When Tenma asked his question, the three others froze, stunned. A heavy silence fell over the group. To Tenma, it felt suffocating.
Did I say something I wasn’t supposed to? he wondered
uneasily.
Finally, Alf broke the silence.
“Ah… So you're not from around here, huh, Tenma? That
explains it.” He let out a sigh. “Beyond the thicket where you came out,
there’s a place called the Sea of Demonic Trees. And just before that is what
we call the Plain of No Return.”
“The Plain of No Return got that name because about forty or
fifty years ago, a military subjugation force went in—and never came back. Not
a single one.”
“Beyond that plain lies the Sea of Demonic Trees. It’s said
to unleash a monster rampage once every two hundred years. The subjugation
force is believed to have been wiped out by one of those outbreaks.”
“But get this—according to an old man who’s lived in Gomera
since that time, the town never suffered any damage. None.”
“If the monsters were wiped out, then some soldiers
should’ve returned. If the monsters won, Gomera shouldn’t still be standing.
But no one knows what really happened. That whole area was declared a
‘Forbidden Zone’ by the kingdom, and entry’s restricted.”
“That’s why no one in their right mind would head into that
thicket. People usually go around, from the other side. But you… you walked
right out of it. Tell me that’s not suspicious. Do you get it now?”
Alf’s explanation made sense.
Tenma could see it clearly—if someone emerged from a place
with that kind of history, he’d be suspicious too. Alf hadn’t been overly
cautious; he’d made the right call.
What shocked Tenma more was realizing that the place he’d
been summoned to was that place. It also explained the corpses and the
wounds he’d seen when he first arrived.
“I… I didn’t know. I’m not really sure what to say—sorry, I
guess.”
“Why are you apologizing, Tenma?” Alf said with a laugh.
“Anyway, let’s get moving. I want to reach Gomera before nightfall. Camping
outside the city walls sucks.”
At his words, Leaf and Mario moved to the back of the wagon.
Alf placed his greatsword beside the driver’s seat and took his place. Tenma
followed, climbing up onto the seat and holding his own sword.
“All aboard? Then let’s go.”
After checking that everyone was ready, Alf flicked the
reins.
The wagon slowly rumbled forward, heading toward Gomera.
