he spotted a shadow—something like a bird—flitting across the sky.
Under ordinary circumstances, this wouldn’t be strange. Birds fly. That’s just nature.
But this forest was different. This was a barrier that expelled those without powers—and trapped the gifted in a never-ending maze.
Even animals should have been affected.
"Hiiieeek?!"
Suddenly, Okajima let out a scream.
Kai turned toward the voice—and saw a massive bear growling, baring its fangs at the terrified man.
"...Hey, young master. This barrier applies to animals too, right?"
"Yeah, it does! Dammit, why is this happening?!"
Just as Hisai raised his voice and pulled a talisman from his coat, Kai realized something—
(Heh... And here I thought this job would be easy.)
They were surrounded. Not just by one bear—but by dozens of shapes emerging from the woods—creatures that looked like animals, yet somehow... weren't.
