(Explanation Chapter)

As the carriage began to move, Mario wasted no time and launched into another one of his lectures.

“Tenma-kun, what do you think is the difference between magic and sorcery?”

Still looking straight ahead, Tenma answered casually.

“...Whether or not it uses chants?”

“Nope.” Mario shook his head. “Magic is something only people born with the gift to wield it can use. Sorcery, on the other hand, is a technique. It’s a power that can be learned by those with high magical power through study and training—that’s sorcery.”

And so, Mario began his detailed explanation.

Sorcery and Sorcerers

The world recognizes seven attributes:
Fire, Wind, Earth, Water, Light, Darkness, and Null.

A trained sorcerer can use all of them, though each person has their own affinities and weaknesses.

The Null attribute includes techniques like Enchanting, Alchemy, and Appraisal. The remaining six are considered the Basic Attributes.

Furthermore, by mastering combinations of certain attributes, new composite attributes become available:

Light + Darkness Life Attribute
Wind + Water + Darkness Poison Attribute
Wind + Water + Light Lightning Attribute
Earth + Water + Light + Darkness Plant Attribute

A person who can handle all six basic attributes plus the three Null-attribute arts is called a:

Sage(賢者)』

Counting those three Null-attribute arts as a single attribute, someone who can wield seven or more attributes is known as a:

Sorcerer(魔術師)』

Those with five or more attributes are:

Warlocks(妖術師)』

Three or more:

Magicians(魔道師)』

At least one:

Scholars(学者)』

Healing sorcery belongs to both the Light and Darkness attributes, and those proficient in it are often referred to as:

Healers(治癒師)』

Sorcerers study at either a Sorcerer's Guild or a church. To activate sorcery, they must chant the appropriate incantation and call out the spell name.

Attempting to cast spells beyond one’s limits won’t work—it only results in mana depletion and unconsciousness. When mana is critically low, the user will feel nauseous, and forcing further use could be fatal.

Those ranked Magician or above may possess special skills like Chant Shortening or Chant Omission.

Compared to magic, sorcery is less powerful and has weaker effects. However, it comes with the benefit of being able to distinguish between friend and foe during combat.

Magic and Mages

True mages are exceedingly rare. Even within the Sorcerer's Guild, magic remains poorly understood.

Currently confirmed mage types include the six elemental attributes—Fire, Wind, Earth, Water, Light, and Darkness—as well as Enchanters.

Unlike sorcery, magic does not require chanting. According to Guild research, it is classified into three types:

  1. Spell Name Activation
  2. Words of Power
  3. Verse Weaving

Examples: Words of Power
Explode
Blow away
Heal
Perish

Examples: Verse-Based Magic

“Blow, O gust of wind!”
“Light, illuminate all. Light that banishes darkness. Light of purification—come forth!”
“Wind, spiral and rage! Become a tornado! Sweep all away—Tornado!”

Magic is inherently unstable, heavily influenced by the caster’s imagination. If one’s imagination is insufficient, the caster themselves may be harmed.

According to the Guild’s records, there have been cases where mages:

  • Were burned by their own fire magic
  • Got caught up in their summoned tornadoes
  • Drowned in the waves they created

Magic is a phenomenon that ignores logic and natural laws—it can even achieve miraculous effects.

In the past, there have been instances where mages:

  • Resurrected the dead
  • Purified vast corrupted lands
  • Summoned gods into the world

...However, each of those miracles came at the cost of the caster’s life.

“Tenma-kun, I believe your Life Magic falls under either the Null or Light attributes of sorcery. As for your activation style, it would be classified as ‘Spell Name’ casting.”

Mario gave a satisfied nod before continuing.

“Once we get to Gomena, could you show me your Water Magic too? Also, I highly recommend joining the Sorcerer's Guild. If you can use magic, it means your mana pool is strong. That also means you can learn sorcery. A lot of mages from the past joined the Guild, you know.”

After finishing his long-winded lecture, Mario leaned over and made the invitation with an enthusiastic smile.

Tenma gave a wry grin.

“As long as I don’t end up as some lab rat, sure.”

Then, narrowing his eyes toward the horizon, he pointed forward.

“Ah—there it is. That must be Gomena?”

“Yep, that’s the one! Everyone, we’re almost there!”
Mario cheerfully called out as he took the reins back from Tenma.

Ahead of them stood towering city walls and a massive, fortified gate—looming larger and larger as the carriage approached.
